Le'veon Owner, reach for Conner? (1 Viewer)

In a non-PPR draft I have pick 13 and currently own Le'veon Bell. He hasn't been signed by Pitt long term yet, but presumably Conner will be his handcuff in Pittsburgh. And when Le'veon goes down the next RB up has gotten at least 23 touches per game (Deangelo and Fitz Touissant).

Should I reach a ton for Conner if no one lets me trade back? Or just take BPA? One of Hunt, Ross, Engram, Perine, Kamara, or Zay Jones will be there at 13.

I feel like it would be a missed opportunity to invest in Conner that high, but if Bell goes down then he could easily be a top 12 RB.  What are your thoughts?

Take the best player available at 13.  If it's Conner, fine.  If not I would draft assuming Bell goes down.  It's better if you take another player there and he breaks out.  Can't do that if you're playing safe.

I was in this position and managed to trade down, but I gave serious thought to the Conner pick.  I agree with those above, though...in the long run it isn't worth it, and you should take the BPA.

My exception would be if you are solidly in a championship window, your team is anchored by Bell, AND you lack RB depth.  If you really believe having Bell's backup is going to be the key to your winning a title right now, do it.

But far more likely, you'll be able to get someone like Zay or Hunt that looks strong enough early for you to trade them for Conner plus before Bell goes down.  BPA isn't just about value on your roster, it's also about future trade value for getting the positional needs or filling situational holes down the road.

Thanks guys!

This actually makes me feel way better about not taking Conner.  Not sure who I'll take, but I do have the RB depth to survive without Bell if he goes down. And I guess worst comes to worst I can trade for Conner in the future, especially if he hasn't played much through most of the year.

I agree with the advice not to take him at 13.  If Zay Jones is available I would take him, and there are others who have more upside than Conner to take there.  However, based on the rookie drafts I have seen so far, chances are he won't be available in the end of the 2nd/early 3rd.  I wouldn't worry about it, though.  He is a handcuff and nothing more for the foreseeable future so his value should go down from a mid 2nd round pick, which is generally where he is being taken in my leagues.  I think you will be able to trade for him later on, and depending on the team who drafts him you might be able to put together a larger deal that includes him and also gets you something else you are interested in.
