Angry Eagles accuse LaRon Landry of spitting, dirty play

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 16, 2010, 7:38 AM EST

After the Eagles finished whipping the Redskins on Monday night, several Philadelphia players said trash talk and dirty play from Redskins safety LaRon Landry motivated them.

Eagles center Mike McGlynn claims that Landry spat in his face twice during the game.

“Landry came and spit in my face, and that fired us all up,” McGlynn said, per Philadelphia Sports Daily. “We were looking to really put the afterburners on them. It’s good to see that we came out and score 60 points, almost. We all want to play the game with all the respect in the world, but when you’re disrespectful like that. . . . I just think there has to be more respect for the game than that. It’s a terrible thing, and we said, ‘Let’s just keep pouring it on them.’ ”

This is the second straight week that an NFL player has accused an opponent of spitting in his face: Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder said Ravens fullback Le’Ron McClain spat in his face during a confrontation last week, although the NFL said there was no conclusive evidence of the spitting. If Landry was caught spitting on tape, however, he’ll likely be heavily fined, and maybe even suspended.

But that’s not all that had the Eagles fired up. Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson, who suffered a concussion on one of the plays that led to the NFL’s increased emphasis on player safety this season, said Landry came up to him before the game and threatened to knock Jackson out.

“He brought up my concussion, and said, ‘I’m going to put you asleep again,’ ” said Jackson.

Landry’s comments led to a pregame skirmish, and some of Jackson’s teammates said Landry had gone way too far.

“Everybody trash talks, but there are certain things you talk about and certain things you don’t,” Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin said. “In incidents where someone is really hurt, or life-changing incidents like that – you don’t talk about those type of things. Thirty was running at the mouth a little too much.”

So Landry got the Eagles fired up. And the Eagles’ revenge was displayed on the scoreboard.
More here

If true, this is pretty awful sportsmanship on the part of Redskins' S LaRon Landry. According to Jay Glazer, Landry and DeAngelo Hall were mocking Eagles WR DeSean Jackson for suffering a concussion earlier in the season. Local Philly reporters saw the same thing saying that Hall and Landry were making "go to sleep" gestures. The taunts led to a little pregame skirmish between the teams with Landry, Hall, & Jackson right in the middle.

Just a few minutes later, DeSean burned Landry for an 88 yard TD on the first play of the game. Quintin Mikell put it best, "Maybe he should have been more ready to play ball than talking."

Landry's embarrassing behavior didn't stop there. According to Eagles center Mike McGlynn, Landry spit on him twice.

Birds center Mike McGlynn said Redskins safety LaRon Landry had spit on him twice -- once after the Birds' third TD in the first quarter, and once late in the game, when the Eagles were running out the clock

"He got his," McGlynn said. "We got after him pretty good. The things that he did during the game, spitting on me twice … I don't have no respect for that. There's no place for that in our game."

It's hard to tell what was more embarrassing, Landry's play or his behavior.

McGlynn also said that the Eagles didn't take too kindly to Donovan McNabb's comments after the Redskins win over them earlier in the season when he said the Eagles "made a mistake" trading him.

"I think that fueled a fire in us, and we came out with a purpose tonight," McGlynn said. "It was good to see the way we played against him."

Note to the rest of the teams on the Eagles schedule. You really might want to consider not giving the Eagles any "bulletin board material." You won't like them when they're angry.
:)

Boo hoo, he made fun of my concussion! :) :)

I don't condone the spitting, and of course there's no denying that the best revenge was had, but whining about trash talk about concussions is ridiculous. I can only imagine what the old timers would be thinking about such weak sauce from Desean.

Apparently spitting is a required habit for players named Le'Ron or LaRon?

I don't know...are there any more players with this first name in the league that we can look to be doing the spitting next week?

At the end of Jackson's TD he turned around and looked like he was saying something to whoever was trailing him for Washington (may have been Landry). Best revenge is beating a jabberjaw on the field.

I agree. They are big boys.Supposedly Reid took this info in the pre-game speech though and used it to really fire them up.

how 'bout LaRod (stephens-Howling)

 And it was Landry that he had just burned. Trash talking FAIL.

