Kolb/Skelton (1 Viewer)

Hey guys,

Not entirely sure what to make of Kevin Kolb. I was initially hoping Skelton got the starting job, and decided to do an analysis to determine if there was anything I was missing.

I noticed something interesting.

Kolb played in 9 games (8 games if you discount game 14 where he got hurt after throwing only one pass.

To project for a full year, you should be able to double his stats to get a 16 game result.

so looking at his stats.....

253 attempts, 146 completions. 57.7% completion percent. 1955 yards 9 TD 8 INT over 8 games

This projects to 506 attempts, 292 completions 57.7% completion %, 3910 yards, 18 TD and 16 INT over 16 games.

Now this is basically his first year as a pro starter (I dont count 2009 and 2010 where he started 2 and 5 games respectively)If we compare these projected full year stats with what Cam Newton did as a rookie starter:

310 completions on 517 passes for 4051 yards, 21 TD and 17 INT.

The stats are actually quite similar to what Kolb would have projected to full year.

I acknowledge you dont like to see that many INT's or a QB who gets hurt as much as Kolb has.... but if you consider he has less than 16 career starts, is it not fair to assume that the INT's will go away once he has another year or two of experience? right now his projected yardage over 16 games would have ranked him #11 for yardage ahead of last year's fantasy QB darling Ryan Fitzpatrick who threew for 3832 yards, 24 TD and 24 INT

but It's funny how everyone is singing the praises of Cam Newton and talking about how bad Kolb is. If you further analyze the situation, Kolb also would have had an easier schedule in the remaining games of the season(if he had played the full season so I wonder if he may have hit the 4000 yard mark because the games he missed were not against the same kind of defenses he faced while he was in the lineup.

I'm not suggesting that the everyone is wrong, but I think this warrants another look to see if there is something we have missed here.

anyhow, I thought I'd see if anyone else knows more about the situation.

As for Skelton, I was also suitably impressed with him at times. Those last 4 games of the year he looked pretty good (although he threw too many INT's too).

Opinions please.

I've said all offseason that the Cardinals very much better hope Kolb goes out and makes this a no-brainer decision. If it's really a neck and neck battle in camp, that's much more going to be a condemnation of Kolb than an endorsement of Skelton.

FYI: Skeltons stats projected over a full year work out to 302 completions, 550 attempts 54.9% completion rate for 3826 total yards, 22TD and 28 INT .

Worth noting is that Kolb also played against slightly stiffer competition than Skelton did. Despite that, Kolb had the higher Passer Rating.

One thing in favor of Skelton is that he did lead/helped Arizona to 4 wins in overtime. That shows he doesn't wilt much when the pressure is on, an important trait for a QB.

Minor note but Skelton did bring Arizona back from a 19-7 deficit to beat San Francisco including throwing 2 TD.

Projecting Kolb: 292/506 for 3910 and 18 TD vs 16 INT

Projecting Skelt: 302/550 for 3826 and 22 TD vs 28 INT

I think Kolb ends up winning the starting job but I'd rather wait towards the end of a draft (if in a 16-20 team league) and take a gamble on Skelton myself.

Also worth noting is that Skelton was an unheralded 23 year old 2nd year player out of a small school who improved a ton between his rookie year and his second season (4.42 net yards/attempt to 5.42 net yards/attempt).

I'm not sure Skelton will clean up his accuracy issues enough to really develop into a long-term starter, but if you were looking for a player with a ton of developmental possibilities you could do worse than a young small-school guy with Skelton's physical tools.

I think the two will be pretty evenly matched this year, but that since Skelton has a lot more upside he should get the nod. Unless Kolb wins the job cleanly you might as well invest in Skelton and hope he continues to get better.

I suspect you'd be able to grab both QB's towards the end of the draft. one of them will start for sure, and if they both project to any total close to 4000 yards, for fantasy purposes, that's a high end QB2 or a low end QB1. Right now the problem is the uncertainty of who will start.I do agree, Kolb had some tough matchups, and if he had played in the games Skelton played in, he may have put up better numbers over those games.certainly food for thought.Like I said, I was initially down on Kolb, but when I looked at these numbers I cant help but think if he can improve on them, or just keep the same numbers and cut down on the INT's he'd be a fantasy starter.

:goodposting: Either way I have zero interest in both of them, but if there's a new QB every week it's going to effect the skill position players, at least some. I've been saying Kolb sucks since getting into the league and never understood the hype behind him, so I'm expecting a mess. Still, looking like Ryan Williams is going to end up on a lot of my teams but he may be the only Cardinal I land.

I wouldn't wait to long to snag Kolb. I'm in a 16 team league and we are currently doing our UFA auction ($1300 cap). I drafted Skelton a couple years ago and figured I could get Kolb on the cheap. I ended up paying $37 for him! In comparison, I got Flacco for $41, Schaub went for about $46, Alex Smith $39. I was hoping to grab him for $20 or less. People must still think he can put up good numbers.

Whisenhunt is always an excellent interview, and was recently on MTC. In so many words, he put Kolb on the hot seat. Gave him a pass for the lack of off-season, new offense, and injury, but pretty much declared that expectations are as high as they can be and if they're not met immediately, he'll get pulled quicker than a pecker in a peep show.

My money is on Skelton.

well, at this point it's looking like you need to own both if you're going to own one.

any word on who's looking better in camp so far?

kolb is awful.

i don't expect him to get the leinart treatment (preseason cut due to no long term future with team), but he's not an upgrade over skeleton (fwiw i dont think either is a nfl franchise qb. kolb urinates in the pocket under no pressure and skeleton is woefully inaccurate)

situation and talent level isn't much different than leinart/Derek Anderson
