Low Walker Pressure

When the Jacksonville Jaguars made Mike Walker their third-round pick in the 2007 draft, few people outside of Central Florida knew much about him, much less what to expect. Despite catching 90 passes as a senior at UCF, Walker entered the NFL Draft without much fanfare, and was considered a project, being a little over one season removed from a torn ACL.

Despite Walker’s surgically repaired knee, he still reportedly ran a 4.35 40-yard dash at his Pro Day, a number that skeptics say was somehow inflated. Walker showed great route running abilities in college, very strong hands, and if he hadn’t suffered the knee injury, would likely have been a first-round pick, as many saw him as a better player than the Denver Broncos surprising number one receiver and former UCF teammate, Brandon Marshall.

Through the Jaguars mini-camps, and first two weeks of training camp last season, Mike Walker was more than impressive. He showed fluid movement, great hands and agility, and a tendency to make circus type of catches. Walker was clearly the Jaguars best receiver despite being a rookie, and fans and media alike were jumping on the 6’1”, 200 lb. receiver’s bandwagon, as he was envisioned to be the second coming of Jaguars great, Jimmy Smith.

The honeymoon ended abruptly for Walker, as his production tailed off in preseason games, and he wasn’t able to keep up a consistent practice schedule due to the lack of strength in his surgically repaired knee. With the emergence of seventh-round pick John Broussard, and the free agent acquisition of Dennis Northcutt to go along with former first-round picks Reggie Williams and Matt Jones, as well as the dependable Ernest Wilford, Walker’s presence wasn’t desperately needed, and the team decided to place him on the injured reserve to let his knee fully heal.

Walker had a clean-out procedure done on his knee a few months ago, and when asked if Walker would be ready for action, Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said that he wasn’t able to go right now, but he was hopeful that the former Knight would be available for training camp. Walker spoke to reporters after the Jaguars voluntary workouts this week—

"I'm doing great, I'm feeling good," said Walker. "I had a little cleanup, a little scope. It was nothing serious. We just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything different than what we thought was in there.

"Everything looked good from the doctor's perspective and now it's just back to the basics."

Although Walker is no longer an unknown commodity in the minds of many Jaguars fans, as they remember the show that Walker put on last year in mini-camp. Walker will not have to be “the man” in 2008, or the savior of the Jaguars offense. Jacksonville set single-season franchise records in points scored (411), touchdowns (50), touchdown passes (28), and yards per play (5.6) without the talented youngster.

This season Walker will be in a completely different position and mindset. The Jaguars signed free agent wide receiver Jerry Porter to be their number one wide receiver, and Reggie Williams is coming off a franchise record 10 receiving touchdowns in 2007. The team still has Dennis Northcutt and Matt Jones to help carry the load, as well as former first-round pick Troy Williamson who was recently acquired. Walker will be able to begin his NFL career without fantastic expectations, and most importantly, with a healthy knee. The team can afford to bring Walker along slowly, and with all of the other weapons around him, he will likely not have to face many double-teams, at least early on. Walker will be able to begin his rookie year (even if it’s technically not his rookie year) playing with a rising star at quarterback, a fantastic running game, and some experienced talent around him at wide receiver. Expectations are low and the pressure should be off for Walker, as he is in a perfect position to succeed.

MY* sleepers

QB:

Matt Moore - he's been discussed recently, but the mainstream will sleep on him, and I don't like Delhomme's chances to come back

Shaun Hill - Smith isn't the starter yet.

RB:

Chris Henry - White isn't special, Johnson isn't a power back.

Chis Perry - yes, again

WR:

Brad Smith - Might never be a top 30 WR, but I like his all around game and I think he'll be a bigger part of the offense this year

Matt Jones - Hope springs eternal

TE:

Tony Scheffler - not quite a sleeper any more.

Jeremy Shockey - underrated, maybe more so in "shark leagues" than the mainstream

* = players on my teams I'm higher on than others would (should?) be

J. Gaffney WR NE

Gut feeling he keeps Jackson off the field in the Stallworth role, mainly due to him performing very well late in 07 even w/ Stallworth there.

Give up on Matt Jones. As far as Jake Delhomme -

Panthers coach John Fox says Jake Delhomme (Tommy John surgery) "looked very, very good" while making 30- to 40-yard throws at minicamps over the weekend.

