Wow. As a Charger fan, I could see the end coming, but this is one of the biggest falls from superstardom I've seen. Merriman is still relatively young.

3 years ago I thought the Bolts would be a top defense for years lead by annual All Pros Merriman and Cromartie. Now both are essentially gone, for virtually nothing.

I'm reading that they will likely release him this year, thus free to sign anywhere. And if that happens, Chargers will lose any compensatory pick coming their way. Crazy.

The likely 7th round compensatory pick probably isn't worth the money they'd spend hanging on to him this year. Better to dump him and do something potentially useful with the roster spot this season.

Don't think there was much of a comp pick coming their way anyway. No one is going to give Merriman a huge deal after the way he's dogged it the last couple of years. A misguided holdout, not having surgery after the Patriots game and instead waiting until the next season, and his "me first" persona is stale.

Isn't his salary guaranteed? Obviously they'll get relief if/when he's signed by another team, but until then I think they have to pay him.Agree w/re to the roster spot. Merriman being a GTD every week and only being able to go for a limited number of snaps wasn't helpful.

I guess it's been obvious for a while now, but kudos to the the Cowboys for making the right choice in the '05 draft. If only they had taken Merriman, and Ware had fallen to the Chargers with the next pick.

Isn't his salary guaranteed?
I have no idea - he's working on the tender he signed. Are those completely guaranteed?I also have no idea about how the minor injury designation thing works. From what I read it sounds like they release him pending some sort of settlement following the IR stint. What is the relationship of the settlement to his current contract? I assume the Chargers did the IR thing so they end up paying out less than if they simply release him - otherwise why not simply release him now? Lil help from MT, or any of the NFL rules committee heads?

Also you could've knocked me over with a feather if you'd told me back in 2006 that the starting OLB for the Chargers in 2010 would be Antwan Applewhite.

The roster turnover this year has been nuts.

i grabbed him in a dynasty league this offseason. i thought he would at least try and play hard for a new deal elsewhere. oh well.

I know that you can't simply release and injured player - that's where the settlement comes into play and becomes a necessary part of the divorce. I'm pretty sure Merriman's salary is guaranteed so he has little incentive to settle for much less, though the ability to move on with the team of his choice is certainly worth something to him.

Merriman is the most over-rated D player out there. I cannot believe announcers still talk about him. The guy has done nothing since getting caught for roids.

Without the steroids Shawn Merriman is junk. Glad I don't have to watch his stupid dance again. The Chargers are becoming a more likable team now with getting rid of the cancers of LT and Merriman and it seems Rivers has stopped yapping so much, good stuff in SD.

LTs a cancer??? you're crazy
If I'm crazy then gates and rivers might be my roomates in the bughouse because they said so much.

Damn the NFL and their substance policies. DAMN THEM. Another one bites the dust.. not to Hijack but looking at Peyton Hillis.. definition, jaw shape, etc.. I"m pretty sure he's next in line to fail a test.

I'm not saying you're wrong, and sometimes I wasn't enamored of the pouty complainian episodes but still...

future Patriot star
Normally I'd agree, but I don't think Merriman is a Belichick kind of guy. We're not talking about Junior Seau here.
The pats are desperate for a guy who can provide some sort of outside rush. Granted Merriman hasn't been that guy for a while, but I could see BB going into salvage mode here.
except merriman is a shell of his former roid-driven self and the pats are 6-1.other than that your logic is sound.

Just a reminder. Since Merriman had to get off the juice, he has become a joke of a LB in the NFL.

I alwasy disliked Merriman and his stupid dance. He is an idiot.

If it was not a waiver issue and they could work him out first and see what he has left...I wouldn't mind GB kicking the tires. Just not sure what he does have.

If they could make him really just a rotational/situational pass rusher to have opposite Matthews (or lining up next to him like they did with Chillar the other day)...could pay dividends.

I just don't like the waiver, taking on his contract, and not being able to really work him out first.

Still, its pretty low risk in an uncapped year. Would only be out the money...probably worth a shot.

If the shot is chick full of steroids.

I doubt anyone claims him off waivers - they'd be nuts to do that.

Call me crazy, but I would love to see the Browns give him a shot. I hate the guy's attitude, but loved his play his first couple of years.

Now how much of that was the steroids, and how much was actual skill? And if it is the latter, how much has his injuries cost him as well?

I don't think we'll ever know. All I know is that Merriman right now bears no resemblance to what he was 4 years ago on the field. He's not starting material at this point. His fall off the cliff has been Juan Gonzalesesque.

Sounds like he's going to Buffalo:

Adam_Schefter As Fox reported, Bills are set to claim LB Shawne Merriman. Unless Buffalo changes its mind, Merriman will be a Bill.

What a bunch of BS revisionist history going on in here.

Merriman got suspended for steroids in 2006.

In 2007 Merriman was having another pro-bowl season before sustaining an injury in TEN. You may argue he was never able to recover from that injury because he wasn't on steroids but to say Merriman wasn't a good player after being suspended for steroids use is simply ignorant to the facts.

lol
Enjoy.
0-7 teams with no pass rushing talent whatsoever can't be picky. I'm assuming Nix knows what he's getting at least. I'm not sure he could possibly be any worse than Aaron Maybin.Just found it funny that you thought nobody wanted him and the team with #1 waiver priority claimed him.
