Let's Talk Penn State Football (7 Viewers)

These Paterno guys are gonna ruin Penn State football
I think its just about a coach who cares about and is loyal to psu. There's a lot of penn state pride.
Most people are loyal to money and a better job. It's highly unlikely you ever have a head coach for 10 years, much less 40 or whatever Paterno stayed for.
The point is I and a lot of others think there are coaches out there who look at penn state as their top job and believe it is about more than just football and money. Not gruden and those super top sought after coaches, but certain guys that may be better fits overall and turn out to be damn good coaches and recruiters in their own right.
:goodposting: ... and it's an understandably difficult thing for folks to understand, who aren't alumni themselves...

...and there's nothing wrong with that.
O'Brien might still be the coach if the nutjob Paterno supporters weren't nutjobs. Justify it how you want.

Got something to justify that, chief?

“You can print this: You can print that I don’t really give a ---- what the ‘Paterno people’ think about what I do with this program. I’ve done everything I can to show respect to Coach Paterno. Everything in my power. So I could really care less about what the Paterno faction of people, or whatever you call them, think about what I do with the program. I’m tired of it.

“For any ‘Paterno person’ to have any objection to what I’m doing, it makes me wanna put my fist through this windshield right now.”
Somewhere during that rant, O’Brien dropped an even bigger bombshell.

“That’s why, in probably about a month, they’re gonna be ----ing looking for a new coach.”
I think he leaves for the Texans job regardless...it's a great NFL opening but did it make it easier...most likely.

I don't want a coach who uses "could care less" anyway.

Some NFL teams won't let head coaches pick all their coordinators either. Haven't the Browns already hired a DC without a new HC? Happens fairly often.

I think O'Brien has a bit of an anger issue.

from what I have heard, Jay Paterno is the problem.. the vast majority of alumni have welcomed and supported BOB.. but there are a few big time donors who side with Jay and the 'family'.. a shame.. wish we could have had O'Brien at least one more year, but I knew he was destined for the NFL

I'm not sure what siding with Jay would do...are they withholding support, and if so, why? It's not like Jay has a snowball's chance in Hades of getting the job. Jay's more likely to run for Congress.

its more about clearing the family name and the vacated win stuff.. makes no sense to me either

Seems like the Golden rumors are picking up steam.

Interesting because he's recruiting very well down there but Miami fans seem to want him out anyway.

I read on twitter earlier that Franklin is interviewing on Sunday.

NOOOOO!!! Stay at Vanderbilt!

Miami fans are pissed off that he won't get rid of his best friend who is the DC. The defense has been historically bad the past 2 seasons and aren't showing much progress. They are also very disappointed in what was on the field at the Russell Athletic Bowl. Couple that with the quick turnarounds that other HCs seem to get and they are starting to get antsy that Golden is not the right guy.

Yeah I heard the same thing about D'Onofrio.

I think a big question is what happens to Larry Johnson if he doesn't get the job? Does he stay as DL coach, DC, or is he gone? Does that LB coach that BOB canned come back? Does LJ's decision depend on which guy is HC? I'd hate to see him go.

I would expect Munchk or Golden to retain LJ. Franklin would probably have to be pressured into doing so. I would love to see Vanderlinden back. However, if might be tough as PSU didn't admit BOB fired him.

CaneSport @CaneSport
CaneSport has confirmed that Al Golden has been offered the head coaching job at Penn State. While expected to take it, no word yet from Al
This is the same guy that confirmed Gruden was taking the job last time. Most of the time he's just flinging crap at the wall to see what sticks so he can be the "first" to report it.

Franklin knows the DC metro/Virginia Beach recruiting scene quite well making him a natural fit. He's also from Pennsylvania which certainly helps, and grew up when Penn State was a powerhouse. I think I'd want this job before Texas, seems like you'd have some leeway in establishing your program goals with less outside interference. I think Mora might be able to handle the pressures at Texas, not sure about Franklin and Strong.

Really glad that it looks like Munchak and Schiano are off the table.

Holding out hope for Franklin but expecting Golden.

It sounds like if Franklin is the guy, the current recruiting class will stay committed. If not, it looks like at least the QB is gone.

Being from PA, maybe he reveres PSU?
I would guess Franklin loses more than a few recruits. He would keep O'Conner, but that isn't really that big a deal unless Hack bolts. LJ would probably do the best job of keeping the class and current players in the fold.

I haven't seen Munchak was off the table.
It looks like he's staying in Tennessee.
He didn't get fired, but he could certainly still decide to leave. I expect he would if offered the PSU job.
ESPN is reporting no decision and if he is back it is as a lame duck.

Why would Golden leave Miami?
I know the term is thrown around far too often but PSU is truly "dream job" status for Golden.
Gotcha. Can you tell me why? I have no idea on the background. Seems like Miami and Penn State are similar jobs with similar current situations. At Miami you have that fertile recruiting ground, Penn State has the on-campus facilities. Seems like a wash.

Golden grew up in Jersey and played for Penn State. Career wise I still wouldn't leave Miami to inherit that mess at Penn State.

I think he was a captain when he played and he also was an assistant coach in 2000 I think.

Check your comment above I bolded. Golden doesn't care what you think.

Did I say Golden cares what I think? I think most might agree Miami is a better job right now with Penn State still under child rape sanctions for two more years and the access to talent one has at Miami. It's just an opinion though. A couple of you are some really sensitive butt hurt fans. Do you always have to be told how pretty you are?

:lmao: I push back on your trolling and you bust out the insults. Nice try, brah.

Saying I wouldn't leave Miami for Penn State is trolling? Are you 13 and female? Seriously, sorry that hurt your feelings

Anyone familiar with Sekrah Sports? Their Twitter is blowing up that Golden is in State College and the final deals of the contract are being ironed out.

I've never heard of them, so I have no idea as to their validity.

Isn't franklin interviewing tomorrow?
That's my understanding. Maybe something changed. I have no clue. Thus site may be complete bull. All of this is why I asked if anyone was familiar with them.

Its possible that with the Browns and another team asking to interview franklin as well that psu decided not to get involved with him.

That thought also crossed my mind.

In the back of my mind I'm thinking I heard it was a BS site, run by someone named Harkes.

@AdamSchefter: As @mortreport reported, former Titans HC Mike Munchak will interview today for the Penn State HC job.

@mortreport: Miik Munchak is scheduled to interview today with alma mater, Penn State, after turning down a hefty raise and extension offer from Titans.
