Let's Talk Penn State Football (1 Viewer)

Happy for the former players that the wins are back. Vacated wins are stupid anyway, but something like this that is not a true "cheating" episode like a UNC makes it even more dumb. One of my "buttons" during this has always been the idea that by hiding it they did better on the field. Moronic, and the more ridiculous part was taking the wins back to 1998. They did nothing wrong in the 1998 incident (cops involved, DA involved, Child services involved) unless you think they paid off the DA to drop charges. The scuttlebutt when this came down was that they went back to 1998 just so Paterno's last "NCAA win" was in November 1997 with McQueary as the QB.

The second thing about this that bothered me, and still does, is the BS idea that Penn State as a whole (fans, alumni, players, etc) were responsible for this because of the "culture" or some bull#### like that. Ridiculous. Every top football or basketball school has a rabid fanbase that would react the same way. Heck, #FSUTwitter proved that during Winston's career, albeit with less serious accusations. Replace Paterno with Bowden and Jerry Sandusky with Mickey Andrews and the fanbase reaction would be the same. Paterno got a statue after almost 50 years. Saban has one after 10. And have you ever argued with Kentucky Big Blue fans? Come on.

I used to just get angry and lash out, but I recently decided that taking away my business from people who imply that is a better idea. Of course, most people who do that are nameless internet trolls. But recently a writer for a website I pay for implied that Penn State supports child molestation so I cancelled my subscription to that site. Small potatoes, I know. But it made me feel better than just telling the guy to #### off.

As far as the statue, I really don't give a crap. The biggest problem with most Penn Staters is that they think they can magically restore Paterno's reputation with the common person out there. They can't. Give it up. If the common people ever changes their mind, great. Otherwise, stop worrying about what other people think and know that you have respect for the life and career of Joe Paterno.

Sorry for the soapbox. Take care.

I can't like this post enough. Well said.

Damn :goodposting:

The defense looks really fast early on. The offense seems a little too conservative, but I understand not wanting to show everything in the first quarter against Temple.

This offensive play calling is absolutely abyssmal. All you heard about all off-season is the WRs, yet Hackenberg has thrown one pass over 15 yards. This is not the fault of the OL. Temple is seeing the same formation over and over, and is teeing off.

If Hackenberg sat out the rest of the season and just declared for the draft I wouldn't blame him.

He might die behind that line.

I'll always be appreciative of Hack for sticking through all the turmoil, but he looks lost out there. Sort of reminds me of what happened to David Carr who had all the promise in the world go to waste in Houston.

Right now, the rest of the offense is not doing him any favors, and he's not exactly doing much to help himself or the team either.

I would like to have seen them give McSorley a series or two today to see if he fared just as poorly.

On the plus side, I was at the 6-4 Iowa game. As bad as this was today, that felt even worse. I thought our special teams played relatively well today. It was nice to see something other than a fair catch on every punt, and Farmer looked pretty good on kickoff returns. So at least there is that.

So...honestly...let's say this season plays out as badly as the Temple game did...Hack is a true Junior. If you're him, what do you do? I have to feel like there is some part of him that would consider a transfer to, say, Delaware, to try and get 1 year where he can actually make a throw and not run for his life. It worked for Flacco after Pittsburgh. Pat Devlin of PSU got drafted by the Dolphins after going this route too...Hack is probably better than he's been playing. I can't envision him sticking around for his senior year if he spends most of his junior year on his back...

Let's face it...if you're giving up sacks against Temple 2-man rushes, the odds of your QB surviving the season are slim.

Nah. He goes to the draft and shows off at Pro Day and the Combine. Scouts are already salivating over him amd they know what he can do. They're too smart to let his surroundings influence his draft position. They can see through the crap.

Of course, that's assuming he survives this season.

I give the kid (Hack) all the credit in the world.

He came back when O'Brien left after his first year.

He came back after going through a year in Donovan's offense last year.

I can't imagine why he would come back after another season of this.

I have heard that he is on pace to graduate in 3 years if he wants to. Which might open a D-1 transfer (like Golson did this year to FSU).

So I guess it comes down to how much this year hurts his NFL standing.

But it's not just about making the throws. QBs need quality game reps in order to fully develop. That's why NFL-ready arms out of HS don't always turn into NFL QBs. He could find himself behind an above average or even excellent OL in the pros but it doesn't mean he's going to be able to diagnose the complexities of NFL defenses if he doesn't get good experience trying to do the same against college defenses.

Perhaps you're right. I just think he finishes this year and moves on to the NFL. If he survived/s last year and this year, I think a combination of not wanting to further risk injury and being soured on the college football experience push him towards a payday.

So, they won. That's good. Hard to tell how much they improved, considering that it was Buffalo. They did improve, though.

I like this Barkley kid. He seems a lot faster to the line of scrimmage than Lynch.

I follow Buffalo football very closely, and can tell you with brutal honesty that they're really not very good. They have a senior QB but are pretty thin mostly everywhere else. Most projections have them finishing 4th or 5th in the 7-team MAC East. They have a shot at a .500 season if they win some of their other non-conference games but they're really not very good.

The weather was a factor today, but IMO Penn State looked pretty terrible. Not trying to #### on you guys, I think it's good for the region when PSU is good as this is really "Big 10 country" up here and I feel like CFB is more fun here when Big 10 teams are strong. Plus Akeel Lynch is a local-ish kid, originally from Canada but went to one of my high school's rivals in the Buffalo burbs (interestingly, Pitt's starting RB is from my HS, Buffalo RBs currently dominating PA college sports). But the Penn State team I saw today was just plain bad.....I hope they turn it around and can put together a decent season though.

Agree. PSU is brutally bad right now. Franklin sure can recruit, but whether he can coach is anyone's guess.

You can definitely see the speed a lot of the young guys (Barkley, Polk, Reid) bring to the game.

Hack still seems lost, though it didn't matter Saturday.
