Two-folded here...

Would YOU rather win a SB or go into the HoF (obv without one)?

What do you think the majority of current NFLers would choose?

There’s no shame in the medium sauce game.

SB

You play… to win… the game.

I think the majority of players want the ring.

But there are a lot of players who want the “respect” ($$$), and HOF personal accolades.

It’s a good topic. I’d rather see it phrased as “huge contract vs Super Bowl” but the HOF aspect is an interesting twist.

HOF of course. Nobody remembers the 50th guy on a SB roster. Heck there’s guys out there who won a SB on a UDFA contract, never played a meaningful snap and and never saw a second deal. If you make the HOF, you are a legend forever and guaranteed to have maximized your earning power relative to era and position.

I'd rather win the Super Bowl and miss out on a Hall of Fame jacket and bust, than get that HOF jacket and bust but feel like my career was incomplete because of the missing ring.

I’m usually a team first kinda guy but I’d take the HoF. Be known as one of the best ever to play the game.

Going to the HoF probably means making more money along the way too.

I’d be Dan Marino before Trent Dilfer.
Exactly who made more money, left more of a legacy and has more respect Calvin Johnson or Jacob Harris who got a ring with the Rams but has 1 career NFL reception? Who would trade careers with who?

Hall of fame

The neighborhood I live in has a hall and it's so cool to see videos of my one handed nerf football catch, barely staying in bounds by the telephone pole and the video of that wiffle ball pitch with five feet of movement. It's great to take my kids there to see my bust too. They never believe me that I went around the world in one turn on that fall day. Now they know.

Billy just has a huge ring he sticks in people's faces and offers to tell us about the game we all watched on TV.

Obviously none of this is true but just trying to relate

How do folks feel about a slight tweak to the question:

Would you rather win the Super Bowl, or play on also-ran losing teams, but make significantly more money for your career?

I'd rather win the Super Bowl and miss out on a Hall of Fame jacket and bust, than get that HOF jacket and bust but feel like my career was incomplete because of the missing ring.
So you would rather be a 7th round pick, never see the field, win a ring, get cut and start working at your local Ford dealership than do what Tony Gonzalez did?
Not what I said. I should've elaborated having a great career but just missing out on the HOF, is better IMO than having a HOF career but just missing out on a Super Bowl ring.

H. O. F.

Even today's athletes don't take that "i prefer to win a ring over my own success" until AFTER they have had some form of success. My only form of athletic success, outside of high school, is when I thought I was big stuff trying out for a community college basketball league. I learned very quicky I went to a small school and I am not like the others. HOF for me!!!!

That’s a legit question in my mind. You want to be Randy Moss or Hines Ward? I can see those sides. The way the original ? Is phrased there’s too much risk of being a “nobody”.

Obviously I'll never have a SB ring or a HOF gold jacket jacket, nor on a losing team.

But I'd go SB win, HOF, then losing team with a ton of extra money that I probably won't spend in my life time.

I'm losing interest in Brandon Ayuk because I felt that the 49'ers offered him a fair contract and he is trying to market himself towards 2-4 million dollars a year more. Leaving the 49ers doesnt make sense. There's more to this story. There's other players in the NFL and all the talk room right now is about Brandon

It's no brainer HoF for me.

I legitimately wouldn't care if I never sniffed a playoff game in my life (which is probably why I am not a pro athlete, I lack the hunger)

But gimme that money, and make my face known.

I mean nobody in thread mentioned Aiyuk until your brought him up just now. I'm also not sure why you insist on referring to him so familiarly as Brandon, just seems a bit odd. Why not just call him Aiyuk?

Would you rather be the dishwasher at a prestigious 3 star Michelin restaurant or the host a bunch of super popular shows on the Food Network about burgers and pizza like Guy Fieri? I mean come on guys take the money!

It's really a question of team glory vs. individual glory and which you value more. I played a lot of chess when I was in high school, including winning the school tournament three years in a row. But when our chess team won our league, that to me felt better than any of the tournaments I won. My name is forever imprinted on the school tournament trophy, but I treasured our league victory the most. Obviously there's no money at stake there so that complicates the original question. I'm more for team glory above individual glory, though it's even better when being a big contributor to the team win. It's more satisfying obviously if you feel you were a part of that rather than a spectator on the sidelines.

