The other thread about Ike Hilliard got me thinking about mediocre WRs that hung around forever. Ike Hilliard hasn't been any good in years, yet he's still on a roster. This is now his 11th season, and he's got a career total of 18 VBD points.

Name the six WRs whose career started since the merger, to play 10 or more years in the NFL with fewer career VBD points than Hilliard, but at least ONE career VBD point. Here's a list of the WRs that have entered the league since 1970 to play 10+ years and never record a VBD point (rank in the top 30 fantasy WRs):

Code:
Steve Tasker	   13Dwight Stone	   14Chris Walsh		11Jim Jensen		 12Aubrey Matthews	11Pat McInally	   10Robb Thomas		10Desmond Howard	 10Mike Young		 10Mike Wilson		10David Patten	   10Terry LeCount	  10Shawn Jefferson	13Theo Bell		  10James McKnight	 10Torrance Small	 10Butch Johnson	  10

I was going to say Proehl, but then I recalled that he had a few decent years out in Arizona.

A fair amount of names on that list were special teamers.

Yeah, Stone and Tasker and Howard all stand out.The six guys that have hung around as long as Hilliard and have even lower VBD total are all legit WRs, though. A couple are even still active WRs.

A few hints

Two of the six WRs, like Hilliard, are still active.

Another two of the six WRs, like Hilliard, had their big VBD year as Giants.

The last two WRs were short and small.

Sean Dawkins?

And as an aside, some of the guys you've listed have ben useful NFL players, just not for fantasy. Hilliard has been a serviceable #3 WR for his NFL team for much of his career.

As has Engram, who's also been a special teamer.

Since I have nothing better to do at this hour but meander around pro-football-reference.com:

mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

Active:

Bobby Engram

James Thrash

Giants:

Chris Calloway

Mark Ingram

Midgets:

Leo Lewis

Kelvin Martin*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();

Dawkins did not play enough years and scored too many VBD points.They've been serviceable players, but less talented (and productive) players haven't hung around as long.

Sticking with the Eagles WR theme from Thrash & Dawkins:

Charles Johnson? I guess I could go check, but that's no fun, really.

Exactly. There have been players with MORE talent who haven't hung around as long. Maybe those guys (like the Michael Westbrooks, Fredie Mitchells, etc.) have not really been special teams contributors or had ten cent heads.Generally if you look at the guys on your lit, you will find people who are hard working, or have that rep, and often are solid ST contributors.There's a reason Brian Mitchell is 3rd all-time in all-purpose yards, and special teams is the reason.

Jurevicious would count, but he's only played 9 complete seasons. If he scores fewer than 4 VBD points this year, then he'll join the group.
Funny thing about Vicious is how different he is from the rest of these guys. They're all short possession receivers who didn't get many TDs.

Freddie Mitchell's a bad example because he wasn't very productive. Westbrook is a better example.It's just surprising so many of these players have made it to ten years. Put it this way -- I don't expect Michael Jenkins to last another six years.To play for so long without being productive as a receiver is obviously rare, since very few have done it. Engram, Hilliard and Jurevicious all strike me as the tease guys who showed flashes but never could consistently deliver. But all had value as WR3s and WR4s. In baseball, they might be called AAAA studs.

Ed McCafferty(sp?) ?

Eddie Kennison?

Johnnie Morton?

Curtis Conway?

I have no idea how to do VBD so i am just tossing out names

What you are failing to understand is two things:1. NFL <> FF.2. Special Teams count.Lack of FF relevance means little for career length, when you are talking about players who do things that don't show up on a FF stat sheet.These guys are generally good special teamers, or in Tasker's case - exceptional. They are adequate-good WR's, often being in the rotation as a #2 or #3 WR.To give another example that isn't a WR - Reno Mahe this season. He was goign to be out of football, but Greg Lewis (another Eagle creeping up on that WR list, needing longevity who stinks) & JR Reid suck as returners, so he gets called back. Mahe's main skill is to be able to do a lot of things just about adequately, but special teams well. It's a way to a career.
