Larry Johnson (1 Viewer)

Preface to say, I am a Larry Johnson owner in my dynasty league.

LJ will be 28 years old this coming season and has logged 1050 carries to this point in his career. Pretty light workload given his age, due mostly to backing up Priest Holmes early in his career. I know someone around here did a study showing that age is the number one factor in how much more a RB has left. 30 generally being considered the magic number.

Personally I think LJ is a hold right now due to his value being so much lower than it was just a year ago. I just don't think you'd get a very good return on him at this point given his age and last years production.

Next season promises to be better for LJ, as he will have a full training camp, and the Chiefs know their #1 goal in the offseason is to upgrade their offensive line. He may not reach his lofty numbers of 2006, but I don't think forcasting a top 10 season is unreasonable.

I do think LJ is one of the most talented backs in the league. I don't believe that the RBs that have been productive into their early 30s have him beat in talent. Curtis Martin, Fred Taylor and Emmitt Smith have all shown us that they can get it done in their early 30s. Given LJs light workload, I think he very well could have four more productive years.

Thoughts?

I dealt him for Holmes, Bowe and 2.03 and I feel pretty good about it, although LJ was my RB3 according to the dynasty rankings voters.I think he's got another top-10 season in him, maybe 2 but that o-line and QB situation will keep him out of the top-5 more than likely. 05'-06' LJ is just a memory. I could see 05'-06' Rudi-type numbers.

I'm having a very hard time deciding if I should hold onto LJ or MBIII in a keeper league next season.
I would sure like to see what KC did with their Offensive line before I made the call on that one. Jake Long plus a good FA or two could go a long way toward making LJ a stud in a hurry again. Barber is certainly a talent, but as plenty of people have mentioned here, can he hold up given his style?

LJ's value took a big hit when Herm Edwards became HC in KC. Regardless of LJ's running style, I don't foresee anything more than 1300/10 until the whole team is fixed, I simply foresee the sputtering NYJ offense under Herm repeated again in KCC.

From Fan ball:

02/25 Chiefs: LJ to share backfield with McFadden?

The News

Larry Johnson may not be the only star RB in the Chiefs backfield in 2008 if the team ends up selecting Darren McFadden in the draft, according to a report on Yahoo. "He's a game-changing talent," said Kansas City president Carl Peterson. "He helped himself a lot today … if he's at No. 5 overall, I'm going to have to consider him long and hard. … And I have a great running back [Larry Johnson]."

Our View

At this point we have no idea why Peterson made this comment. Is it because McFadden was so spectacular that he felt compelled to? It is because Larry Johnson is still bothered by the mysterious foot injury that wiped out the second half of his 2007 season? Is it because he wants to drum up a trading partner for the team's pick? Stay tuned but this news doesn't exactly give us the warm and fuzzies about LJ's future.

Peterson is hoping someone will move up to take him in my opinion. Either that, or hoping a team already picking before the Chiefs takes him. I wouldn't look too much in to the Chiefs taking him.

:goodposting: LJ's talent isn't in question. Herm's playcalling and offensive schemes are.

Yea, they may be getting scared that Jake Long won't be there at the 5 spot and are sending out feelers seeing if someone might want to trade up if McFadden is still available...

You don't think the fact that their line totally fell apart over a course of 2 years had anything to with it?

that team has too many holes to even THINK about this scenario... not to mention they just paid LJ a lot of guaranteed money last year... i doubt if any team in NFL history has carried the salary cap burden they would have to at RB position if they were to draft mcfadden, it could be ruinous to the balance of the rest of the roster composition...in a few years when LJ is 30, they will have to start thinking about how they want to address it, but now is not the right time...
