Nice effort by the kid. Don't understand some of the non-calls at the end there.

Need to see improvement on the oline next year

 
I guess I can sort of see the logic behind the screen passes at the end of the game, trying to get the ball in the Barklwy's hands. It still doesn't make any sense, though.

I think we will. IIRC this was the area hardest hit by the sanctions as PSU was forced to take guys they normally wouldn't take (e.g. JUCO transfers). If my chiropractor is to be believed, the 2017 team will be the one to watch.

At one point during the game the announcers alluded to the fact that after Paterno left there were nine scholarship offensive lineman. In Franklin's first year, there was one.

 
Hackenberg has declared for the draft. Thanks to him for sticking by his decision to come to Penn State and for the part he played in keeping the team relevant throughout the sanctions.

This is that type of year where I feel like we truly don't know what could happen.  It'll be interesting.  The Hackenberg era is over after three years.  The team now has a more mobile quarterback, which apparently fits better into Franklin's schemes.  This will be the first season where I think we should start to really see what Franklin's vision is.  His recruits are starting to fill in the roster.

Kent State - Win

Pitt - Win (They better f'n win)

Temple - Win

Michigan - Loss

Minnesota - Win

Maryland - Win

Ohio State - Loss

Purdue - Win

Iowa - Loss

Indiana - Win

Rutgers - Win

Michigan State - Loss

I definitely think 8-4 is reasonable.  I think they win the games they should and lose the games they should.  Nothing too exciting, but I think this year will show a lot for the future.

I'm pretty much with you here but I think PSU steals either the OSU or Michigan State game but drops another to Minny or Indiana in typical PSU fashion.

I think that as long as he makes a bowl game he gets to come back for 2017,  albeit on a very hot seat.

Not to sound like a broken record, but up until this point, he's been coaching O'Brien's recruits and the two have a very different philosophy.  It may be optimistic, but I think more than a small part of Franklin's struggles have been an effect of this.  

This is really the first year with "his team".  I think as long as he gets through at .500, he gets another chance.  If he misses a bowl, all bets are off.  If he gets through to 2017, though, he'd need to have a stellar year, or else he's gone after that.

James, when you're breaking in a new signal-caller, and have a RB who could contend for the Heisman before his career is over, whaddayasay we use the brute force method to rack up a 40-50 point win over a team we should beat by 40=50 points. Oh, what do I know...

Is there a scenario where we could keep Franklin as a recruiter, and hire a HC who knows what to do with a lead, and how to manage the clock?

Yeah, let's wait until Michigan to have the QB pressed to do something.  No pressure there

 
[SIZE=14.666666666666666px]I thought it was fine.  It was a little bland, but it was only Kent State with Pitt and Michigan coming up in the next few weeks.  No reason to show all the cards yesterday.  It was also a new offense, new coordinators, new quarterback, and they lost three DLs to the draft.  You can say they had all off-season to prepare, but this was the first time that they faced another team.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=14.666666666666666px]The defense only gave up six points on two early field goals.  McSorley seemed to run the read option well and made the right decisions.  He has good zip on the ball to the sidelines.  Godwin is going to be a great target, and Barkley is Barkley.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=14.666666666666666px]If you have a long memory of Penn State football, yesterday’s game may have been disappointing.  This is a team that PSU would have hung fifty or sixty points on.  Considering recent history, though, this is the best opening game in five years.  I’ll take it.  Maybe I’m being overly optimistic and I won’t blame anyone if they call me that.  I was happy with it.[/SIZE]

 
While disappointing to lose (especially to Pitt), there are some things to be encouraged about:

  1. The offense looks capable of scoring more than 20ish points for the first time in years
  2. The coaches actually seem to be making effective halftime adjustments unlike the past couple of years
  3. We seem to have a real punter for the first time in forever who is capable of changing field position in an instant
To give up over 300 yards rushing, turn the ball over 4x, and give up a long kickoff return that led to an easy, late touchdown and still have the chance to win the game on the road  in the final two minutes against a P5 school is something the team can learn from and build on.

On to Temple (and some payback)

You think? I think McSorley played just fine.  He seems to throw the ball well amd has pretty good accuracy.

This was his second start, in a road game against a major rival.  You could definitely see the jitters and that last pass was a bad decision, but I like him.