So, possibly Ben Roethlisberger vs dan Marino? I’ll be Dan.
Roethlisberger is probably getting in to the HOF anyway. But I still wouldn't want to be him for reasons that should be obvious.
Yeah. I’m not sure there’s any QB close to the HoF and won a SB and won’t get in.
Hines Ward vs Chris Carter Is Probably Better, And I’d Be Hines. :oldunsure:

I'd rather be Rodney Harrison than Brian Dawkins, for example. Both all-time greats, Dawkins is in the HOF while Harrison isn't (yet) but Harrison has a HOF-worthy resume of his own and 2 Super Bowl rings.

But I'm not absolute when it comes to this, there are certainly levels to it. Obviously who wouldn't rather be Barry Sanders as opposed to Javian Hawkins?

I doubt a single NFL player would choose a ring over the HOF, but it's not cool to say it out loud. Just watch the Netflix series "Receiver" and see how much you despise Davante Adams for saying he only cares about his own greatness.

team accomplishments are great. being a cog of a winner and doing your part to get there is fantastic.

talking legacy though, wouldn't it be a little sweeter if you were known internationally as one of the elite? you are respected as a genius amongst the best, but unfortunately your team mates fall just a bit shy of winning the international tournament. you win the solo tournaments, but the US team comes in 2nd. i'd take that over coming in last in the solo tourney and win the team tourney as a weak link.

  1. Money
  2. Hall of Fame career
  3. Throw 4 touchdown passes for Polk High.
  4. Super Bowl
Seriously those 4 high school TDs might not sound like much but Al Bundy was ungrateful. Guy sold shoes and had a large home, horny wife with a great body and 2 kids who had potential if their dad wasn’t such a grump. Well at least one of them had potential. Bud was kind of a putz.

Gold jacket without a doubt. Winning a ring takes an entire team and is largely out of the control of one individual.

But with the Hall of Fame, you can look back at your career and know you put it in all the work necessary to be one of the greatest of all time.

The gold jacket would just mean so much more to me in the long run.

Also, HoF also implies that you made a lot of money during your career.

With the way folks are answering with largely choosing HOF, the right follow up might be - How many Super Bowl wins would it take for you to choose Super Bowl over HOF?

Why not ask the 53 best players to take massive salary cuts? I'm sure they'd all go for it. I mean, rings are more important than money, right?

Hall of Fame. Means I was a really good player that played a really long time and really made a lot of money + the potential for a post playing career.

53+ players get a ring each year.

The NFL started in 1920 and after 100+ years, there are currently only 378 members of the Hall of Fame.

Give me the more exclusive club for sure.

Hall of fame easily. I could play three years in the league and rarely make the gameday roster and win a super bowl.

If I am in the hall of fame I played 10+ years and made a lot of money to set me and my family up for the rest of our lives.

Depends for me. As a QB definitely Super Bowl for all other positions I'll go Hall of Fame. Right or wrong QB's are judged on rings. For players like Bruce Smith or Barry Sanders, not having a ring is rarely brought up. He's Hall of Famer Bruce Smith, Hall of Famer Barry Sanders... Not having a ring is brought up all the time with Dan Marino.

I'd rather have the career.

I've won trophies playing sport at a pretty decent level (Uk based soccer/football) and it's always underwhelming. Obviously that isn't comparable to winning the pinnacle competition in a professional sport but any average nobody can ride the coat tails of more talented people to collect a ring. It doesn't inherently have any worth if you weren't a major reason behind the success.

The joy for me is in the playing, and being good at, the sport. My career would be mine, I'm not doing it for anybody else. I don't need the ring for it to be a success in my eyes.

The real questions is....Would you rather be a smart like this guy and have dominated in chess or scored 4 TDs for Polk High?

It would be a tougher question to answer if there was more context on the SB side. As many have alluded to, it could mean you were a bench guy with no real accomplishments other than being in the NFL and you happened to be on a team that won the SB. I don't think I would choose that and go with HOF player easily.

But if I was a key component and had a very good playing career (but not quite HOF caliber) while winning a SB.........I probably choose the SB side of things.
