-- Ramsey Likely to Start Regular Season Opener --

Fri Jun 23, 2006 --from FFMastermind.com

ESPN's John Clayton reports New York Jets QB Patrick Ramsey is likely to start in the regular season opener over QB Chad Pennington. Pennington continues his slow recovery, but is unlikely to rise above the team's No. 2 quarterback position before the 2006 regular season begins. The Jets would prefer not to start rookie QB Kellen Clemens at the beginning of the season, and the Jets have already seen what QB Brooks Bollinger did in a handful of starts in 2005. So, that leaves Ramsey as the most likely candidate to start opening day.
Written like a guy sitting in an office scratching his ***s. Pennington is going to start..... and Ramsey may not make the roster. This isn't just my opinion, i6t's pretty much across the board with the NY beat reporters. This is an excerpt from a chat with Rich Cimini, the NY Daily News beat reporter:[GimmeShelter] 8:48 pm: Any thoughts on Ramsey, Rich?

[RichCimini] 8:49 pm: Yeah. He really struggled in minicamp and he seemed frustrated. Strong arm, tends to force the ball. Seems like a nice guy. I just can’t see him beating out Chad — presuming Chad is healthy.

The jury is WAAAAAAY out on this one. It's June..... Clayton is bored.

PS: I could go get at least six more sources to contradict Clayon here....
Clayton may be on to something...Per KFFL:

Jets | Ramsey lands contract extension

Tue, 11 Jul 2006 06:16:39 -0700

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports the New York Jets extended the contract of QB Patrick Ramsey. He received a one-year, $2.1 million extension through 2007. In exchange for postponing his free-agent year, Ramsey got a small guarantee from the Jets, receiving $250,000 of his nonguaranteed base salary for this season ($1.7 million) in the form of a roster bonus that was paid June 30.

I would not put much stock in this, as far as ot relates to any chance of Ramsey starting. note this:In exchange for postponing his free-agent year, Ramsey got a small guarantee from the Jets, receiving $250,000 of his nonguaranteed base salary for this season ($1.7 million) in the form of a roster bonus that was paid June 30.

So, they garanteed him money he might not have gotten in incentives? I think the Jets just hedged their bet, with virtually no risk. This year, I think more than any before, I'm dying to go to training camp, which opens in.... 17 days. :excited:

I've been to the first day of Jets camp for 5 straight years. One of my wife's best friends is getting married that same day. :hot:

A different take on this:

Jets | Ramsey deal could signal Pennington is healthy

Published Tue Jul 11 10:15:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the contract extension signed by New York Jets QB Patrick Ramsey could indicate QB Chad Pennington (shoulder) is healthy. Ramsey struggled early at the Jets' minicamp. The one-year extension, which gives him $250,000 now, tells Ramsey he will make the team as long as he doesn't stink it up in training camp. The $2.1 million next year is backup-type money, and there is no guarantee he's going to get it. By March of 2007, the Jets have to decide whether to pay Pennington or Ramsey a huge roster bonus.

Bollinger is still a Jet, just like Orton is a Bear and some other QBs. I think the press has written them off before the team's have. While I'd probably write the same thing if I had to, I'd bet at least 1 surprises us.