"His arm looks stronger than it has ever looked," Fox said. Delhomme added that he's "extremely pleased" with his recovery. Delhomme participated in only individual drills at minicamp. He will join team drills during June OTAs.

qb - Jake Delhomme

rb - Rudi Johnson - I believe injuries slowed him down more than he's finished

wr - Marvin Harrison - Maybe he has enough left for one more good year

te - Mercedes Lewis - Keeps getting better, but playing for Jacksonville who doesn't feature TEs, does hurt

I'm somewhat glad to hear he's recovering well, but I still don't expect him to play all 16 games even if he is playing well in camp.Obviously Delhomme will be the starter when he's healthy, so if we have to wait a little while on Moore, that's ok.

The lack of drafting another QB despite their starter having TJ surgery is a good sign of their take on Moore.

Don't be stealin' my draft board, or we can take it outside!

WR Drew Bennett - Really bad year in 2007, but has put up good numbers in the past. Now the starting WR opposite of Tory Holt with Isaac Bruce gone. Al Saunders brought in as the new offensive coordinator should open the offense more(no more boring two tight end crap). Rams had some major injuries last year(Bulger, Jackson, Pace, Incognito), and if healthy the offense should be better all around. He is probably a guy who will fall very far, and you may get 800 yards and 8 TDs out of.

TE Greg Olsen - Olsen was a first round pick of the Bears last year. People laugh at the Bears, but forget that they were in the Super Bowl just two years ago(with Rex Grossman at QB). Olsen is a guy who I think should look to take the next step in this offense, and be a focal point of the passing game. I see him around 600 yards and 6 TDs at least.

WR Bryant Johnson - A first round pick in 2003 who was injured as a rookie, and was out shined by 2nd round pick Anquan Boldin. Then in 2004 Dennis Green could not resist the kid he mentored in Minnesota Super Star WR Larry Fitzgerald. Johnson was buried on the depth chart, and really was too big to play the slot well. Now he goes to the 49ers were he gets a 1 year prove it deal, and a real good shot of becoming the teams number 1 WR. If they can get good QB play out of Shaun Hill or if Alex Smith stays healthy and progresses he could put up big numbers. Maybe 1,000 and 8-10 TDs.

QB Matt Leinart - A high draft pick who has dealt with injuries, inconsistency, and criticism for off the field activities could break out this year. For the first time he comes into the season without a brand new playbook, and he does have two of the best receiving options in the NFL. Take a shot with him in a late round, and you may find yourself a gem. Just in case he flops grab Kurt Warner too, because he played great last year.

I would go 100% the opposite. Jackson has far better skills across the board and IMO the Pats don't view Gaffney as an every down player. I expect Jackson to put up numbers similar to Stallworth last year.

QB -

david garrard - not really a sleeper, but could be undervalued... his second half split projected close to a top 5 QB in some scoring systems, he is capable of adding valuable rushing points, & free agent WR jerry porter should be the most dynamic WR he has worked with... their running game takes a lot of pressure off...

kurt warner - makes a great handcuff with leinart... 21 TDs in his last 8 games...

RB -

julius jones - his talent has been questioned, but it seems like he is in a really good situation... SEA added OG wahle & OL coach mike solari... NFC west not filled with defensive juggernauts...

jonathan stewart - adrian peterson was undervalued due to incumbent chester taylor... while there is a question about how stewart & williams will divide the work load, williams is not as accomplished as taylor... stewart's imposing size/speed/athleticism combo make him a stepen davis clone... hurney & fox are on the hot seat, & will play the RB with the most talent that gives them the best opportunity to win... that RB is stewart...

matt forte... could be starting by sept/oct... not a burner but not slow, either (4.4-4.5), has an impressive combo of size (6'2" 220) and running skills... good instincts, vision, patience & cutting ability all bode well for a young RB...

WR -

donte stallworth - kind of forgotten after being underused in NE... with emerging star braylon edwards & KW, he will never be double covered, & still has the explosive speed to get separation... seems like he has been in the league a while and a chronic underachiever, but he came out early & is just 27, may be in the best position to succeed in his career, & IF he can stay healthy, could have some surprising upside...

TE -

john carlson - frank coyle's #1 rookie TE prospect, the best receiving/blocking combo of the top prospects at the position, should easily be the best TE in the holmgren era (a perennial Achilles heel), the WR corp is depleted with branch starting the season on PUP list & hackett departing to CAR... could be targeted early & often...

Not sure how I come down on this, Gaffney was highly touted coming out of college, was a bumb in Houston and showed a little something last year. From ROTOWORLD

"Patriots beat reporter John Tomase calls Jabar Gaffney an "entrenched starter" heading to the coming season.

Tomase says Chad Jackson and Kelley Washington will vie for fourth WR duties, with the loser possibly being inactive on game days. Washington likely has the edge due to his special teams value. Jackson should still get a long look in the pre-season. He's much more physically gifted than Gaffney."

