How did Pitt look today?
Apparently pretty bad. But my comment had nothing to do with PSUs play on the field.
What year graduate from Pitt again?
This is such a stupid argument. Do you really think that everyone in the stands of a college football game is a student or a graduate of those schools?
Of course not.

My bad. I thought you were in the camp that insists that you can't be a fan if you didn't graduate from the school.

I'm in the camp I don't why you would be a fan of a school you or your family didn't attend or work at. I thought you did attend Pitt but I was thinking of someone else. I think?

I'm a fan because my dad starting taking me to Pitt games when Tony Dorsett was there. My undergrad was at a D-II school so I'm still a Pitt fan. Not sure why that seems so unusual.

I just watched a PSU team make play calls on offense based on 21st century football. I would have preferred a win, but am ecstatic about this.
You seem like a nice guy, Jutz, but I don't understand why you're still displaying Joe Paterno as your avatar. Do you actually still believe that Paterno is innocent despite all the evidence that's been revealed?

http://www.fandango.com/movieblog/al-pacino-to-portray-joe-paterno-in-movie-about-penn-state-football-scandal-720531.html

Al Pacino is set to portray the late college football icon Joe Paterno in a film that will chronicle the life of a man who became the winning-est coach in college football history only to see his reputation come crashing down amid a rape scandal involving someone on his coaching staff.Deadline reports that ICM Partners will begin shopping the movie around town with Pacino's name headlining and Rick Nicita, Pacino's manager, producing.

Paterno was ultimately fired and died shortly after the scandal involving his former defensive co-ordinator Jerry Sandusky, broke. Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse against young boys and is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison.

We've seen Pacino play a fictional head coach in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday. Do you think he can pull off portraying one of the most well-known college football coaches ever?

I'm going to go ahead and predict box office bomb right now.

Agreed, for this simple reason: even if the movie is incredibly well done, who in their right mind would want to watch it? The story of an old man who enables a child abuser, dies of cancer and is found out after he dies? No thanks.

I know Hollywood makes movies off of tragedies all the time..but something about trying to profit off of this seems wrong.

In other news, I no longer hate McGloin.
That was an awesome game. Again, I know it's a loss but PSU looked great everywhere except the kicking game. I was impressed with Mcgloin. I am enjoying watching them this year more then any years in the recent past (maybe 2005?). They actualy have plays that can convert on 3rd and long now.... And they actually work! It's exciting watching a team that blitzes too. Was very rare in the past. Def fun team to watch. I think wins will come with experience.

Loved the 4th down calls and the fake punt. Happy with everything except the outcome. Really like O'Brien and how he puts it on him and his coaches instead of the kids.

Except for the blown coverage on 3rd and long and he ran onto the field past the numbers to yell at the kid.

Here's a list of transfers I've cobbled together (to the best of my knowledge):

(JR) Silas Redd - RB to USC

(JR) Anthony Fera - PK to Texas

(JR) Rob Bolden - QB to LSU (no loss there)

(JR) Khairi Fortt - LB to Cal

(True FR) Jamil Pollard - DT to Rutgers

(JR) Kevin Haplea - TE to Florida State

(Redshirt FR) Ryan Nowicki - OL to Illinois

(Redshirt FR) Tim Buckley - S to NC State

Justin Brown is thinking about transferring; his likely destination would be Oklahoma.
Other than Redd, none of these hurt the team too bad.
Oof

Yelling at the DB? That wasn't him, it was the secondary coach. O'Brien yelled at the officials twice about the play clock.

I'm not sure it's worth the audience, but if you want two facts:1) Fera's mother was diagnosed with MS this summer so he wanted to be closer to home (Texas) to make it easier to be near her. He likely would have qualified for a transfer due to family medical issue and been able to play right away even if nothing had happened at PSU.

2) Fera hurt his groin pretty badly in the spring and still isn't practicing or playing for Texas. So even had he stayed at Penn State, he wouldn't have been playing for PSU today unless you think his groin would have gotten better quicker at PSU than at Texas.

3) :excited:

Two thoughts:

1) That kicker must really appreciate that O'Brien put the names on the jerseys now, especially since yahoo used it as their sports front page photo.

2) Um, so if there's going to be a movie about Paterno, what actor will fortunate enough to get "Jerry Sandusky" on their acting resume?

If you don't condemn it you condone it.DB coach would be suspended if that was my staff. Yelling at kids is ok. Showing them up like that is bush league.

Interesting and sad story about the kicker.

Just talked to a guy at church who went up for the game. He got in to the stands right when the gates opened at 10am and there were only 3 other people in the PSU section, near the front of the section. Right then a kid came out of the tunnel on the field wearing a PSU football shirt. He came over to the section and said that he was glad to see him parents and grandmother made it to the game. They wished him luck and he went back into the locker room. The guy started talking to the family and asked which player they were cheering for. Of course they said Number 97, the kicker. They proceeded to share the fact that he kicked in high school but didn't play football at all last season, playing soccer instead. But when Fera left and Coach O'Brien asked for volunteers with kicking experience, he walked on and was given a scholarship. His family was so excited and proud of him, that they took out a HELOC on their mortgage and bought airline tickets and game tickets for every game.

Brutal. Guy said he never prays for sports but couldn't help pray that Ficken made that last kick. Then the skies opened up and it started pouring right before he kicked.

Hope he gets another chance if he can turn it around. He had the leg it seemed, just not the accuracy.

 Ficken was the backup kicker for PSU last year (he played in 4 games and had 3 kick attempts). If your guy at church got such an obvious part of the story wrong, then I have to question the more detailed parts (using a HELOC to buy tickets, etc.)

I guess. That's just what he told me. Didn't fact check it. Would be happy to hear it's not true actually.

Does anybody need a parking pass for the Temple game?? I have one, but won't use it because I am staying at the Penn Stater and they have a shuttle.

Face value.

Really like what O'Brien is doing here but I think going for it there was a mistake. 25 yard field goal, middle of the field. Give Ficken a chance to get his confidence back. By going for it you kill his confidence. Might as well pick up another PK for next week.

I have not liked anything O'Brien has done. Both losses are squarely on him.

Not really in the mood to argue but I disagree. Very happy with him. We certainly could have done a lot worse with a coach all things considered. Happy to see the team get a win.

I know Navy isn't good... but man I love watching PSU so much this year. The bomb to start the game was awesome. Paul Jones getting catches at TE. Running Zordich in a single back formation, and it working. I think O'Brien should have let the kid kick too, but it's not a big deal to me. I love everything he has done so far. So many true or redshirt freshmen playing this year. I hope they stay together, can't wait to see how they progress. And that Bench dude looked pretty good in the few snaps he got last week.

Team looked great again against IL. Interesting to see how many different RB's are contributing this year: Belton, Day, Zordich, and Zwinak. Same with the TE position. Kinda remins you of a certian pro football team from the New England area. Very curious to see how they do against Northwestern. So far they haven't played any really good teams, but they keep getting better each week.
