Lets talk about Greg Jennings (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Week one saw Jennings with 6 targets and 1 catch for 5 yards (Driver was targeted 11 times - 7rec for 96yds) at home against the stout Chicago defense.

Week 2 saw Jennings with 12 targets and 6 catches for 67yds and a TD (Driver was targeted 10 times - 8rec for 153yds) at home against New Orleans.

This week they go to Detroit, where Favre is famous for having not-so-great games.

The fact that Jennings was actually targeted more than Driver last week shows that Favre has some confidence in the rookie (perhaps not wanting to throw all the time into the double coverage that Driver gets), even though he only caught 50% of the passes his way...I dont know how many were bad or uncatchable balls, or if he had any drops...Furgeson has been targeted 9 times on the season so far, and the tight end trio of Martin, Franks and Lee have a combined 16 targets.

Point being that only 2 WRs in the NFL had more targets than Jennings last week - Galloway (17) and Holt (13). Jennings had as many targets as Chad Johnson, Coles, M Jones, Toomer, and Reggie Williams.

Favre will be inconsistant this year as he has shown lately, but when hes on his game, his WR2 is usually a good play (not counting last year when Walker went down, Green was hurt and they had no true WR2 to speak of). If Favre ends up with around 22-26tds this year (Im assuming a slight bump in TDs due to the fact that they have Green back, and came into the season prepared to work with what they have unlike last year when they were improvising the whole year), Jennings should have his share of those (Drivers career high is 9 which he did twice - in 2002 and 2004).

If Driver gets, say, 9 TDs this year, that would leave 13-16 TDs for other players (or more if Favre can get some of his form back). In 2005, Favre threw 20 TD passes - RBs had 2 TD receptions, WRs had 12, and TEs had 6. This year I could see the GB TEs getting maybe 5, RBs maybe 3, Driver 9ish, leaving 5-9 TDs going elsewhere (not counting the TDs he will throw to opposing teams). I think Jennings could snag 5-6, with Furgeson grabbing the leftover few. Yardage is another thing altogether and is harder to predict, but the 500-750 range seems attainable.

Im wondering what others are expecting for Favres rookie WR2 this year. I know he will be inconsistant being a rookie and all, but I think he could be a good play when the matchup is right. With Driver getting most of the attention from the defense, Jennings could be a nice WR3 this season when the matchup looks good, IMO.

What say you?

Jennings looks smooth as silk for a rookie and is a viable WR3 in leagues that start 3.

I like what I have seen. And he obviously makes a solid start most weeks if he continues at this pace.

I think Jennings is a great start this weekend. The Lions' Kennoy Kennedy is out so there will be some rookie covering Jennings. Favre will exploit this matchup as much as possible.

Im thinking this week could be good for Jennings as well. All the talk of the early waiver wire WRs is about Cotch and Colston, but both have tough matchups this week and both have scored 2 weeks in a row. I just dont see either of them scoring in 3 straight games, although New Orleans will be FIRED UP for their MNF home opener and could play Atlanta tough. Jennings could be a sneaky play this week.

Two defensive starters will not play Sunday against the Packers: S Kenoy Kennedy (left foot) and LB Alex Lewis (left knee). Kennedy will miss at least one game, and Lewis is out for two to three weeks, HC Rod Marinelli said. Rookie S Daniel Bullocks will take Kennedy's place, and the linebackers will be shuffled to replace Lewis. LB Paris Lenon will move from the middle to the strong side, LB Boss Bailey will make his first start in the middle, and rookie LB Ernie Sims will stay on the weak side.from the FBG blogger

I'm starting him rather than Steve Smith at this point. I could still waffle between now and Sunday, but I like the matchup. Detroit's pass defense has been horrendous (they're allowing a completion rate of 79.3% so far!!!) and they'll have a backup safety playing on top of that. Favre clearly has trust in the guy. The only worry is that Detroit's offense will be so bad that the Packers will run the ball a lot.

Well the good news for the Lions is that Green Bay's defense will be the worst theyve faced yet, so theres hope.

Isn't Koren Robinson supposed to get some time at WR this week. Thought I read somewhere that he would see WR action instead of just returning kicks. Could have some effect on Jennings but probably more on Furgeson.

I am starting Jennings at third receiver since Matt Jones is injured. Jennings seems like he could be a nice sleeper. Brett Farve still likes to throw the long ball aznd Jennings is a burner. Don't be surprised if his stats after one quarter 1 catch 75 yards and a touchdown.

Green being out has me a bit gunshy on starting Jennings today. But the injuries on the Lions D still has me waffling....

UGH! I hate making these decisions!

Green being out
Green's not out. He's starting. On topic, I'd view Jennings as an upside play at WR3 this week. He's talented; he's earning Favre's trust and I think this is another game where the Packers will have to throw the ball quite a bit to have a chance.

Do you think Jennings is a better play then Chirs Henry? Henry has so much upside but TJ is coming back this week. Damn, it's almost kickoff time. I'm sticking w/ Henry.

