Key West Florida (1 Viewer)

Thinking about taking my wife down to Key West for a weekend as a Christmas Present. Anyone have any information or ideas?

Forget Key West...go to Little Palm Island.

Probably should have asked about budget before suggesting.
You are in the FFA guy.
:lmao: I was actually thinking that as I typed.
J/k - i apreciate the heads up. This looks real nice. But if we are talking about your own island I'm guessing it's going to be on the expensive side.

OK so the best I could come up with is The Reach, A Waldorf Astoria Resort. South side of Duval Street on the beach.

I've stayed at the Reach. Nice place - nice rooms. The location is odd as it's on the opposite end of Duval from the action. It's walkable but not convenient.

Breakfast at My Blue Heaven. Kooky little place - very laid back. Have to give props on the Tenderloin Eggs Benedict (sometimes they have lobster eggs benedict too). Try the :coffee: It is locally roasted and maybe even grown locally. It is very good. I still order it for home.

Get there early as it fills up fast or you will have to wait a while.

ETA: Louie's Backyard is a good spot for dinner.

Depending on where you stay, if you're looking for a cool pool to hang out in, go to Dante's Key West. Tiki Bar at some resort, I forget the name of it, but they let us hang out there all day and use the pool/facilities, they just expect you to buy some food/drinks. We didn't disappoint them on that front.

Dante's Key West
Thanks for the help with tthis everyone. I'm going to file this one away. I ended up geting a tw night cruise to the Bahamas. Its a neat and tidy trip over a weekend and we dont have to worry about food or hotel and it leaves right down the street from us. I'm looking forward to the KW trip, but I want to do it from more then just a night or two.

Trip to Key West happening in May. Apparently we'll be staying at the Pier House. Anyone have any experience there?

It's been a few years since I've visited. What's new? Anything noteworthy that has changed or popped up?

If memory serves, their bar, the Chart Room, is very small, but has a very cool vibe and free popcorn all the time in one of those movie theater popping machines. It's awesome at about 2 AM when you realize you've had 18 beers and 10 shots and nothing to eat in 12 hours. That's the only time popcorn tastes as good as it smells.

We had our wedding reception on their pier. It was pretty cool. It's a nice place, though I think it's overpriced personally. The food is decent but it's very easy to find better. We spent most of our time at the tiki type bar on the pier when we weren't out and about.

EG put the link up. The Key West thread is loaded with good stuff. You can eat once a day during happy hour and not need much else the rest of the day. Tons of happy hours with a lot of specials, most of them within walking distance of each other.

Bed and Breakfast with a private jacuzzi. I'll try and find the vacation rental place we went thru but they have a lot of nice units, most with full kitchens and private patios.

Rent the bikes, have them dropped off, do the bikes 1-2 days, they allow you to rent a unit that might be a few blocks away from the main drag and get a quieter place to chill out, also save money that way.

There really are some amazing happy hour deals in KW, especially for those that like seafood. The last time I was in KW I stayed at the Reach Resort way on the other end of Duval. It will be nice staying a bit closer to the action this time around. This will definitely be a "lay by the pool during the day and head out for happy hour" kind of trip with a bunch of buddies. Can't wait.

Never been down there. Now I am thinking about planning a trip for October. Any suggestions on low key places to stay for a couple in their 40s?

the south end of Duval is more "low key".. lots of inns and guesthouses, and you are only a 15-20 minute walk to downtown/ Mallory Sq area

I think that pretty much describes the whole area.
Gotcha. I had this vision of a bunch of drunk 20 somethings pissing in the pools
Only during Fantasy Fest really. 3:15 AM at Sloppy Joe's, you're liable to see some drunken ###holes like me and my friends whooping it up, but in general it's not Bourbon Street or Collins Ave, it's more like a tailgate at a Jimmy Buffett show.

Chart a Room is very cool place to hang out in.

Further from Duval you go, the quieter and more easy going it gets. Loved staying at Mermaid and Alligator B&B last time I was here. Stayed at Westin last night. Meh. Not my thing, but had to stay close to Mallory Square.

ETA: Off to Islamorada which is completely my speed.

Heading to Key West again in mid-May. Staying at the Pier House right on the Western end of Duval. Tremendous location but for Chet $. I too will be one of the drunken a-holes at Sloppy Joe's at 3:15 AM. But I'm a mid-40s drunk - way different than a pissing in the pool 20s drunk. And that's what I love about Key West - I fit right in! :banned:

We rented a place in the Truman Annex. It was pretty much perfect. Easy access to everything by foot. A quick search of VRBO looks like we were in this condo complex, though the unit we were in was a little nicer/more modern than that specific one. Great, great location imo.

Truman Annex is nice (as mentioned above) but if you like the eclectic side of Key West it wouldn't be my 1st choice. My business partner goes a ton. He rents a house now, but he always swore by The Gardens. I've never stayed there, but he prefers it to Truman Annex.

I moved to West Palm Beach 4 years ago. Every time I got to plans weekend away we end up in Orlando because of my daughter combined with a 2.5 hour drive vs a 4.5 hour drive to key west.

I wish they had a boat that would be a ferry.

They have a ferry that goes between the Tampa area and Key West. Not sure exactly where on the west coast of FL it docks, but it exists.
