Let's Talk Penn State Football (2 Viewers)

Now did penn state decide to go another way or did Golden? I think I prefer franklin generally, but honestly munch or Larry would be good stewards of the program as well.

I would guess that Penn State didn't offer enough, knowing that they always have LJ as a fallback. I have nothing to back that up, its just my personl thought.

Zero college football experience outside of being a player. College football coaches are a lot more than X's and O's, not sure why they would want Munchak as a primary candidate.
Plus how good of a recruiter he would be is a big question mark. I wouldnt hate it if it ends up Munchak, but I think they can definitely get someone better.

Now if Munchak would come back to PSU as an OL coach or something, that would be fantastic.

IIRC earlier in this thread people were asking about the value of the football program. I saw this article recently and PSU football is ranked as the 14th most valuable program in the country. Texas, ND, Michigan, OSU, and Florida were the top 5.

I know this isn't an exact correlation to how desirable the coaching job is... but it is something I was curious about.

So it looks like the candidate list, according to the news, has been narrowed down to Franklin and Munchack. Rumors about Franklin's assistants following PSU recruits on Twitter has his name buzzing right now. I also heard that Munchack did really well in his interview. Very curious to see how it pans out.

A few side notes... just because Golden made his 'statement' that he is not a candiate for the PSU job doesn't mean he isn't still a candidate IMO. As a coach in his current postion, I don't see how he has any other option then to say he is not a candidate. I think it is the most common MO to say that as a coach, and we have seen many instances in the past where a coach says they are staying... then leaves anyway. I am also curious to see if there are any 'unknown' candidates that come out of the woods. I honestly don't recall Bill O'brien being talked about as a candidate for PSU before he was hired. could there be an unknown candidate out there that could make the leap to the top?

As others have discussed, I think Franklin would be great, but I also agree he is not a guy that would stay long. Having said that, I think it would still be good to have him. Even if he doesn't stay, it doesn't mean he can't help the program. BOB left after 2 years, but what he did to help the program though some of the most difficult times is well worth it IMO.

PSU set up an interview with Niners OC Greg Roman. I know from my Rutgers contacts that he would be interesting in coming back to college, especially back east where he's originally from.

I thought he already interviewed in Chicago on Monday? Do they usually do "second interviews" for positions like this?

Jason LaCanfora first said he was going to be interviewed, then some others (including Schefter and I think Schad) said it actually already took place.

And footballscoop.com reported that PSU was not happy with how the Franklin interview went.

@AdamSchefter: Though WASH reached out to him last week, Vanderbilt HC James Franklin has no interview planned with Redskins. Sounds like PSU or Vandy.

Conflicting reports now on whether Franklin has been formally offered the job with a decision coming today.
This is the report I heard about on the news this morning from a Scranton paper.

Two sources close to Penn State's program confirmed to The Times-Tribune late Wednesday night that Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin was offered the head coaching position during an hours-long meeting with the university's search committee in Destin, Fla. Both sources, who spoke on conditions of anonymity because no official announcement had been made, said Franklin is expected to either accept or reject the job today
I'm hoping he takes it.

Yea because they have massive restrictions for 2 more years. And the ones that they are under now are going to really hurt. So they won't be competing on a level playing field for 4 years. That's going to really hurt.
Servo, thoughts on this?
And they are moving into a division with Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan.

I'd be quite surprised if they can compete for a division crown within the next 4 years. What established coach wants to take that on?
:bye:

Yup. It sucks.

Thoughts on some of this potential baggage of Franklin? It is going to suck if/when he gets subpoenaed in that rape case and/or it's discovered he instructed the players to delete a video.

Still nothing official, right? I hope there's a huge buyout in the K.
Per Bill Persutta (sp?) of WDVE, the PSU compensation committee meets in closed session at 0830 on Saturday followed by a public session at 0900. I can only assume that there's only one person worthy of a Saturday meeting of the compensation committee...

I would assume someone academic in nature

maybe stephen hawking or bill gates or neil degrasse tyson is coming on staff

or maurlie

To no one's surprise, the Penn State Compensation Committee unanimously approved Franklin's contract this morning. 6 years, 4.5 mil. a year.

People are already beginning to call the team the "James' Gang".

I know PSU fans liked BOB a lot - but I think, at the least, Franklin is just as good.

Fantastic hire for them.

I can understand alumni complaining if they're worried about being dragged into another scandal; but any other complaint is unfounded. This is a great football hire; either he stays longterm and builds something special, or he leaves in a few years after having guided good teams through turmoil allowing even more prestige in the future.

Grinning ear to ear right now.

Was so worried that they were just going to settle for a "PSU guy".

Fantastic hire. And as noted above, even if he does bolt to the NFL in a few years, that just means that he pieced together 2-3 more good to great seasons and the PSU job is again one of the hottest on the market.

Way to go PSU!

I see very few BOB recruits de-committing with Franklin being the guy now, and an added bonus is maybe he can get some of his Vandy recruits to now head to Happy Valley.

Chris Godwin, 4-star WR who was on the fence after BOB left reaffirned his commitment this morning.

Connor, the 4-star QB who said he was delaying his January enrollment is back on campus this weekend to reconsider.

What's the buyout?
:lmao: you guys are never going to love again.
Asking contract terms isn't ok now?
IIRC its $6.5 million. Too lazy to verify.

Chance Sorrell changes from Vandy to Penn State.

I have officially opened up my recruitment and I have officially committed to Penn State University! We are...Penn State!

Considering how influential Vanderbilt OL coach Herb Hand certainly was to Sorrell's recruitment, this is as good a sign as any that he will join Franklin's staff at Penn State--he had been buzzed about as a candidate to replace him at Vandy--which is a very, very good thing for the Nittany Lions.

Lloyd Tubman commits to Penn State as well.

It took all of a couple of hours for 2 Vandy recruits to flip to the Blue and White. Good thing they're not on the schedule anytime soon.

Well, it sounds like he was overcome by the rich tradition and cultural importance of Penn State football. Attitudes like his are the main reason why we cheer for these talented amateurs.

Or he wanted to follow the coach that recruited him. Kids are funny like that.
