Bentley lost for season

Browns general manager Phil Savage confirmed Thursday evening that center LeCharles Bentley had suffered a torn patellar tendon and will be lost for the season.

Bentley, who was injured in Thursday morning team drills, will undergo surgery as early as tomorrow.

"He was the face of our free agent class,'' said Savage before the evening practice session. "From an organizational standpoint, we've had our setbacks and this is one of them.''

Bentley, a free agent acquired in the off-season to solidify the offensive line, injured his left leg during the first full-team drills Thursday. He was blocking on a running play and apparently got his legs twisted in the pileup.

The Browns practiced in shorts and helmets for the morning drill and coach Romeo Crennel said it was done that way to prevent injuries.

"That's one of the reasons we didn't have full pads on today,” Crennel said, “because I thought by just going shoulder pads, those guys might stay off the ground and stay up and for the most part, they did. But sometimes, feet get tangled and guys end up on the ground.''

Savage said the injury did not occur from contact, but just in the way his foot planted.

Bentley was immediately attended to and was in obvious pain. His left leg was immobilized with an air cast and he was taken from the field on a cart. He was then taken to Cleveland Clinic to undergo an MRI and other tests.

Nose tackle Ted Washington, who was near Bentley when he was injured, said he did not hear a pop or any other noise.

"You just hope that it ain't too serious and that he'll be back here as soon as he can," said quarterback Charlie Frye. "But right now we're just praying for LeCharles. Hopefully he's alright."

Bentley, 6-2, 309 pounds, was a two-time Pro Bowl performer with New Orleans. He was signed by the Browns in March to a six-year contract, believed to be worth $36 million.

"He's a real smart guy and he's strong and he's the type of guy that you want playing center for you on your team,'' Frye said.

Man that sucks. The first play of the first day of camp? Man the Browns are a cursed franchise. What's next, KWII gets hit by a motorcycle?

My friend Dillon who we like to make fun of beacuse whoever he drafts seems to be cursed is at it again.

Droughns was picked 2nd overall in a keeper league (after 60 players were kept).

:X

Don't you just love early camp injuries? Yesterday Ryan Moats got hurt, and my stomach sank. I can feel your pain Brownie fans.

I guess the good thing is it's early so if its a minor injury that gives lots more time to heal. :) The flipside would be a year-ending injury incurred in meaningless training camp drills. :wall:

Browns' Bentley injured

10:11 a.m.

Browns center LeCharles Bentley, expected to anchor an improved offensive line, suffered what appeared to be a serious injury to his left knee during the first team drill of the day on Thursday in Berea.

Bentley went down in pain and could not put any weight on the leg. Trainers immobilized the leg with an air cast and he was taken from the field on a cart.

Bentley was signed in the off-season as a free agent after earning Pro Bowl honors for the New Orleans Saints. He is a native Clevelander, having starred at St. Ignatius High School and Ohio State.

FWIW, when your leg is put in the air cast it is SERIOUS

From ESPN:

Bentley screamed, "No," before remaining on his knees as the Browns moved their scrimmage up the field so trainers could attend to the 6-foot-2, 309-pound player.

He stayed on the ground in a seated position for several minutes before Cleveland's medical staff immobilized his left knee and carted him to the locker room.
And it was probably more like "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2531239

Browns fans are used to it, Look for Hallen to fill in. Not a Pro-Bowler but a tough and better than average back-up. He would be a starter for a lot of teams.

I'm going to camp on friday so i'll keep you posted.

From what I hear in the article and ESPN I will say a fractured leg or dislocated knee cap. Not good.

These thunderstorms rolling through the Cleveland area right now are quite eerie. Seems like they came out of nowhere and are intense.

Someone in the Browns organization must be personally responsible for the death of Baby Jesus.

I feel bad for their fans. Really I do.

I think someone in the Philadelphia Eagles management must be practicing voodoo. DON'T #### WITH ANDY REID!!!!

*Their message, not mine.

I waffled at laying -180 that Bentley would be blown out before the exhibition season even started, but I'm glad I went with my gut.Drinks are on me !!!!!!!!!!!! :banned:

P.S. Don't get pissed, Cleveland fans - I feel for you, I really do. It's just that this was inevitable.

OMG, will it ever end. Why do the football gods hate the Browns? It's just unreal at this piont.
Here is whythink what you want about modell but he never got his new staidum, so he left

lerner helped modell leave, they signed the deal to make it official on his private plane

the city cries like for some reason this is worse than when it happened to every other city in the world

Lerner gets the team

The city treats him like a hero EVEN THOUGH he helped sell their beloved browns up the river

so the football gods, being wise, saw all this and said

"fine, take your team, but we are going to screw with you for a LONG time."

How old are you? City was jinxed loooooooooooooong before that happened.

Got to see a replay of the play he was hurt on at lunch. Sweep to Droughns...Bentley tangled up with others...looked like someone rolled on him...he stayed down. Had a brace on the knee also.

