Chiefs Johnson confirms he had a cracked bone in his foot

By RANDY COVITZ

The Kansas City Star

PHOENIX _ Chiefs running back Larry Johnson tried clearing up the mystery of the cracked bone in his right foot that caused him to miss the last eight games of the 2007 season.

“I can’t even tell you the medical term,” Johnson said on Wednesday while attending Super Bowl activities. “The bone in my fourth toe by the joint had a slight crack in it, and it shifted a little bit.”

But why all the secrecy? Johnson never disclosed the nature of the injury on the record, and the Chiefs even cited HIPAA privacy laws, something the NFL does not do when it comes to on-field injuries.

“No one knew what I had,” Johnson said. “You can’t diagnose something and not know what it is. My foot was so swollen, no one knew what was going on. They thought it was a Lisfranc, they thought it was my heel, they thought it was my ankle.

“Until you get the CT scans and really rotate my foot with high technology … it’s very, very small, but you’re not going to be able to see it. It looked worse than it was, but at the end of the day, we didn’t know what was wrong.”

The Chiefs elected not to place Johnson on injured reserve until the last week of the season, holding out hope he could play.

“Any time you get a cracked bone or a bone is misplaced, it just takes a while for it to heal,” said Johnson, who said he’s 100 percent now.

“Of course you can run on it, but you’re going to feel an extreme amount of pain if you don’t let it rest for a long amount of time. When I kept trying to come back, I was pushing it too hard where I was always going to have pain.

I think letting it rest a little bit is going to get back to 100 percent like it is.”

Johnson was attending Super Bowl activities promoting a Campbell’s Chunky soup campaign which is donating one million cans to food banks across the country.

Topic is a bit misleading...

Vindication for the Denver reporter and many of the Message Board pundits who highly suspected that LJ's foot injury was of a season-ending nature.

I have Larry Johnson in a new dynasty league (take-over) & I'm really starting to look forward to the return of the old LJ. With a little help from the OL, he could easily return to top form. If so, you're likely looking at no worse than a top-3 or 4 player (overall).

I gotta be honest, your going to be looking for a long time if you expect the old LJ to come back. An aging, disentegratingoline combined with God knows who at QB and conservative play calling isn't going to help him get back up there.

I hear ya, but things can change quickly in the NFL. Given LJ's talent, & the fact he's done it before, makes him a player that definitely could change the fortune of your fantasy team over the course of the next 2 or 3 years.

It seems you are a bit mis-informed about KC and LJ.FACT #1 - LJ did fine in 2006 behind an OL w/o Roaf and with a gimpy Will Shields. Oh and that consevative coach was there who led KC to the playoffs.FACT #2 - There may only be one O-Lineman remaining in 2008 from that '06 line. Casey Weigmann will be goneWill Shields has retiredJohn Welbourn will be goneKyle Turley has retiredJordan Black is goneWe now have '07 FA signee Damien McIntosh and veteran All-Pro Brian Waters. I would put money on it that those ore the only two OL returning. The pick at either 1.4 or 1.5 is probably going to be an OT.FACT #3 - LJ has a new Offensive Coordinator in Chan Gailey, who is a huge upgrade over unknown Mike Solari.FACT #4 - LJ now has a young back in Kolby Smith to shoulder some of the load.FACT #5 - You got one thing right, the QB situation is horrible.

I think y'all may be missing the point here...

FACT #2 - I might possibly be able to potentially hypothesize the improvements KC will make along their O-ling in the offseason.

Why would you assume that gone=improvement?
