This is in part due to the fact that Worilds is dealing with a quad injury.someone should feel free to correct me..."mike" is the middle LB in a 4-3 defense. "mack" and "jack" are middle inside LBs in the 3-4 defense. "mack" would be expected to have value in that setting. foote could be a decent pick on the waiver wire because he's familiar with the system and been productive in the past. he's been a back-up in Pitt since returning the last two seasons after a stint in Detroit as a starter. i can't speak to his performance going into this season though.that said, i am a little surprised that they are doing this. worilds has been groomed to harrison's replacement and the chatter was how he needed the playing time. perhaps this says as much about making timmons productive and his role on the defense as it does about worilds?
WOW. Good answer, thanksWorilds ain't ready for full time duty. He will likely be brought in on rush downs though with Timmons going back to his normal role in the middle(this is what they were doing on Sunday, anyway, for a short time after Harrison got busted up. That's what I THOUGHT I saw anyway). And FWIW, I've never heard the LILB in a 3-4 referred to as anything other than "Mike". Mike is the LILB, Mack is the RILB, SAM is the LOLB and WILL is the ROLB. At least they are in LeBeau's 3-4. If they're slugging Foote in at the Mack that's not his most optimum position. He's slow and he will sometimes take false steps. The Mack is mostly responsible for covering the backside and running down plays from behind. That's why(typcially) Timmons has played so well from that spot...he can use his speed to pursue/blitz. That ain't Larry Foote's game. He'd be far better served at the Mike.I wish they'd just put Sylvester out there and see what happens. If the team insists on keeping Farrior on the field, getting both he and Foote out there at the same time significantly reduces the Steelers team speed in the front 7.
You seem to have a phenomenal grasp of the defense...care to share thoughts about Timmons' lack of production to this point? I counted in Week 3 he had only 39 tackle opptys (runs + completed passes) but the rest seems a mystery.Worilds ain't ready for full time duty. I think you will see Farrior on the field for 3 downs if this week because they know they can rely on him to get the job done!! Lets not forget folks you dont need to be the fastest LB to be optimum in a 3-4, you need to be smart and a sure tackler!! Farrior is both and they would be crazy not to lean on the Vet!!I dont see how Foote is worth rostering in anything but the deepest IDP leagues. He wont be a 3 down ILB, and Id almost guarantee Sylvester will take snaps from both him and Farrior in a rotation.
The way Owen Daniels was torching Farrior last week, you need more speed than his hoveround legsI think you will see Farrior on the field for 3 downs if this week because they know they can rely on him to get the job done!! I hope to hell he takes snaps from both. They need more speed out there.I dont see how Foote is worth rostering in anything but the deepest IDP leagues. He wont be a 3 down ILB, and Id almost guarantee Sylvester will take snaps from both him and Farrior in a rotation.
I dunno about "phenomenal grasp", I've just been watching the Steelers as long as LeBeau's been there(longer actually) so it's just become ingrained. Seen the scheme in action for a pretty long time now. I'm sure many of the Steeler fans around here could chime in about it too.As for Timmons play this year, it is suffering primarily because the DL isn't doing as good of a job as it has in year's past. The reasons are legion: Injuries to Keisel, Aaron Smith looking like a shell of himself and still getting run out there a ton(this is particularly problematic) , Hood getting manhandled at the POA so far, etc. etc. etc. In a nutshell what it amounts to is this: The defensive ends haven't performed how the scheme needs them to and that, in turn, has allowed teams to negate Hampton. With Hampton negated the ILBs are being forced to take on interior lineman with regularity. That's bad juju.Timmons is a freak, but he is not going to take on a guy who outweighs him by 60-70 pounds and win very often. Not his game and really not his job in this scheme. DL are supposed to keep the junk OFF the LBs so they can make plays. They haven't. Compounding it even more for Timmons, since he's the "pursuit ILB", is that the front 7 has been a sieve against the run so far. Very few plays are being forced to cut back behind the line of scrimmage, which in a perfect world would often be right into Timmons' wheelhouse, and the few that are being turned back haven't mattered as much because the LBs have their grill full of OG at that point. His, and all the LBs, tackle opps have been low because OLs are getting in the the linebackers and runners are getting to the secondary a ton.On the bright side, Brett Keisel is supposed to return soon(this week, I think) so that could help a bit.. Overall though....I don't see much changing with how their front 7 is playing until they realize that Aaron Smith/Farrior are probably just about done and need to be heavily rotated at this point. They've been great Steelers, but it looks like the wheels have fallen off both. You seem to have a phenomenal grasp of the defense...care to share thoughts about Timmons' lack of production to this point? I'm not so sure it's a guarantee that Sylvester will take snaps from Foote. If anything, he'll take snaps from Farrior. Remember, Foote had been taking snaps from Farrior. I wouldn't be surprised to see Foote on the field the majority of the time. Also, you can't rely on the "Vet" Farrior. His age is showing and proof is in the games. I bet Foote has a nice game (fantasy-wise) this weekend. I can see many tackles. Time will tell.'Kenny Powers said:The way Owen Daniels was torching Farrior last week, you need more speed than his hoveround legsI think you will see Farrior on the field for 3 downs if this week because they know they can rely on him to get the job done!! Great analysis. Thanks for the insight. A couple of rays of hope for Timmons owners is that a) he is healthy and b) with **** LeBeau at the helm hopefully he will begin to scheme to keep his LB's a little cleaner.ETA: Apologies to the board for the Timmons hijack but obviously the value of the whole PIT LB crew is interrelated.'5-ish Finkle said:I dunno about "phenomenal grasp", I've just been watching the Steelers as long as LeBeau's been there(longer actually) so it's just become ingrained. Might want to rethink that one hoss...Per Rotoworld:Had a couple of nice games in a row. Thinking of starting him over Mayo.
Yeah, on second thought maybe you should just stick with Foote. You're obviously on top of things.Interesting. Foote played really well over the last two games too. I gave up on Timmons long ago, so he isn't sniffing my starting lineup, hoss.
