Lance Briggs (1 Viewer)

The Trib believes Rosenhaus blinked first in the stalemate by offering a "new approach" in contract dealings. But if Briggs is indeed leading the holdout cause and serious about sitting out, Rosenhaus' blinking may not matter.
It's extremely uncharacteristic of Rosenhaus to be publically recognized as blinking first, and if all the reports are true, he is the one offering this "new approach". Unfortunately, that's pretty ambiguous and who knows if the Bears are even interested in this "new approach". Still, it's good to see the door open a crack with camp approaching. It would be a loss, but if Jerry Angelo does one thing well, it's find mid-to-late round defensive gems. I feel pretty good on the odds of one of Williams or Okwo turning out to be at least serviceable. In no way would I predict him to be the next Briggs, but Okwo's write-ups sound an awful lot like Briggs' coming in to the draft. If I trust Angelo with anything (and probably the only thing), it's separating the chaffe from the wheat when it comes to defensive guys without the outstanding measurables or accolades.

In my opinion, the only way Briggs signs long term is if he lowers his demands (price). I don't see it happening. The so called "new approach" better have a price reduction, or I think it's a waste of time.

So what exactly was Rosenhaus proposing?

That's unclear. The Bears already have offered to rescind the franchise tag on Briggs for 2008 if he signs, and they've said they weren't interested in revisiting an extension. Speculating, that would leave at least two plausible alternatives: 1) A long-term deal worth slightly more than the one turned down in '06 but less than the $20 million in guaranteed money Briggs was said to be demanding last winter or 2) A one-year deal worth more than the $7.2 million the franchise tag dictates that essentially would make Briggs a free agent in '08 but pay him above what is allowed by the rules Rosenhaus has criticized.

Could mean anything. He should sign for one year and become a FA in 08.