LaRon is a beast, glad I have him. As long as he continues to put up tackles/numbers he can spit on whomever he chooses as far as I'm concerned with. :coffee:

 to the spitting, if true. That's classless, to say the least.

As far as the other trash talk to DJax, he needs to quit crying and act like a man.

spitting is classless and cowardly. I think delibratley spitting on another player should be an automatic suspension. There is no place in the game (or society in general) for spitting at/on another person.

I don't think DJax was crying about the trash talking. I think he was just saying Landry tried to get under his skin, but he showed him up anyway.

And what's with defensive players making a tackle 20 yards down the field and coming up with a big flex to the crowd when they're getting hammered by 30 points? Saw the same thing in the KC-Denver game. Thats why Ray Lewis should be on every team. Somebody needs to teach these guys there is a time for showing off... but when the other team is scoring on you at will, that is not the time.

Also required for Redskins safetys I believe...See Sean Taylor vs. the Bucs in the playoffs (I don't need to specify what year as the Skins haven't made the playoffs enough for that search to be tough...)

I didn't see any crying by DJax last night, unless by "crying," you mean "putting up 100 yds and a TD in a complete rout."

Landry and Hall are idiots. Their antics resulted in an 88-yard TD strike for the first play of the game. You can;t tell me that Jackson didn't ramp it up a bit more than usual to grab that ball and embarass those fools.

Wasn't Landry involved in other spitting incidents? The guy sounds like a complete #####.

Except, he did cry about it. Did you read the link?
Most of the quotes were from McGlynn not Desean. The quote from him I read as basically confirming what Landry said. Where do you see him crying? As far as acting like a man, he sure made Landry look like a boy on the first play of the game. Classless to spit on anyone. Look like a fool talking smack and then getting your ### handed to you right out of the gate. Landry's jacked, but him and Hall are dorks that got worked all night.

Really? You think Jackson ramped up some extra speed because he was steaming mad at Hall and Landry? Hilarious!

You really think it's ridiculous that the trash talk would have caused Jackson to give a bit more on that play to embarrass Landry? There's a reason some teams look for bulletin board material during the week to give their team extra motivation.

As a Redskins fan, I do have a problem with the trash talk as it seems consistent with two guys who have an inflated sense of their own self-worth and talent. DeAngelo Hall is one of the worst offenders in the league (and I wish I could have placed money on him starting to limp after getting burned by Maclin), but Landry is being enabled by a bunch of media sycophants for playing better than anyone else (except for London Fletcher) on a truly wretched defense.

Basically, Jim Haslett has used Landry to blitz and play up in the box. And because the Skins front seven is pretty bad, it's given Landry a lot of tackles. But Landry remains kind of lousy as a cover safety. And because the other Redskins safeties are also lousy (Kareem Moore, Reed Doughty, Chris Horton) we can't really afford to not have Landry cover people. LaRon Landry is only a "great player" if you somehow scheme to have him play like a linebacker in a 3-5 defense. If the Redskins could stop the pass while doing that, that would be fine. But they can't. So if your numbers come at the expense of your team playing an effective scheme, I'm not sure how much room you have to be woofing. Last night, the Redskins played Landry mostly two deep and he was awful. He hasnt' been good in the two deep shell all year.

I don't blame Landry, per se, for Jackson's touchdown. Because I already know that LaRon Landry can't stay with DeSean Jackson if Michael Vick is given 7 seconds to throw a seventy yard ball. It was a great throw and Jackson accelerated with the ball in the air like Jerry Rice. Great play. I'm not sure any safety in the league could have stopped that play if Vick gets that much time. But this isn't the only time Landry has been burned.

To say that Jackson found more speed than he normally has because he was mad at Landry is hilarious to me. People really believe that? Bulletin board material serves a purpose on helping players prepare more. It is just not realistic that a player would go from not burning a player on a fly route because someone said mean things about him. That would have been a TD if Landry said something or not.

Without Hall or Landry, the Redskins have ZERO wins this year.

Football players are humans, not robots. Inspiration in many forms can absolutely allow one to perform above their normal "peak" levels. Why do you find that hard to believe? I don't think players read the bulletin board material and go "Man, that really riled me up, I'm gonna go watch some more film and prepare..."

