Keypad locks on your house? Or are you still in the stone age? (1 Viewer)

Yeah, we use 8 digits. You can set it for anywhere from 4 to 8.

Plus there are two codes which is nice when you have a house sitter so you can set her a personal code that you deactivate when you return.

The house we are in now has these. Very convenient except when the porch light is off and I can't see the numbers on the key pad.

mentioned this before but i haven't locked my house in the 8 years i lived here. i'm not sure even we even have a key. we have 2 dogs. bring it. only key i carry is the car key.

My new house has four different keys for four outside doors, plus another one to get into the house from the garage. That's pretty fun.
Why would this matter how many times would you need to unlock all 4 doors. I would imagine you have one main door you use.
True, which is why I only carry two of them. But sometimes it's easier to come in through the garage, the front door or off the deck into the kitchen area, depending on what we're doing. It's pretty silly to have different keys for all of them (plus the cellar/laundry room). It was like that when we bought it over the summer.

I live in a gated community, haven't locked my doors in years. I've went on vacations and left the doors unlocked. Oats you live in a neighborhood where you have to lock your doors? Seriously? I thought you were a big shot lawyer.

This reminds me of a vacation rental house lock. My HOA wouldn't allow something this tacky in my neighborhood. I'm sure it looks good on YOUR door though.
was actually thinking about getting it for my beach house so anyone can show up and get in. But read tons of reviews on how fast the battery dies
My old one lasted 6 months to a year, and it had wifi. This one will go significantly longer without the wifi. I don't mind changing 4 AA batteries once a year.

This is my next home automation project. I've been wanting to ditch the keys for years, but the technology isn't there yet, IMO. We are on the cusp though - I'm considering the August smart lock once it comes out in the next couple months.
Not getting the point of moving from a key to a phone. Talk about a PIA.

I'll take the ghetto punch code. Makes it nice when going for a walk/run/bike ride.

I also use separate codes for my butler, my nanny, my housekeeper, my other butler, and my other butler.

Do you guys that have done this set up the system yourself, or is it run thru your Alarm system? I was introduced to this by a door to door guy from Vivint. Was intrigued, but heard the company was a pile of ####. Looked into doing it thru ADT (my current alarm co) and didn't want to spend a bit more $$$ per month, plus some up front $$$.

What interested my was being able to allow my kids in and out easily, letting neighbors and help (pet sitters, cleaners, etc.) in without giving them keys. And also being able to control lights and other electronics as well as viewing my house while on trips.

Planning a month plus trip next summer and would like to be able to control my house some white gone.

Mine isn't connected to anything. Just a stand alone lock.

What you're talking about is a lot more complicated. I'm just talking about going to Home Depot and replacing your deadbolt with one of these things. That's 70 bucks an an hour of your time. Easy.

If you want whole home automation beyond that, it's expensive, and if you want to save a little money and do it yourself, requires a bunch of time and effort. There is a thread here somewhere. I did my last house myself using Homeseer. It wasn't perfect, but I had locks, lights, heat, motion sensing, all hooked up to a central computer system and could access from the internet or smartphone. It took a ton of work over a period of time and required some really basic programming and electrical work. Debating whether it's worth the expense and effort in our new house, so far leaning against it. But already I will say I miss the lighting stuff alone -- before I had lighting set to go off at a certain time, lock doors, and set certain lights on in the morning etc. I had one button by the stairs that I could press when going up to bed, turned off all lights and locked the doors, turned down the heat, etc. Super convenient and a little spoiled from it now, but again, a whole bunch of man hours to make it work. There are easier solutions out there and I may ultimately give it a go and start adding pieces here, but for now I'm just happy to have the keyless doors as a start.

We had installed one of these at our old house, on both the front and back doors, and I got used to never having to bring keys with me unless I had to drive somewhere (and even then it was one of those modern car keys). (Actually, our old house had one with wireless Z-wave capability, and I networked it into a wireless setup, so we could also lock and unlock from smartphones or computers, but the reception was never very good).

We got into our new house recently, and having to carry around keys is SO annoying. Just replaced the back door with the one linked above. Such an awesome convenience.

Are any of you home owners out there still really carrying around house keys? Highly recommend you getting on board with this here. Such an awesome convenience for 70 bucks.
Wait, you mean you still punch in codes? :lmao: :lmao:

$70 + $5000 install fee. AMIRITE!!!!

Locks are essentially worthless these days. Thieves all use "kick-ins" instead of screwing with locks and bump keys.,

Entry to pretty much any door in 2-3 seconds. Two Deadbolts? Maybe one extra kick, but probably not.

Much better investment in home security is a re enforced door frame plate. Installs in the same hour, invisible, and actually stops thieves. :)

Highly recommend the Ultimate Lock.

Simple Flir device for a smart phone will allow you to get the codes off your door for up to 30 minutes after you've left or entered.

Looks like a simple cover or battery cover for your smart phone...no real way to tell it's Flir...and it'll even give you the order of the numbers.

Same for ATM's and gas station pumps when punching in your pin code.

I love push button access...but I also realize it's much easier to thwart than a simple keyed entry.

I wouldn't even have to look suspicious by having to pick or bump the lock...just walk up a few minutes after you've left or entered...maybe have a clipboard in hand and while knocking, I snap a picture of your keypad. I ask if you're willing to sign up for a free consultation for whatever...you tell me to get off your lawn...I come back when you've left for the weekend and have fun with your PPV while having my way with your wife's underthings.

Uh oh, key draggers. I saw a report where thief's are snapping photos of keys and sending them to a company that can make a copy based on just the photo. You're all screwed. Keep those keys in your pocket at all times. No more valet, oil changes, leaving keys in a bin at the gym, etc.

We got the ghetto punch code schlage for this reason too.

Oh, and IN before Otis forgets to change the battery and gets locked out.
