kyle orton named CHI bears starter (1 Viewer)

The man with the lowest QB rating in history gets the start. There goes Berrian for the playoffs.

that happend with the rex injury. If you think Berrian has the same value with brian as he did with rex, then your wrong. If anything, Berrian owners, should be happy, now there is atleast a chance that berrian may have some value/

Berrian had a pretty solid game with Griese last game. And he just missed him on a 45 yd catch...Berrian had one foot out of bounds. That would have given him 130+ rec yds.

As a Bears homer I suppose this is the correct play. Unfortunately I doubt we'll learn much as he'll be playing from behind with a ridiculously convservative playbook.

Why assume that? The Bears don't have anything to lose at this point. And lest we forget Orton was a rookie when he filled in for Grossman- on a much better team that only asked him not to turn the ball over. All indications are he has taken some big strides since then, particularly at this last camp. I have no dellusions that Orton will come in and be anything more than serviceable- but if he can manage to eek out a few first downs without turning the ball over he will immediately be the best QB to have played for the Bears this year. Considering some of the guys I see starting around the league this week, Bears could be a lot worse off. If nothing else Orton is interesting.

I won't delve into the past because basing career projections on a rookie year is a waste of time. I just think it is extremely telling that Orton is still the #3 QB and we have not heard his name until the Bears are out of playoff contention and the starter is probably lost for the season. I think if Orton had made great strides he would have come in in week 4 when Grossman went down, in week 10 when Griese went down, or in week 14 when Grossman went down again. If you are a #3 QB is there a better place to be in your 3rd year than behind Grossman and Griese? Grossman can't stay healthy and Griese has clearly never been the future. To wait until the Bears are mathmatically eliminated from the playoffs before he sees the field tells me Orton probably has a big bag o' nothing. Honestly, even if the Bears made the playoffs G or G weren't going to get you more than 1 and done anyway. Even though it's necessary to play Orton I think this is nothing more than going through the motions to "give a kid a chance". Like you said, maybe it will keep the fair weather fans tuned in another game or so. I hope I'm totally wrong and he's coming of age but I'm not holding my breath.

He wasn't bad last week with Griese. I have him backing up Edwards, Fitz and Jennings in case one is hurt.

You make a good case... for a team that hasnt already demonstrated itself completely hopeless in choosing or grooming QBs. The Bears do all sorts of things personel wise that leave everyone scratching their heads. Orton is a no-brainer at this point... and would have been even if Grossman was healthy. But if Grossman WAS healthy he'd be playing right up until possibly the last week. Which is crazy. If Orton is going to stay on the roster you gotta find out if he can play at some point. Crazy, by Bears logic, but it just might work. Not much point carrying a 4th year QB as your #3 if either you have no confidence to play him in garbage time or you just dont feel like finding out. Fish or cut bait, thats what the good teams do.

I posted in the wrong thread, but I'll eat my hat if Orton stays the #1 in Chicago past this tank attempt. His faults(innacuracy, mentally weak, locks on to 1 WR) outweigh the positives(tall, good arm)

I'd say the Vikings should rush for 400 yards on MNF - the Bears have serious D-tackle issues.

But why do that, as it would keep the Bears offense off the field?

From a fantasy standpoint, its bad if you are a Berrian owner.....Griese and Rexy at least heaved the ball down field several times a game to get long yardage or TD opportunities for fantasy production. Orton, from what I recall from the past, is the king of the "10-16 100yds and 0TD's" type passing game. He's a conservative, check down passer. Deadly for Berrian owners...but Minn has a really weak pass defense so it leaves one guessing this week. If possible I'd stay clear of starting Berrian.

I really have no idea what to expect. I own Berrian, and love the matchup, but haven't seen Orton play and can't decide what to do with Berrian this week.

Does he check down all day long? Berrian has made some great catches in the last 2 wks...you'd think they'd try to get him the ball.

Muhsin was the leading WR when Orton was QB in 2005...here is what his log looks like.

Not too encouraging from Berrian's perspective. Not one game over 100 yds, and only 4 Tds on the year.

However, in 2005 they ran the ball over 450 times. Not sure how that compares to this year, but it seems they are more pass happy...and Minn will shut down the running game.

:gang2: The box will be stacked against the Bear offense with the terrible K Orton at the helm. The only play worth making is A Peterson in a point per rec league (and I would only make this if my options were very limited..)

As has been said earlier, its dangerous to make projections based upon what Kyle did as a rookie. He may check down, but having watched him in college, I know he has a rocket arm and displayed good accuracy. We didn't see that arm in his 2005 cameo because Chicago had a GREAT defense and Orton's instructions were to play it safe and not turn the ball over. Obviously, that defense is a shell of its former self and Kyle will be asked to make plays.I look for Minnesota to dominate on the ground early and for Kyle to be winging the ball all over the field. If he throws the ball 30 times, I look for 15 completions. Half will go to the RBs and TEs based on the Bears game plan. That leves Mush and Berrian to split the other 8 catches. i'd also expect 2 or 3 interceptions and a couple of sacks, making Orton a pretty poor play. On the other hand, Berrian and Mush could be decent WR3 options.

So, Orton is probably NOT a good play. Can we come to some kind of discussion on whether Berrian, Muhsin, Peterson, and the TEs are worth a look?

I remember Orton throwing the ball all over the place at Purdue...and I think he does have a decent arm.
