kicker - finding a gem for week 10 (1 Viewer)

Sometimes I think the rankings reflect kickers on high scoring teams instead of teams that will stall out and have to kick a field goal. Like Washington's kicker from last week. hmm...he plays at home vs. Philly this week.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, kickers are a crapshoot... but let's roll the dice:

So, what teams have good offenses, won't get blown away (ala Stover vs. Pittsburgh), and won't be playing in the wind/rain?

I'm thinking J. Wilkens in the dome vs. N.O., although there's a potential blowout there.

I don't like Kaeding, because I think Indy will be scoring TD's on SD's suspect pass D.

S. Janokowski vs. Chicago is intriguing but weather may be a factor.

S. Graham vs. Baltimore could be good (if he's on waiver wire for ya).

Ryan Longwell vs. Packers at Green Bay(weather?)

Kasay vs. Atlanta. Although i don't know if Carolina can move the ball at all.

Or if you want some Monday night action, Nedney at Seattle. SF's pass D is pretty good. But moving the ball into FG range may be a problem.

Thoughts?

I tend to pay a bit of attention to kickers. I've lost too many games by just a couple of points, only to learn that an obviously better K match-up was available on the wire. Then I lose a playoff spot by one game and...well, you know. With Jackson back, I think Wilkins is a great play this week and beyond. IIRC, he hasn't been all that terrible without Jackson. Plus he has two home dome games against tough defenses during the fanatsy playoffs.

I always liked Josh Brown. Seattle knows he can kick the 50+ yarder so they always let him try the long ones vs trying a short punt. Also, with the running game not too great right now, they may not be able to keep the ball moving and drives will stall. They play at home on Monday night too.

I just dropped Stover to pick up Mare, the Ravens are a mess right now, and the saints are starting to put up points. Plus there in a dome most of the time, so whats not to love...

Is Mare fully over his groin pull?

I'm picking up Crosby this week, but starting to re-think. Might have to see if Wilkins is available, that sounds like a good call.

Rian Lindell (at Miami)
Lindell has been hot the last few weeks, with Lee Evans picking it up. Easy schedule coming up. Watch out for snowy home games, but this week at MIA might be good.Shayne Graham has been very consistent and CIN tends to score on BAL.Bing Bill Crosby might be good with GB scoring so many points. MMMBop Hanson same deal. Nice to go with teams that will put up points.Any kicker against CIN, MIA, etc...(Stover and Lindell this week).Maybe some team has dropped Gradkowskieskilewski of NE during their bye.Kickers are a crap shoot, but no reason not to try to scoop a few extra points based on matchups. It's not like a kicker's studness pushes him through bad matchups.

Mare as by far the best Kicker sch... however.

Saints | Mare continues to struggle with field goals - Sun Nov 4 9:39:00 p.m. ET 2007

(KFFL) The Associated press reports New Orleans Saints PK Olindo Mare made only two of his four field goal attempts in the team's Week 9 game. He has only made six of his 12 field goal attempts this season.

:goodposting: I have Dawson and while he has a great schedule upcoming and has been solid so far, playing Pitt scares me a bit. Cleveland has a good offense, but if Pitt slows them down early, Pitt will score a lot and so Cleveland may be going just for TDs late. I have Braylon and I am sitting Anderson for Romo/Chatman at QB/Flex because I just don't like having too many players going against a top, top defense. I am thinking about picking up Brown for this weekend or maybe Hanson.Actually, after looking at things, I just dropped Dawson for Brown. SF has given up tons of points this year. The one guy to avoid is Reed for Pitt. I picked him up after his early success and he kicked nothing but XPs for me until I dropped him 2 weeks after picking him up. He has 2 FGs in the last 5 games after having 9 in the first 3. His one against Baltimore was a 22 yarder, so very close to Pitt scoring a TD and he would have had 6 XPs and 0 FGs.

Nobody has mentioned J.Reed. He is available in my league and I am thinking about picking him up with Gostkowski's bye week. I think its either him or Hanson.

