Kerry Collins (1 Viewer)

Why would Collins want to go to Tenn? At best he is a 1 year starter and the team is going to suck. The phone must not be ringing because this option looks horrible for him. Also, since Tenn is cheap, he will most likely get a really bad contract. Maybe he has settled for a backup role on a bad team. An impressive way to end ones career.
How about this:Collins sits in his home, mulling retirement - decides against it.

The phone is not riningin off the hook.

The proposition:

Beat Volek out in camp on an incentive laden contract, become a FA in 2007 with hopefully a somewhat reviced career.

I have two questions...

1) Since when has Kerry Collins proven he'll be content as a backup? He wouldn't mentor Eli Manning, someone thinks he'll wilfully accept a QB2 role in Tennessee under Volek? IMHO, that is ZERO chance he signs in Tennessee unless he believes he can win the starting job in camp. He may not win the job, but I bet he expects to.

2) Since when has Kerry Collins been confused with someone who upgrades a team's QB position?
My point exactly. This is not a "stable vet happy to help the team" coming on board. It's a "me-first guy who hasn't been good in 2 or 3 years" coming on board. If the goal is for a veteran backup to fill the #2 roll and push Volek, this is not the guy I would have picked.

If I were TN, I would not be in any hurry to get Young on the field.

I would let Collins and Volek fight for job and put Young as QB3 this year...QB2 next year.

Starts in 2008 earliest.

I agree; but, could this mean the end of one of the Titans QBs? Do they need both Volek and Collins? I can't see Collins as a backup, and he is not much of a mentor. If the answer is YES, then they need to trade Mauck for something. If the answer is NO, and Collins picks up the system, I could see Volek being placed on the market.

Titans GM denies QB Collins report

7/28/2006

(on the report that they were looking at Kerry Collins)

It’s news to me. I have never talked to Kerry Collins. We never set up an appointment to get him in or anything else.

(on if Kerry Collins might be looked at in the near future)

I would be shocked. We are trying to look at these guys. We don’t have any plans to bring anybody in.

Hey Woodrow,1). He may not be Pat Haden but I don't think he's stupid. Huge difference in his stage of career from now being unemployed to being the #1 guy in NY. He knows this. If he doesn't than maybe he really is stupid.

And who think's he'll be a mentor? He'd be insurance.

2). Smart aleck answer is since Steve McNair left. Real answer is adding a veteran like Collins to a QB corps like the Titans have with the experience they have isn't considered upgrading the group?

Hi Colin,I think the need they're trying to fill is absolutely the veteran back up to push Volek a little but be the backup you mention. Who would you see them going after there that's available?

Joe, you could be right but I'm not sure someone can change their stripes that quickly. It's not like Collins has been out of the league and/or forced into a backup situation for a few years. He was the starter in Oakland last year, and just two years ago he admitted that he had no interest in mentoring Eli or backing him up. What makes you think things have changed? If he was looking for a payday, I know that both Jon Clayton and Peter King said he had standing offers to play in Baltimore and Miami but they wouldn't guarantee him a chance to start; particulary in Baltimore where he was very much the 2nd option to McNair.

I think he's going to Tennessee not because it's the only option, but because it's the only option where he COULD start.

Far be it for me to second guess Floyd Reese and Jeff Fisher, I think they've earned the benefit of the doubt. But if he does in fact sign, I have to say
