Hankerson is no way the 3rd wrI don't think he's any better or worse of a bet than Streeter who just declared (a year too early) from Miami this year too. He has tools, but on the field he doesn't know how to use them. We'll find out how much Shanny believes in him this off season. Personally, I think they bring in someone else with Hankerson penciled in a competition for the #3
Because he has shown himself to be an NFL starter?Washington wants him to be their #1 or #2, but he has not earned it yet. The league is littered with college stars that could not cut it in the NFL.He is a good dynasty flyer based on pedigree, but he hasn't shown much at all in the big leagues.Hankerson is no way the 3rd wr
Hankerson is only entering year 2.He has potential, but he does have a habit of dropping easy passes.Excellent skill set. Nice size and speed, has huge hands a la Nicks. Needs some weight room work to improve strength. If the hip fully heals and he gets a QB, he has nice upside and could be one of those year three WRs that do so well.
Actually, he has. Everyone knew he was still a little rough around the edges coming out of college, but all reports said he worked his butt off until finally cracking the starting lineup in week 9 (i.e., becoming the #1 or 2 WR). That was the infamous, John Beck "check down" game (Roy Helu had 14 catches for 105 yards) but Hankerson still managed more targets than any other WR (he also had a 2-pt. conversion). The next week, with Grossman back in the lineup, Hankerson started again and was 8/106 (more targets and receptions than any other player that game) before suffering his season-ending injury. Here's what Shanahan said about Hankerson after they lost him to IR:Because he has shown himself to be an NFL starter?Washington wants him to be their #1 or #2, but he has not earned it yet. The biggest questions surrounding Hankerson are his recovery and the strong likelihood that Washington is looking to add a "playmaker" WR to the roster this off season. As long as there are no problems with the former, the latter might limit him to being "just" the #2.“Through the preseason, I saw a player who was pretty inconsistent. You’d see consistency in practice, but it didn’t carry over into games,” Shanahan said. “Then you saw a guy, who as he grew, he was becoming a pro player, a player who was a lot more serious. The way he practiced on a day-to-day basis, you could see a light went on, and you could see his competitiveness as he ran the scout team against our players, which gave him the opportunity to start and earn a position. And then you could see with the way he played yesterday, when he caught the football, he’d turn upfield, and how he reached up and caught some big-time balls. That’s what you’re looking for.”
I agree with this more than him busting out in year 2. He has long arms that help him snag passes away from his body. Hankerson has a chance for sure, perhaps in year 3, when his rookie QB gets more rapport with him.@benson:Yeah. Guess I should've expounded, I see him making strides in '12. It is 2013 that I see him breaking out, which makes a great buy-low candidate. Hopefully he gets a competent QB and learns the offense this year. His concentration issues are valid, hence the drops. What I like about him the most is what he was able to do his senior year with a hodgepodge of QBs who played poorly. There are some youtube clips of him working on concentration drills with ex-Dolphins great, Mark Duper. If he puts in that type of work in the offseason he should be able to get over that issue fairly easily.
Unless he gets a Hall of Fame QB. In which case I expect WR 4 FF#s. a bye week cover, and then FF#2 stats in 2013.I agree with this more than him busting out in year 2. I was very surprised to see that the wide receiver who had the most offensive snaps was Aldrick Robinson, who was in on 66 of the Redskins’ 76 plays. One might have expected to see Hankerson get an increased role after Pierre Garçon left with a foot injury after just eight snaps. But Hankerson played just nine snaps and was not targeted for a single pass.
This does not necessarily mean that Hankerson is “in trouble” as @Patman1225 suggests. He just doesn’t appear to be ready for a steady, week-in, week-out role just yet. This year, he is likely to have a few big games and he will have some games where, like yesterday, he is invisible.
As for Robinson, we will see what his role is when Garçon returns to the lineup. He showed some special ability on each of his four catches and it seems likely that the coaches will find ways to get him into the lineup.
