I like hot dogs a lot of different ways: Chicago Style, with kraut and mustard, bacon wrapped with grilled peppers and onions, Korean Style (with kimchee and sriracha mayo), etc..

I don't mind a little ketchup on a dog, but I don't exactly seek it out either.

1st choice : chili, cheese, onions

2nd choice : ketchup, mustard, relish.

Am I the only one a little weirded out by seeing JB post in the FFA? It kind of feels like the principal is watching. :oldunsure:

I don't care about ketchup on a dog one way or another, but it's so weird to me that, 3 pages in, there's only one mention of slaw. Frankly, not as many people eating dogs with chili as I'd expect either. Chili/slaw must be a southeastern thing.

Now that I think about it, our local minor league baseball team was just bought be a group from Colorado. I don't mind most of the changes, but they really ####ed up the hot dog topping options. You used to be able to get real chili, a locally ubiquitous relish (which is really a slaw), onion, and pickle on the dogs. Now, they've completely axed the slaw/relish and onion, and the only chili you can get on the dog is this garbage stuff that is literally just beans and some chili seasoning. Like the stuff you get at the grocery store in a can called "chili beans". It's really atrocious. Other than the terrible "chili", the only topping options now are mustard, ketchup, and pickle relish.  I wanted to offer to sell them some proper chili to put on the dogs, but I don't feel like making extra and there's no way they'd pay what I'd charge.

I used to think it was just a cost saving measure (which it surely is), but now I'm starting think these people really just have no idea how Southerners eat their hot dogs.

Never heard of slaw on a hot dog.

I like dill relish on dogs, but sweet relish is an abomination.

If I have yellow mustard, I need to put ketchup with it.  Don't know why.

Never ketchup by itself

If I have brown mustard, I am ok with just brown mustard but can add ketchup if I so choose.
Same with me. Standard yellow mustard needs to be balanced with something else, usually ketchup for me but sometimes Heinz 57 sauce and sometimes salsa.

It's a hot dog...being a snob about leftover snippets of somewhat meat seems odd.

And ketchup is delicious in a dog.  Second only to Stadium Saice at a Milwaukee Brewers game.

He is modeling good posting behaviors and topic choices

By the way, the reuben dog is surprisingly good. Lay a slice of Swiss cheese on the hot dog to melt it a little as it finishes cooking. Top with sauerkraut and Russian / Thousand Island dressing. That's the only way I would have ketchup anywhere near a hot dog.

IMO: It's about flavor profiles:

Mustard/Onion/Relish/Kraut all have a certain flavor profile that compliments most any sausages. Hot Dog is a bit of a bastardized version of a sausage, but still falls in the classification.

Ketchup's boring "liquified sugar" profile doesn't really jive with a hot-dog for my tastes... but different strokes for different folks. If you wanna ride teh diabeetus express, by all means.
Because hot dogs are otherwise great for you.

Like Redmond said, grilled onions and peppers are a nice complement.
The Italian Hot Dog is a NJ staple. Unknown virtually everywhere else. Two all beef franks in pizza bread (think Italian sub roll flavor / consistency but in the shape of a pita) stuffed with grilled peppers and onions and fried potatoes. Once you have it, you never want to go back.

I lived not too far from NJ most of my life and never had the pleasure. Sounds awesome.

My first experience with the Chicago thing was when I had a hot dog on a layover in O'Hare. I asked for ketchup and mustard, and the person behind me in line at the stand made a comment to me about putting ketchup on it.

I was in the city for about 45 minutes total and got judged for my condiment choice.

If you really want to do it right, swap the hot dog for a kielbasa...deep fry it for some crispiness...bun...slaw...fries...slather in BBQ sauce.  That's the Cleveland way.
I had one of those when I was in Cleveland about 3 years ago. They were really good.

high fructose corn syrup is third or fourth on the list of ingredients for most ketchup.    it's basically tomato syrup.
You know you don't have to buy those ketchups, right?

And that we're discussing putting it on something made up primarily of pig ###### and hooves.

Catsup on fries, if BBQ sauce is unavailable.  Not on anything else for me.  That said I do not concern myself with the condiment choice of others.  The existence of mayonnaise offends me, but what ae you going to do?

People voting "maybe" or "always" are obviously trolls and should get clipped under the new moderation policy.
Late to this thread.

@Joe Bryant - considering the vitriol in the 5guys thread, the pizza thread and other food related issues, I believe it's high time for a Food Sub Forum.

ps - don't like mustard so ketchup and kraut for me. Sabrett onions could also work.

TIA

Ha. I hear you but I'm not sure how much we can handle at once... ;)
