League allows celebrations again (1 Viewer)

Marvin Lewis not a fan:

“I’m not for that at all,” Lewis said, via ESPN. “We had a good standard, and the whole standard has always been, you want to teach people how to play the game the correct way and go about it the correct way, and that’s not a very good example for young people.”

Is this fn guy kidding me with the guys he has on his team???????
Reminds me of the recent Onion headline about Bill Cosby.    "Serial rapist disapproves of how you wear your pants".

Funny that high school and college kids can play the game and love it while not putting on egregious displays of look-at-me self love.  Too bad some of the pros just can't act like pros.
In all fairness, when the pros do it they are literally branding themselves and, whether all of us like it or not, are marketing themselves to earn money.  College kids can't do that due to rules as archaic as the ark and the predisposition that the only people that can make money off the athletes' talents are everyone except the athletes themselves.

We can criticize (and I am one of those people who do...and I'm not fair because while I may love the Merton Hanks chicken dance, I think the Zeke elliot "feed me" move is dumb) but the reality of it is it is literal money in the bank.  A guy can do something and then he winds up on a .com commercial or selling deodorant or something.  I'd say if any of us went into board meetings and ripped up the quarterly financials and screamed "And that's the bottom line, gentlemen!" and then got a bonus for it every time we did it, we would do it too. Regardless if the hot secretary said we were a neanderthal for doing so.

Great response.

Now that's a good argument for the pros doing it.  Not so much for the league condoning it or fans accepting it, but in as far as rationaling the behavior, yep - but I'm guessing most don't think that way when they are doing their cutesy little playacting.

Sometimes...when there is snow in the game and the player seems genuinely overjoyed and happy and then they show the fans and teammates enjoying it, that really is one of the simplest yet best celebrations.

I'll agree with that even if I'm more against than for that for personal reasons, or pulling the fans into the celebration like the Lambeau Leap.  That's cool.

See, now I really dislike the Lambeau Leap.  It probably has more to do with me being a Bear's fan but I always hated how they had special treatment with it.  They were allowed to do that but no other teams could do any celebrating.

Odd.  Being a lifelong Packers fan I have a profound respect for the Bears and their traditions.  Believe me, I am no fan of "Bear Down, Chicago Bears" but think it is cool how all the fans still sing it after TDs.  Thankfully it is a rare occasion.

Now that stupid tuba that some Minnesota pipefitter thought ought to be straightened and then blown at Vikings games?  That's just downright dumb and ranks up there with eating lukefisk as great things that happen in Minnesota.

I have plenty of respect for the Packers and it's why I feel the Bears/Packers rivalry is the best in sports but I just didn't like how the Packers were allowed to do their celebration while other teams could not.  I'm just assuming it bothered me a bit more just because it was the Packers.

Just because I dislike the Packers and the fans I know bother me doesn't mean I don't respect the team.  One of the things I think is awesome about them and also bothers the crap out of me is that they consistently draft players from the Iowa Hawkeyes.

I'm sure you don't like the Bears and plenty of their fans but you still have respect for them.  No different.

I love Bears fans.  One if my best friends is a Bears fan.  It's not their fault they have a severe mental handicap.
I have family that are Bears fans.  Without the rivalry football just wouldn't be as much fun.  Kind of like Iowa and Iowa State, except Packer fans have a lot more knowledge about football than Cyclone fans.  :lmao:

Small recompense for never getting to host a Superbowl.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have one there eventually.  The one in NY went well.
If it did not happen on Super Bowl 50 it will never happen. What better opportunity to host a game than on the anniversary of the first one which featured the Packers  The issue is lack of Hotel rooms, more precisely massively overpriced Hotel Mega Suites.  Where will the Paris Hilton's of the world stay and show off their money?

No the Super Bowl is not about football, football fans, or the common man.  It is about corporations and stars being seen showing off their wealth.  That is not going to happen staying at the Holidome.  True that there are some amazingly upscale resorts not to far away by Wisconsin standards, but much too far by NFL standards, particularly in the winter.  Even the new Titletown district will not compensate. Remember Jacksonville and Tampa did not have the facilities absent bringing in several luxury cruise ships as hotels.

Nope, the smallest market team which also lacks a powerful billionaire owner gets regularly hosed.  Small compensation to allow a fan-centric celebration that predated the ban to continue, and now, of course, that is irrelevant with the rule change.

Good point.
