Laquan McDonald - Chicago Releases Video (1 Viewer)

I've been following this for a few weeks now, waiting to see what would happen today. Chicago finally released the video of the Laquan McDonald shooting.

Cliff notes:

  • October 2014 - Laquan McDonald shot and killed by CPD after allegedly threatening with a knife and refusing to obey police orders. Shot 16 times.
  • City of Chicago agrees to pay family $5m for wrongful death
  • November 2015 - Cop is charged w/ first degree murder and dashcam video is released

I haven't watched the video and don't plan to, but this could get bad here in the city. Protesters already out and increasing number. Most of the CPD force has been told to be in uniform and be prepared to assist.

"Van Dyke’s attorney, Daniel Herbert, has said the officer feared for his life when he opened fire."
Wow. That's pretty disgusting. Dude was walking AWAY from them. That is really the defense stance they are taking?

I just watched the video. I didn't see anything " threatening".
allegedly.....per CPD of course. From all accounts he was walking away and no words were ever exchanged between the cop and McDonald. Cop should for sure go down for it, but nothign is ever a given these days

I won't watch it, because I honestly don't need to see a kid executed, which is exactly what it sounds like happened. I think it was 13 shots while he was on the ground. Disgusting. Officer has been charged with 1st degree murder and being held without bond.

What are they protesting? The family was paid 5M and the cop has been charged with murder.
Same thing I wondered.
Chicago has a long history of police brutality and coerced confessions.
I understand, but that doesn't explain what they're protesting about this one. Officer is already charged, and settlement made on wrongful death.
Considering it took over a year to charge and that it's been verified that the police deleted surveillance footage from the Burger King, a little civil disobedience is probably in order.

I'm sure we're well past the civil part by now though.

Continued CPD brutality? It was supposed to be better after Burge but it's not getting better.

I think there's enormous anger once the video came out because it's worse than anyone imagined, and it took 14 months for the guy to be charged. I agree the timing seems odd to have the protests after the guy was charged, but it's anger that's bubbled up over this for a long time as the police have consistently told an apparently false story that was not supported by the autopsy, witnesses, etc. and yet the mayor (who is otherwise hated anyway) refused for so long to release the video (why it's his decision I don't know, but it's what I've read).

There's also a lot more surrounding this like whether other cops were shooting (the bullets entered from all different angles), the "missing" Burger King surveillance video, etc.

Just CPD being CPD...corrupt and not trustworthy. History that was allegedly history but this shows that may not be history. Also heard tonight this former cop had multiple complaints for excessive force, drawing weapon unnecessarily, etc type of complaints.

Your reference to Burge was spot-on.

Just watched the video. Not good, but not as bad as I was led to believe. The victim is moving more parallel to the cop(s) than directly away as described somewhere. The victims left hand is down by his side right before being shot with the knife in his right hand. I could understand having some sense of a threat, but not enough to justify shooting him.

And people question why no one trusts CPD and why no one will come forward. CPD or the gangs, not a good option on either side IMO. Can't trust anyone.

ETA I am a middle aged white man from the suburbs and I am not sure I would trust the CPD.

I've seen a shortened clip ('only' showing the first shots that put McDonald down), and it's totally inexcusable. No threatening action; a few cop cars there and a couple cops out of their vehicles; a good distance between the cop and McDonald. No reason not to wait it out. Worst case, shoot him in the leg.

But then again, this is Chicago ...where in one of the suburbs two years ago, a cop (with others nearby) killed a 95-year-old WW II vet at an assisted living facility by shooting him with bean bags because the man was agitated and raised a carving knife in the air. The cop was acquitted of the charges against him.

Did they try to bury this news around thanksgiving?
Local reporter had to go to civil court to sue the CPD to get access under the FOIA. Other BIG news agencies made similar requests, but they are lazy and made no effort to demand the video.

This ####### scumbag was able to still hold a desk job for the past year while everyone but the public knew what was on the video.

The family did not want the video released.

Original story released when this happened said he was only shot once in the chest. They tried to bury this since day 1.

The video has also been described as "disturbing" and so graphic that McDonald’s mother is concerned its release would prompt an uproar, according to an attorney representing the McDonald family. Attorney Mike Robbins said Thursday McDonald's mother "is not looking forward to the day this is released."

wtf was this Van Dyke thinking . Kid was moving like he was high as a kite and could have easily been nabbed by all the police on the scene

Fatigue. Clearly unjustified shooting.

20 million arrests annually. We focus on the outliers.

818 murders in about a year. Most black on black. No protests.

Kid goes on a PCP rampage. Killed wrongly. But no one says, yeah... Our community needs to step up and police it's own.

Another terrible story what else can you say.

Why is Rahm in trouble with this?
If he's seen it, he's complicit in keeping it under wrapsIf he hasn't seen it, he's asleep at the proverbial wheel

There is no win here for Rahm

Jeez. They couldn't just tackle him and cuff him?
I understand what you're saying, but I wouldn't want to try to tackle someone who was delusional and weilding a knife.
Looks like there were 3-4 cops there. Aren't they trained for that?
Tackling/dismantling a guy with a knife? Even if you are trained for that (which sounds like very specialized, Krav Maga type training), that sounds like an easy way to get stabbed.

They were waiting for someone with a Taser.