ETA...ironic that one of the Cleveland Plain Dealer's columnists had written about Bentley in today's paper...

Bentley a luxurious necessity

Thursday, July 27, 2006

Bud Shaw

Plain Dealer Columnist

You know LeCharles Bentley's background. St. Ignatius. Ohio State.

Cleveland holds a spot in its heart for its own, a spot softer than the housing market. But that's hardly the reason to celebrate his arrival.

Bentley calls his homecoming "confetti and balloons," and is wise enough to already have summoned the cleanup crew to sweep it away.

"It's over," he said Wednesday. "Put away the newspaper clippings. It's football everywhere you go."

Oh, the places he's been.

The 26-year-old Bentley has twice made that NFL all-star game they hold in Hawaii. Can't seem to place the name right off hand. But that's what recommends him the most, not growing up here.

Sources say it's the Pro Bowl and it's played in February. It's also open to Browns players, but evidence of that is slight beyond the rumor that Jamir Miller made it to one.

The last time a Browns offensive linemen played there is even more of a historical search.

"Let's see," Doug Dieken said, giving it some thought after practice Wednesday, "it would have been Cody Risien."

Dieken, Joe DeLamielleure and Tom DeLeone all made it following the 1980 season. Risien was a Pro Bowler in '86 and '87. Bentley was 8 years old.

The lack of a 1,000-yard rusher in Jim Brown's town until Reuben Droughns staked his claim this past season no doubt went hand-in-hand with the muffled acclaim of so many of the Browns' offensive lines.

The drought nevertheless failed to prompt the expansion Browns to correct the mistake. General Manager Phil Savage changed that thinking in this off-season. Ryan Tucker is the only lineman who predates him.

Bentley's natural position, center, is the least sexy of any on the line. A single season of watching Jeff Faine's undersized finesse convinced the Browns of the need to remake the offensive front inside-out.

"That position was at the top of our list," coach Romeo Crennel said after the first full-squad workout. "And he was one of the better players at that position. He was on our radar screen. It worked out and we we're excited about that."

Crennel ends a lot of sentences talking about being excited. Expect him to ramp up to ecstatic if Bentley can manage to keep the Steelers' Casey Hampton from disrupting every handoff.

Quarterback Charlie Frye was asked about the Browns signing some free agents with local connections. The list includes Bentley, receiver Joe Jurevicius, offensive lineman Bob Hallen and punter Dave Zastudil. Frye didn't need urging to talk about Bentley.

"He's gonna be a great player for us," he said. "He brings a physical presence to the offensive line. And he's a real smart guy."

Bentley hears that and laughs, saying, "I'm pretty smart."

Celebrating his return as a reversal of the region's brain drain - college kids leaving the state to work - should be delayed until after the Browns face what Frye calls the "exotic fronts" of the Steelers and Ravens.

"I don't feel too bright right now," Bentley said. "I'm trying to get a system down. The good thing is I got Joe Andruzzi and Cosey Coleman beside me."

With that, he was off to sign more autographs for a fan base that would turn out 1,000 strong to see Browns players mow the grass. Imagine if there's ever really a reason for confetti and balloons in Bentley's hometown.

It's not just the Browns, it's all Cleveland sports franchises. Which is why I have to laugh when I heard Red Sox fans or Cubs fans crying. At least they have had championships in other sports. What exactly do we have here in Cleveland? Nothing but heartache. So this bentley injury doesn't suprise me. Like someone else said, this is Cleveland so he will be out for the year.

That sucks for Cleveland fans. On the first day of training camp in 2001, Jamal Lewis went down with an ACL. That was the end of the season right there.

Injuries suck.

And that was Al Lerner, Randy's dad. He did not sign a thing BTW, in fact he fought the move, but being a minority owner, he didn't have a choice. He wanted the Browns stay in Cleveland where MBNA is based out of.

ESPN.com is reporting that it is the patellar tendon and that they are doing an MRI to check to see if it is a partial or total tear. It is potentially a season-ending injury.
guessing it's going to be season ending either way, but if it was a total tear, they should already know, as his kneecap would be about 4 inches higher than normal.pure speculation, but i would guess incomplete tear at this point.

You are correct, but They would not release that information until after the MRI if it was ruptured.

you are right there. that's why i made sure to say that all i'm doing is speculating.

As much as I hate the Browns, I feel bad for them. This truly sucks.

Hopefully it won't be as serious as the early reports are making it sound and he'll be back on the field soon.

Source: Bentley to miss season

A source close to Browns center LeCharles Bentley said that it appears Bentley has suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee and will be lost for the season.

The Browns have not confirmed the injury and Bentley is still at the Cleveland Clinic.

Browns GM Phil Savage will address the media before the 5:30 practice.

Bentley was injured during a team drill in Thursday's morning practice at Berea.
