Keypad locks on your house? Or are you still in the stone age? (1 Viewer)

We had installed one of these at our old house, on both the front and back doors, and I got used to never having to bring keys with me unless I had to drive somewhere (and even then it was one of those modern car keys). (Actually, our old house had one with wireless Z-wave capability, and I networked it into a wireless setup, so we could also lock and unlock from smartphones or computers, but the reception was never very good).

We got into our new house recently, and having to carry around keys is SO annoying. Just replaced the back door with the one linked above. Such an awesome convenience.

Are any of you home owners out there still really carrying around house keys? Highly recommend you getting on board with this here. Such an awesome convenience for 70 bucks.

This is my next home automation project. I've been wanting to ditch the keys for years, but the technology isn't there yet, IMO. We are on the cusp though - I'm considering the August smart lock once it comes out in the next couple months.

Technology isn't there yet? I just linked to it on Amazon. I installed it at two houses. What are you waiting for, Kirk?

Wish I could get away with it but I live in a nice neighborhood where something like this would be considered "tacky."

Yeah, that's not really what I'm looking for. Very low tech and looks kinda ghetto, IMO.

Contrast that thing you bought with the August Smart Lock.

My new house has four different keys for four outside doors, plus another one to get into the house from the garage. That's pretty fun.

Not a bad idea... unless you got kids.. we have a lock box outside with a extra key.. the first time we set the code we made it easy for her to remember.. then one day we overhear her telling a friend the code.. When we reacted she said "what's the big deal all my friends know it" :wall:

My neighborhood is very exclusive, no need for keys. Billionaires don't break into each others homes.

You commoners need to move up out of the hood.

Why would this matter how many times would you need to unlock all 4 doors. I would imagine you have one main door you use.

That'll be great when you have to buy a new lock every time you upgrade a smartphone

I'm lazy but not THAT lazy.

Change the code and tell your kid not to be so stupid. Boom.

Looks safe and secure, just like ATM machines and credit card readers at Home Depot.
Yeah it's wayyyy less secure than a regular lock. Common burglars around here are really good at code cracking. They'll sit at the side door all night trying every possible combination of the thousands of choices.

That or if they want to come into my house that badly, they'll break a window or smash the door down.

You can barely see it. You certainly can't see it from the curb.
My wife said the same thing when I showed her one a couple months ago. "I don't want that thing on our door "
My wife was so used to it that when we moved in she was instantly like "you need to put on the new locks." And I live in a nice neighborhood.

My first thought as well. Used to live in an apartment building where you had to be buzzed in, but there was a "secret" keycode for residents that automatically buzzed the gate. One guy has a party and tells all the guests the code.

Would be the same with kids, they'll tell all their friends the code eventually.
You can change it.

Any of you guys have that newfangled 'lectricity in your homes yet? Stuff is probably dangerous. And those tacky power lines!

This reminds me of a vacation rental house lock. My HOA wouldn't allow something this tacky in my neighborhood. I'm sure it looks good on YOUR door though.

was actually thinking about getting it for my beach house so anyone can show up and get in. But read tons of reviews on how fast the battery dies

I could see the Z-wave home automation stuff have some value, but those cost a little bit more. I could see giving people temporary access for stuff like keeping an eye on my pets while on vacation, house-guests, things like that. Those features are at a higher price point, I think.

:goodposting: Keyless is the only way to go. Love being able to walk out the door and head to a local restaurant or bar without keys in my pocket. Simply liberating.