Greg Jennings, 75 Yd pass from Brett Favre (Dave Rayner kick is good), 7:03. Drive: 3 plays, 80 yards in 1:37.

ANyone have any insight to Jennings when he played in college??
sorry - he went to WMU
Also from Kalamazoo (130 Miles from Detroit). I'm sure he has a lot of friends/family at the game.
Here's what I wrote on him back in Feb. (kind of funny that he's again on a terrible team putting up big numbers):Jennings is a guy to keep an eye on. He played for Western Michigan and is flying under the radar right now. He played on a terrible team but put up prolific numbers:

Follwing the 2004 season he was named to the All-MAC First Team. In 2003 he was named to the All-MAC Second Team. He was selected at the Broncos MVP last year and was a team captain for the season. Currently he owns three letters and will be looking to earn his fourth this season. In the Broncos record books you will find Greg's name there several times. Currently he sits in 3rd and 4th place in receiving yards in a season with 1,092 last year and 1,050 in 2003. He is also 3rd in career receiving yards with 2,280 he only needs 1,390 yards to tie Steve Neal (1997-2000) for the most career yards receiving. Greg also sits 2nd in career touchdown receptions with 25 needing just 2 to tie Steve Neal and 3 to set a new record at WMU. Greg owns the top spot and is tied for second with Steve Neal with touchdown catches in a season. In 2003 Greg set the new mark at 14 and tied the old mark of 11 last year. Greg is also tied with Neal and 2 others with touchdown catches in a game with 3. He caught his three in one game against arch rival Central Michigan in 2003. In all purpose yards in a season he sits 2nd behind Shawn Faulkner (1983), Greg had 1,734 yards in 2003 and Faulkner posted 1,889. In a game Greg's 279 all purpose yards against UConn in 2003 moved him into a tie for 3rd with Lovell Coleman (1958), Tony Knox (1996) set the standard against West Virginia with 330 yards. Greg's 93 yard punt return for a touchdown against Northern Illinois last season gave him the 3rd longest punt return in school history. His 31 kickoff returns in 2003 put him 3rd on the all-time list for punt returns in a season. In 2003 he racked up 669 kickoff return yards which put him 4th in school history for yards in a season. Greg started all 11 games last season. He currently owns a 23-game reception streak. He had 5 100-yard receiving games, he owns 11 career 100-yard games, 2 punt returns for touchdowns, back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons making him only the second Bronco ever to achieve that feat. In the MAC he ranked 3rd in receiving yards and punt return average, 6th in receptions, 8th in all-purpose yards and tied for 9th in scoring. His most memorable catch in his career came at arch rival Central Michigan when he made a spectacular one handed grab, reversed his direction and ran to the end zone to complete a 79-yard touchdown pass play. Monkey, you are a sick monkey.Come back in for a curtain call. :jawdrop:

:towelwave:

I had him pegged as a ROY candidate in August.

Lucky guess? Probably.
Don't look now but the Packers could have the OROY and DROY this season. That's not homerism either, both are playing outstanding football and look like veterans. Both Hawk and Jennings are improving each game. Just too bad the rest of the Packers' squad is light years away from where they need to be.

Well, I would hardly call that a long ball from Favre...plus if the ref calls the downfield holding on Bly, this goes down as a blip on the stat sheet.

Started CJ over Jennings because I was up against the team w/Carson Palmer. Boy, did that backfire. Still got the win though.

How many points are leagues taking off these days for uncalled penalties?

its early, but if he continues this torrid pace (& stays healthy), he could have one of the statistically best seasons for a rookie WR ever... OTOH, the TD sunday was result of bad tackle... he could easily have been 3 - 50 with no TD...

it looks like GB isn't running ball as well as they used to, are giving up a lot of points & may need to throw a lot all year to stay in games, & he clearly has trust & confidence of favre early on... these all bode very well for his 06 season... it will be tough to beat bush, but through three games, bush, jennings & demeco ryans look like three best rookies (& arguably maroney... cutler & leinart look like they excel, too, once given opportunity, based on hos advanced they looked in pre-season)...

the thing that has impressed me the most in early going is he is a very explosive open field runner...

EXACTLY, all of you who are creaming your pants over yesterday, that TD could have possibly been the worst job of tackling ever. Start hin next week against Philly and you'll see exactly what you have.

Last time I checked they still allow TD's on bad tackling. With Favre throwing 40/50 times a game this kid is going to get his catches. Plus they play Lions again a home, so maybe he get another "worst tackling td" :banned:

Al Harris is already on record as saying that Jennings has the potential to be the teams #1 Wr by next year with no dissrespect toward Driver simply because the kid is that good. Driver lacks the talent of the elite Wr's but he is far and above one of the most professional and hardwest working Wr's playing tha game today. Solid top 10-15 Wr. Jennings should hit 1,000 yds with 6-9 tds this year as a legit #2Wr IMO.
