University of Maryland wide receiver Torrey Smith is visiting the Detroit Lions today, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
Smith (6-1, 204) caught 152 passes for 2,215 yards and 19 touchdowns during his Terrapins career, including 128 receptions for 1,879 yards and 17 touchdowns the last two seasons. Smith averaged nearly 26 yards per kick return with three touchdowns his first two seasons in the ACC.
Despite having a year of eligibility remaining, Smith earned his degree and declared for the 2011 NFL Draft.
"I'm glad I graduated," Smith said at the Combine. "I accomplished everything I could. I felt it was the right time to go the NFL. Coach (Ralph) Friedgen supported my decision."
Smith demonstrated his athleticism at the Combine, running a 4.43-40, posting a 41" vertical leap and a 10'06" broad jump.
The Lions have Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson under contract, but would like to get more production from the receiver position. Bryant Johnson and Derrick Williams were targeted 54 times, yet combined for just 21 receptions for 240 yards and zero touchdowns.
