Let's Talk Penn State Football (3 Viewers)

Well, this was the year that everyone said the sanctions were really going to hit. I just didn't want to see it.

If there is still one silver lining to this year, it's this: It seems as though every time there is a good play, it seems as though the name of the player who made the play is accompanied with "...that was redshirt sophomore...", or "...that was true freshman...".

Just got to get through this year and things should start to look up.

So, a pretty interesting week.

NCAA internal e-mails are released, showing in-fighting and a belief that the sanctions were a bluff on the part of the NCAA:

http://onwardstate.com/2014/11/05/internal-emails-show-ncaa-questioned-jurisdiction-over-penn-state/

Then, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejects the NCAA's appeal, clearing the way for a trial to determine the legality of the sanctions:

And then last night, after having lost the gubernatorial election, Corbett backtracks on his original decision that Paterno should have been fired:

Seems as though the tide is beginning to turn a little, and the next few months in the courts should be interesting.

Two key points I found of particular interest:

- The internal emails released from the NCAA are just those that handed over. There are still 477 that the state of PA are trying to get released. If these are the emails that the NCAA voluntarily released, I wonder what is in the ones that they wont.

- It is widely believed that the Penn State BOT was divided on firing Paterno and the deciding factor was a call from then-Governor Corbett, a sitting member of the BOT at the time, making the decision that Paterno should be fired.

I'm hoping that some e-mail is discovered that resolves the confusion over whether the death penalty was really discussed/presented to Erickson at some point before the Decree was signed.

I hope JoePA gets all of wins back.
I suspect that they'll try to figure out a way to give Penn State their wins back without acknowledging them as Paterno's or tying them to the record book.

I don't know how they would accomplish that, though.
Give them to Jay.

Since this whole thing stinks - and has from the jump - it's seriously time to quit blaming JoePa for doing what he did. The idea that PSU got a recruiting advantage from allegedly covering this up is :loco:

Taking away wins is such a dumb thing. The games were played.
I don't remember the year, but there was a Penn State/Ohio State game where this overlapped with the tattoo scandal at OSU, and they have both vacated the game.

Like all the guys on the 35 or so Maryland teams that lost to JoePa over the years telephoned each other and said "Did you hear the news? We won!"

She had more to do with winning the games than Jay did.

Today's starting offensive line:

LT - redshirt freshman

LG - redshirt freshman

C - 2nd career start

RG - converted DT

RT - used to be the center

:bag:

Hackenberg creates a lot of these sacks himself. He holds onto the ball entirely too long.

ETA: ok, maybe not a lot.

You really believe this or are you fing around?
You really skeptical or are you fing around?
Yeah I'm serious. Delusional fans astound me. When you combine it with support of a coach who tacitly allowed molestation, I'm more astounded.

You people suck.
Yawn...As of today, 4 of your last 5 posts have been you making cracks about Penn State in various threads. Isn't it about time you moved past the fact that they rejected your college application and you start contributing to some threads in more meaningful ways?

Don't bother.

PSU repeating last week's abysmal offensive performance against Temple. It's tied at 3 with 2 minutes until halftime.

Ohio State fans aren't happy unless they're butthurt about something. They're actually worse than Domers.

As I said to my FIL - We might not be entertaining...we might not even be all that good, but if we're bowl eligible, the mere financial impact will guarantee us a bowl.

-Our alumni base is huge and travels well

-The announcers will have their fill of "post-sanction" stories.

-Folks will tune in just to watch PSU in a bowl game it wasn't supposed to be in...whether it's to root for them or against them.

-Even if we're bad, we're a bigger name than most of the teams that would end up at some of these bowls.

College Football Playoff if a team qualifies then:

Tier #1

Pretty much who is left standing between OSU, MSU, Wisky and Nebraska

Tier #2

Maryland, Michigan, Rutgers, PSU, Iowa and Minnesota plus one from above fighting for these three slots.

Tier #3

Of the three left from above, two get a crappy bowl and 2 get nothing.

Still a couple of weeks left, but if I had to guess we're getting a Tier 3 bowl. Delaney has to want us out there somewhere; if everything were more or less equal, I could see Rutgers and Maryland on the outside looking in because they're the newest.

Usually other conferences can't fill their slots and more spots open up. I don't see any eligible B1G team not getting one.

As much as you think Delany would want to put PSU in a bowl, seems like he's just as likely to want the new guys in one as well for the increased exposure. Especially after he took a beating for adding them in the first place.

Either way, I agree PSU has nothing to worry about...Rutgers has traveled well to bowl games but there isn't going to be much demand from the fanbase to go to Detroit the day after Christmas.

They should just put Michigan in that game if they beat Maryland this weekend. It would probably sell out the game for the first time ever.