Wishing for Jackson to take the field and having it actually happen are two entirely different things. Being physically gifted..... well that don't mean crap as a WR if your not on the field. Experience and Football Smarts are a lot more valuable.

So I would think the sleeper is Jackson, at this point Gaffney is a starter.

QB - Eli - while he isnt a "sleeper" per say, he's a guy you can target at a late QB1 and get better than advertised production this year. Improved running game with Jacobs/Bradshaw combo. SHockey should be healthy and Steve SMith/Plax/Mario/Toomer is a great top 4 WR.

RB - For some reason I like Julius Jones to have a revival in Seattle.

WR - Donte Stallworth/Nate Burleson - Donte will be used in Cleveland way more than in NE and you can grab him late. Nate should be starting at WR2 for Seattle with Branch on the mend.

TE - Anthony Fasano Miami - A parcells pick from his Dallas days, I suspect Bill grabbed him to be the Witten on this O for the fish

Tomase has been SO ACCURATE in his reporting of late . . .I agree with Paris. Jackson has way more upside potential than Gaffney does, even if at this point it looks like Gaffney will be the "starter."

Some new names, to start discussion, sleepers relative to where they are currently in the conventional wisdom:

QB: Eli Manning. Okay, he threw four interceptions to Minnessota in November. But since then the lights came on. I'm not saying its a lock, but Manning finishing in the QB3-6 range is about as unlikely as his being the Super Bowl MVP and upsetting the 17-0 Pats. Think about it: would you really be that surprised if he finished ahead of his brother? They've got some good young WRs on that team, too.

RB: Lawrence Maroney. What if Brady gets blitzed 75% of the time on first and second down? They start pitching it to the RB in the flat, running draws, and running more generally. Maroney was 22-122-1 and 25-122-1 vs JAX and SD respectively in weeks 19 and 20. Yikes! No one is drafting him in the first round anymore, but he might finish in the top 10: imagine if he started getting some of the third down passes that currently go to Kevin Faulk, who will be 32 years old this year.

WR: (I know I said new names, but Bryant Johnson is the man here. Mike Martz + bad team + talented WR1 = big receiver numbers.) I'll throw in Troy Williamson here. Somebody has to. It is possible that the problem the last years with not with Williamson but with his QBs, and he'll finally be that legit #1 WR that Jacksonville's been searching for. Kids got talent.

People can pick/draft whomever they want, but the signs are out there that Maroney will not be used any different than in his other two seasons. And NE is not done looking/adding RBs, so don't be surprised if Maroney is a disappointment again this year. Everyone is "imagining" a lot with Maroney, but the practical matter is that NE has not acted on other people's imaginations.

Dude. You couldn't be more wrong. The only talent he has is that he's fast. Other than that, he catches the ball like it's a flying, rabid wolverine.

agreed and Let's stop with the Mike Walker stuff people dude wont be on the field this year and even if he was, that Logjam is nasty

How about Bobby Wade? What is the word out of Minny?
Not much word, but with the signing of Berrian and the way that Sidney Rice came on last year (as did Aundrae Allison) Wade will be the #3 option for sure, and likely won't improve much on his average numbers from last year.

One guy who his gotten zero attention is Kevin Walter. Sure he's beginning his 6th year, but he didn't play the first 3, basically 4. Last year he got 65/800/4 while Andre was pretty much out for most of the year. Jacoby Jones is the only other threat to get some balls there at this time. News about AJ having a knee scoped made me think about him.

If AJ is in the lineup, I think Walter will be an after thought. They have Jones and Andre Davis. IMO, he was last year's sleeper that will go too high this time around.

I love Aaron Rodgers. Track records of first round QBs who sit 2-3 years tends to be pretty good once they get the reigns. No reason to think he can't match Brett's 07 stats.

Sammy Morris will probably go much, much later than Maroney and put up very similar numbers.

Like Olsen a lot in Chicago, but my guess is he'll be a trendy sleeper and not end up representing much value end of August.

Greg Olsen !!! He is the greatest reciever the Bears have this season and IMO is really involved. I wouldn't be shokced with a 60 - 900 - 8 season.

Sammy Morris will probably go much, much later than Maroney and put up very similar numbers.
:goodposting: He'll also vulture most of the goalline TD carries. On a separate note, I don't think some of the high-profile players listed in this thread can be considered "sleepers".

L.J. Smith: Dude was a stud in the making before his injury, according to most FF prognosticators. I can't figure out why he's been all but written off now that he's healthy again.

Sammy Morris: He was splitting time with Maroney last year, and many felt OUT-PLAYING him before he got hurt. Right now, he's going in the RB50 area. Nothing but upside from there...and a lot of it.

