Let's Talk Penn State Football (5 Viewers)

Saw the Michigan and Ohio State threads bumped recently.  Can't have that.

#6 with the consesus seeming to be that the Penn State-Ohio State game will be the de facto Big Ten Championship.

It's been a long time since the program has seen this sort of national recognition and attention.  No pressure...

Last season was the most fun I've had in about 10 years for the squad. I hope the expectations this year don't bury the team though. I want to see them go further but that's usually when they take a step back and lose a game they have no business losing.

Agreed, plus that murderers row of Mich, OSU, MSU is going to be brutal.

Tougher test this week but one they should be ready for after last year. Honestly it's all pretty routine till that rough stretch at the end of October. That will definitely be the whole year.

road games at Iowa and Northwestern are no cakewalk either..  however this team has the weapons that will make a tough matchup for anyone

Did anyone catch the sideline reporter interviewing the freshman girl? She looked white girl wasted. The guy asked her about the WE ARE! chant and she says, "It's great! Everybody knows it."

Her parents must be so proud of her.

I'm probably wrong but I think I saw the same interview and she had mentioned that she was not drunk :lmao:

James Franklin: "I know last year beating us for them was like the Super Bowl. This was just like beating Akron for us."

damn, low class.

Like you've NEVER said anything like that about Michigan. Heck, you're probably one of those people that replace M in your name with X during Michigan week.

IOW, spare me the lecture.

Im referring to his mentioning Akron. Low class.

I certainly don't pull the silly #### with Michigan. I don't even hate them honestly. Regardless, I'm not the coach.

I read the quote but I haven't heard the context. Franklin doesn't seem the type to straight dump on another coach. I feel like he meant that this was just another step in a long road and it came out wrong but hey maybe he and the Pitt coach have beef.

This is correct.  He wasn't calling out Akron.  He was just pointing out that this game was just another game in the season.

Pretty lackluster win, I thought.  They seemed sort of flat.  I thought McSorley especially seemed a little off.  He's entitled to a bad game, though. He's been so terrific the past year.  Better to shake off this type of game now rather than later.

McSorley overthrew a lot of passes today. And the defense was definitely flat after the initial adrenaline wore off.

But as you said, better now than OSU or Michigan.

I don't know if you can call a 19 point win an "ugly win" but they play another game like this against a ranked opponent then this might be a loss.

As for the post games comments, sounds like a media snippit to make the comment more dickish then usual.  Clever way to get some talk and buzz going.

I was thinking also, people rip on schools like Penn State that schedule cupcakes at the beginning of the year. This is essentially a preseason for the team though to work out all the stuff they're trying to setup and pad themselves with a 3-0 record going in to Big 10 play. Why play a team like Oklahoma early on when it all comes down to what you do against Michigan and OSU in late October?

But, then again, noted football player puncher Woody Hayes did make the comment that he only went for two after a touchdown against Michigan because he couldn't go for three.  There's low class for you, not comparing Pitt to Akron (i.e., "just another game")

And, let's be clear, Pitt DID treat it like a Super Bowl win. They had keychains made to commemorate it. But, hey, when you finish fourth in your division and lose in the Pinstripe Bowl you can't very well give out State Champion rings *cough* FLORIDA STATE! *cough*

Woody WAS an ###. It's a ####### game. The whole "act like your life depends on it" crap is ridiculous. That's the kind of old school behavior that allows Jerry Sandusky to remain around a program.

Of course, my team's opponent didn't plant their flag at midfield.

Yep.  I don't see why Franklin has to be such a jerk -- just enjoy the victory and move on.    I didn't go to Pitt and don't really care when they win or lose but I absolutely loathe Penn State.

Who said he was being a jerk? His attitude is to treat every game the same way. He's already said it about Georgia State, and I imagine he'll say it every week for every opponent.

When he prefaces by saying "beating us last year was like the Super Bowl for them" and referencing Akron believe me it was a dig.

If he would have said something like  "it was a big win for us, they all are..." it would have been much more classy.  But Penn State has this attitude like their poop doesn't stink and that is why I can't stand them.  Great school, great kids, but the attitude of the football program really turns me off so I root against them no matter who they play -- even Ohio State.

thought it was a good, but not great performance..  game was never in doubt

need to tighten things up for Big 10 play..   weather was PERFECT :banned:

I will say that it was a poor choice of words that Franklin used, no doubt about that.  But, if it's a rivalry then that is what is said sometimes by opposing coaches.  Slightly classless but nothing extreme.

Speaking of which, from today's Philadelphia Magazine: CNN Says Paterno Knew of Even Earlier Sandusky Allegations
When 'IT' happened it was a pretty big shock to everyone in the region.  I had stuck up for Paterno at first but sadly it does sound like he may have known of Sandusky's sick transgressions beforehand and chose to bury his head in the sand, just like school administration and local police.  A failure on so many levels.  A failure to those people who had their childhoods ruined by a disgusting wolf in sheep's clothing. This hopefully will never happen again here or anywhere else.

It was sloppy play.  They play that game against Michigan or OSU and they probably lose but better to get a game like this out of the way and hopefully iron out the wrinkles against Georgia State.

Then they have Iowa on the road in Kinnick.  I hate that place.  They definitely won't get away with playing a game like they played against Pitt there.

Still not impressed with the defense
I'm kinda hoping Moorhead has been hiding a lot of the playbook for Big Ten conference play.  I don't know how I am not satisfied with a 56-0 beat down of a cupcake but I'm not.  Nighttime in Kinnick gives me nightmares.

It's fun watching this team run wild all over lesser opponents like they used to in the glory days, but now I'm ready to see what this team can do against serious competition.

I agree with @CentralPA.  Iowa on the road at night has been a kryptonite for us and this sets up to make me nervous.

Well, this is...um...I don't like this at all.

PSU's offensive line is getting destroyed.  All they have is Barkley outrunning everyone to the outside.

I also don't understand going for it on 4th down twice outside of the 30-yard line, but getting conservative inside the 1-yard line. Don't get me wrong, I think both attempts outside of the 30-yard line where the right call.

And on a day when OK State loses and OK is in trouble.