Go with Hanson. Pitt will score, but it will be TDs. Their offense will not be stopped by Cleveland so Reed will continue to rack up XPs. I lived through my worst 2 weeks of the season with Reed where he got me 5 XPs after being the #1 kicker through week 3. He has done squat lately except XPs.

Crosby or Hanson? Kaeding just hasn't been doing it for some reason. Who's the best value going forward of these three you think?

Mare's percentage ratio for one - OUCH!

To be fair, 3 of those were 50+. Still he hasn't been very good, especially earlier on.I'd be more afraid of too many extra points vs St Lou.

I think they have about the same schedule going forward, so tough call. They seem pretty even, so maybe Hanson because he is in a dome for 4 games? I know very little about Crosby since he is on a roster so I was looking at Hanson and Brown to replace/supplement Dawson and I like Brown's gravy schedule. With kicker's sometimes it is just luck, but Hanson is the guy I would go with IMHO.

Rian Lindell (at Miami)
:ninja: Lindell has been pretty good the past 2 years and Buffalo's redzone offense hasn't been that great this season. But they're starting to move the ball a lot more and should be able to continue to do so against the Dolphins. The weather looks great for this week's game in Miami so Lindell should be a good play this week.

Thanks for your reply. I'm going to try to hold off and not pick up any players today and move up on the WW. One of these guys should be there Saturday when the waivers open up to first come first serve.

I picked up Hanson for Gostkowski's bye. He should get some opportunities out in AZ.
I know it's just a kicker, but Gostkowski has been so steady that I may just not start a kicker rather than anyone else picking him up. I figure he will make up the points the rest of the season along the line. Is that stupid?

Thanks guys, I picked up Hanson for NE bye week. Good call on the dome the next 4 weeks. I am not dropping Gostkowski and I wouldn't recommend it considering NE schedule coming up.

Not sure I would do that unless you have ridiculously short benches and can live with 0 from your kicker. I have a real deep team, but a spot or two that I would sacrifice for a week. Then again, Dawson wasn't irreplaceable, so if he is gone for me, then I live with Brown or any of another 22 kickers based on weekly matchups.Again, I think you really have to look at your bench. You are basically into week 10 and if your playoffs start in week 14/15, then Gostkowski has to outscore Hanson (if someone gets him before you do) in 4 or 5 weeks. If Hanson has a good week like he has been having, that could be 2 to 3 points per game. According to FBGs, Gostkowski is outscoring Hanson by 0.28 ppg right now, so in my mind, yes it is stupid. To put it in perspective, Gostkowski is #4 ppg, and 2ppg below him is kicker #17 and 3 ppg below him is kicker #29.Personally, I would find the Kenny Watson on your bench that you think you need and toss him to the wolves. At this point, the chance of a bench player contributing is probably remote, so I personally would not lose the #4 kicker (if NE offense stalls just a bit more, Gostkowski is gold) over a RB4/5 that has little chance to play, but seems more important than an actual starter on your team.ETA: I had Neil Rackers in his ridiculous year, so I realized then that finding the stud kicker (they are usually on waivers at the beginning of the season) can be the difference between a good and great team.

NP, I did the exact same thing this week. I am in first and I didn't even put in a waiver last night and I slid to the top of the waiver wire just like I wanted and no kicker was taken. Holmes, Henry (Cincy), Morris, etc. were all taken like I knew they would be ahead of me, so no need to waster my waiver spot. Now, in case of injury, I know I have first dibs at someone who might contribute.By the way, I didn't realize how atrocious Kaeding has been this year. Unfortunately, I can see how weeks 3-5 probably kept him rostered until now so he has definitely been a boat anchor. I think in some places he was the #1 ranked kicker. Again, this is why I hunt early on for WW kickers.

I put a bid in on Crosby but am not likely to get him as 2 owners ahead of me also need bye week kickers. I am in waiver position 10 out of 10.

That leaves me with Kasay. I tried to get Rackers last week but got beaten to the punch.

Oh well, as long as I have a starting kicker I don't care who it is. I get Gostkowski back next week.
