Let's talk suspenders (1 Viewer)

When I was a young man and dinosaurs ruled the earth, I used to wear suspenders.  I stopped many years ago in favor of a belt and am considering going back.

So: is there an age at which suspenders are inappropriate?

Where they are appropriate again?

Anyone here wear suspenders or really dig the suspender look?

I kind of thought suspenders were for people who couldn't find belts big enough.
Huh.  I've only worn them whilst skinny.

Like, when I didn't really have a waist and was just cinching a belt in to make the fabric stay by making it super tight (phrasing).

This is a lawyer thing, right, like seersuckers and Atticus Finch? I think you can do this and people will appreciate it. If anyone gives you hell about it tell them you're on your way to Galatoire's.

Yeah, I guess I can get away with it better than most being a Louisiana lawyer.

It takes a certain build and overall style to pull them off without looking somewhat shady, or like a shyster.  There is a fine line between style and shady there.

Example  dude in middle has style, guys on outside I would think about not doing business with (likely due to suspenders with frech cuff combo - and alternate color collar).  I think I've seen too many shady stock brokers and such in TV/movies that really turned the look off for me.  Didn't those two numbskulls in season 1 or 2 of Sopranos who were buddies with Christoper wear suspendes all the time - and some of those guys from Boiler Room.  Really turned off the look for me with guys under 40.

Seersucker is a southern thing, not just for attorneys.

I'm wearing a pair now. Not a joke. Also, I still receive compliments on them, but I don't know if they are actually tongue-in-cheek.

Yeah all 3 look pretty bad to me.

I only wear black, charcoal, or grey suits, white shirts.

The only people I know who wear suspenders are wannabe hipsters.  Or really old people who just don't give a #### (RIP grandpa).

I'm teetering between feeling like it's "classic" style and that it's too hipsterish.  But I feel like "classic" way outweighs hipster after age 40 or 45 at least, right? I mean, it's not ironic style unless you're in your 20s or early 30s.

You should be fine, then.  I just hate the young kids with slick back hair look trying to pull off suspenders.  Just that link had three people side by side.  If you're older (sorry), white shirt and going with a more traditional look, you should be fine.

Oof that looks terrible.  Assumed we were just talking about with suit and tie.

There, it comes down to status.  You can pull it off with status or look like a total wannabe ######## without.

I've never worn a pair of suspenders that were comfortable, and if I ever have the opportunity to wear a pair, it means I have a suit on, which means I will have a coat on quite a bit, which means you wouldn't see the uncomfortable suspenders much, which means I'll wear a belt.

I find suspenders much more comfortable than a belt.