So you think that if Landry doesn't say anything that he stays with Jackson and it is not a TD? I hate to say it, but that is a TD even if Landry called him poopypants.

Landry did this the other week in the loss to Detroit --- made a show for the crowd when he was in on a tackle for a short gain.A short gain that gave the Lions a first down.

In fairness, the award for ridiculous flexing this week goes to Rocky McIntosh. Down 28-0, he comes on an outside blitz and forces Vick's first incompletion. And then poses. I couldn't even be mad at him. I was laughing too hard.

Have you seen Landry's mouth guard? he wouldn't be able to spit in someone's face with removing it. Should be easy to catch on video, if he took it out and spit in someone's face.

I call BS...

Man, talk about missing the point. They probably don't try a bomb to DJAX on the first play of the game. Could just be a coincidence, but I seriously doubt it. BTW adrenaline can have a significant impact on your physical attributes. Who cares anyway, the guy got completely owned on the first play of the game. I can only imagine the satisfaction Jackson felt after that play.

Boo freakin hoo Deshawn.....what a baby. Who cares if they made a pillow gesture. WOW.....maybe he will tweet about it today and post on his facebook page about it. Kids these days are such babies.

What little I've seen of Landry, he is terrible in coverage. Maybe a Roy Williams v2.0. He seems too concerned with being big, and because of that unable to turn and stay with anyone. At this point, would it make any sense to move him to LB? What does he weigh?

I missed that one.Haynesworth has gotten a lot quicker on his breakdance celebration move I see. The one when he lays on his stomach and spins in a circle so fast it almost seems like he's lying still.

yeah, sorry but I definitely don't get where people think he cried about anything. Maybe I'm missing a quote or video or something that gives an indication that he did anything other than repeat what was said to him after he was asked, 'what did he say to you?" he made a self entiled doucher look like a fool on the biggest stage in football. I hope he tweets about it.

Okay, so let me ask you: If Jackson had a disabled child, would it be okay to make fun of his kid? What if his mother had just passed away, and he mocked him for that, would you feel the same way?I'm just trying to see if there are any limits. People are saying Jackson should "be a man" about it, but I wonder if it's "manly" to be on the other side.

I agree. The best example of that was Fitzgerald's TD toward the end of the Super Bowl. Yes, he's fast, but nobody was going to catch him. It was the biggest game of his career and he was going to score that touchdown. I think he found an extra gear on that play. I can imagine other things motivating players as well.Edit: Decide for yourself.

He obviously did act like a man by beating the scumbag on the opening play. If its OK to trash talk then its also OK to use that trash talk to fire your teammates up and then go out and embarrass the guy on national TV.Props to DeSean :lmao:

So now Jackson lobbies Reid to change the play calling, which Reid has worked on scripting all week because Landry talked trash? The first 15 or so plays of the game are scripted. So now Jackson goes to Reid and Reid says "he said what??? run a deep fly pattern on the first play and Vick will throw you a perfect pass".

If as a player you felt it was ok then go for it. Personally if I felt doing that would help me win the game I would do it. At the end of the day its all about winning.

No doubt adrenaline helps out, I'm not saying otherwise. Poopypants or no poopypants, Jackson burns Landry every time in that situation even if they were bff's. With it being MNF with a share of the division lead on the line against a division rival who beat you earlier in the year I think he was stoked up either way. I'm sure Landry was equally motivated. The same goes for that Fitz play. It was a great play, but he will burn James Harrison and Troy Polamalu in a foot race any day of the week. You have a screw loose if you think that if Landry keeps his mouth shut that play doesn't happen.

Except that the Eagles ran that exact play against the Colts early in the game last week. Motivation plays a huge role in team sports. It's generally not smart for the opposing team to supply extra motivation. In this case, I was very happy with the result.

Exactly, so they decided to put the play in their script again. I'm sure it was all to get back at Landry, not because they thought Jackson could burn him deep 1v1. Must have been the trash talk.

The strategy was to get Jackson lined up on Landry and was probably already part of the gameplan. I don't think it's a outlandish to think that Jackson was looking forward to that play a little more after what happened before the game. People in this thread are talking about motivation and how that can lead to greater focus. You are talking about the gameplan, they are two different things.