Earnest Wilford: Miami is paying him to be their #1. He may not be a true #1, but he'll get plenty of opportunity to prove us wrong, and the opportunity alone should get him higher numbers then his draft slot.

Rudi Johnson - Why can't he return to form? He had one bad season where he was plagued by injury. Combined with TJ & Chad soap operas, I could see Cincy getting back to basics and running the ball quite a bit. Plus, Rudi always got the ball at the goalline.

Randy McMichael - Spent alot of time blocking last year when the O-Line crumbled and now Al Saunders is his coordinator, a guy who leveraged Tony Gonzalez and Chris Cooley quite well. I think he has his best season yet and re-emerges as a viable TE#1

Matt Schaub - While his TD production needs to improve significantly, his Completion % and YPA figures were very good for a 1st year starter. Plus, he seemed to excel at getting his #1 WR the ball. If they can spend more time on the field together in 2008, the Texans could surprise.

I will play this game although I think my list looks more like a steals list than sleepers list.....

Offense

QB- D. Anderson..... (in dynasty) Any time you can get a 24 year old probowl QB coming off a year where he threw 29 TD's as a borderline qb 1 you should be happy.

RB- Leon Washignton..... This guy is the most dangerous player on his team with the ball in his hands and reminds a lot of Tiki Barber. He has a much improved offensive line and a 30 year old RB playing in front of him. This could be RBBC before seasons end and Leon could have an impact in fantasy not only for this season but for the future as well seeing as he is still 25.

WR-Nate Burleson.... A 27 year old WR entering his prime and is in a perfect situation to perform now. He definitely has his flaws, but anytime you can draft a fantasy player as a WR 4 that already has a 1000 yard season to his name and 2 out of his 5 years in the NFL he has at least 9 td receptions you should be happy. He plays in a pass happy offense and his team teams starting RB this season is Julius Jones.

TE-L.J Smith....Many people have written him off yet the Eagles just franchised him and he appears to be healthy. There is rumblings that for the Eagles red zone to be better they need LJ Smith healthy. TE 8 last year Heath Miller had 47 receptions out of the te spot. In Smith's previous 2 years he had 50 and 61 receptions respectively for a TE 11 finish and a TE 8 finish.

Defense

LB- Justin Durant was LB 23 over the last 6 weeks of the NFL season last year and should win a starting role this year. This kid is a difference maker and Del Rio will unleash this play maker.

DE/DT- Jovan Haye DE's dominate this position but Haye the top scoring DT last season finished as the 14th best fantasy scorer out of the DE/DT position. He is only 25 year old as well.

DB/S- Cortland Finnegan... This guy gets a lot of tackles (95) last season and welcomed his role as the starter last year. He appears to be a solid DB and started all 16 games last season, nice work for a 24 year old corner. If he can add some int's to his game he will be fantasy gold. He only had one pick last year.

He is only 25 year old as well.DB/S- Cortland Finnegan... This guy gets a lot of tackles (95) last season and welcomed his role as the starter last year. He appears to be a solid DB and started all 16 games last season, nice work for a 24 year old corner. If he can add some int's to his game he will be fantasy gold. He only had one pick last year.
You do know you can pick players not on your team, right? LOL

I will play this game although I think my list looks more like a steals list than sleepers list.....OffenseQB- D. Anderson..... (in dynasty) Any time you can get a 24 year old probowl QB coming off a year where he threw 29 TD's as a borderline qb 1 you should be happy.RB- Leon Washignton..... This guy is the most dangerous player on his team with the ball in his hands and reminds a lot of Tiki Barber. He has a much improved offensive line and a 30 year old RB playing in front of him. This could be RBBC before seasons end and Leon could have an impact in fantasy not only for this season but for the future as well seeing as he is still 25.WR-Nate Burleson.... Ha ha of course I could, however, it was a lot more fun observing my roster to see who would slip in drafts and be bargains. I would be more then willing to do your roster too for the right price

Dude. You couldn't be more wrong. The only talent he has is that he's fast. Other than that, he catches the ball like it's a flying, rabid wolverine.
:goodposting: sigworthy

Not to flame...but posting your sleepers would then defeat the purpose of sleepers would it not? :2cents:

Maybe I should get a new online user name....too many leaguemates scour this board. LOL

It did cross my mind.

Antonio Bryant.

--Guy has all the talent in the world

--TB didn't draft a WR

--is competing with Mikey Clayton (sic) and Ike Hilliard (3rd down slot WR) for the starting spot opposite Grandpa Galloway

--experienced in The Garcia offense

You can probably pick him up off waivers in most leagues.
