Kentucky Bourbon (1 Viewer)

Got a brouchure sent to my house regarding Kentucky Bourbon trails and events.  Any insight on whether the trail or the events are worth a weekend trip?  If so, which events do you like?

Never been but I've looked into them casually. If I was in driving distance of KY I'd be there next weekend. And probably the weekend after that. And again the weekend after that.

A few friends have toured some of the distilleries and had a great time.

I can't give any specific advice but great idea for a thread. It would be nice to get some first hand recs, trying to google that #### is a giant cluster####. Surely with the lengthy thread of icon's there are some guys here with first hand experience.

Best distilleries?

Through an organized tour or independently?

Best season?

What big events are worth checking out?

Anybody done the Bourbon Chase?

Head over to the Ran a 10k thread, there is a dedicated group of runners that do the Bourbon Chase every year. Even run it with a black-eyed joe shirt on the whole way.

That is a well organized site. Which distilleries did you visit? Any tips?
Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark and Barton 1792 with them. And Evan Williams and Bulleit on our own.

Sit back and enjoy the ride.

I've done many of them.  Maker's Mark is the best to visit - it's beautiful and they'll let you hand-dip your own personal bottle.  You have to really want to go there, though.  It's a long way out a country road (it's easier if you come from Louisville, however).

Four Roses is unique - the owner paid a fortune to have it built with a Spanish style.  Their regular bourbon is crap, but the small batch and single barrel are very good.

Woodford Reserve is very near Lexington and borders up against some of the horse farms, so it's a beautiful location and one of the larger grounds of any of them.  Great place to have lunch on the veranda.

There are a handful of them right around Bardstown, where you can get a decent B&B.  The owner of one actually taxied us around to the distilleries.  There's a huge bourbon festival there in September which is a lot of fun.

Wild Turkey just spent a bunch of money upgrading their visitors center and have a lot of clever souvenirs (The Kickin' Chicken).

Most of the rest just resemble factories, unless they've updated in the last few years since I was there last.
