"Limited Practice" (1 Viewer)

Does "Limited Practice" always mean no pads and running, or running on the side, or solo workouts, or normal reps with pads, just fewer of them. I am curious, does it generally have a specific regimen, or is it a pretty broad term that teams use?

Thanks,

Well, I'm a former journalist in RL and I tried to do some web research for you. There are many references to "limited practice" but no concrete definition that I could find.

But reading between the lines it seems to mean that you wear the red "no contact" jersey and can run through plays, but your teammates aren't allowed to jack you up. So you get reps on how the play is designed, but your gimpiness is spared the punishment.

"Running on the side" and "solo workouts" seem to be in their own category and come up more often with with players who are rehabbing. From what I've seen a player who does some running on the side isn't really practicing but is trying to get better.

As I said: this is pieced together. If someone has a link to something more definitive I'd love to see it.

Lord Fantasy got it outlined above - if you are taking part in team drills during practice, but can't be contacted (red jersey) then you are "limited". In my experience, guys who can only make it part way through practice can also be referred to as "limited". Rehabbing players "run on the sidelines" or "catch passes on the side" or "ride an exercise bike on the sidelines", but if they aren't involved on the field of play then they aren't counted as practicing. Guys in the training room/tub are "out" of practice, though they are still at team facilities. Guys who aren't in the training room but conferring with outside specialists (ie. Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham) are occasionally reported as "not at the team facility" when a team is trying to obscure that the person in question is being examined by an outside expert. Jerome Bettis told an amusing story (after he retired) of being checked into a hospital by the Steelers under the fake name "Tex Goldstein" while he was receiving offseason injury treatment - the Steelers didn't want other teams to know that Bettis was rehabbing...
