Gerald Hayes

EJ Henderson

Angelo Crowell

Julian Peterson

Matt McCoy

Saints LB du jour
I heard something not too long ago that said Omar Gaither may take McCoy's starting spot. He had a decent preseason (Gaither that is). What's the latest 411 on this?

I've not read anything to suggest that. The Eagles look to be training Gaither up to play inside. And I haven't seen anything to suggest that McCoy was playing poorly. They originally signed Shawn Barber to start at WLB this offseason before McCoy showed he'd made the leap from over-his-head-rookie to able-second-year player.Got a link for us? Anyone else?

No link from me. But I'd say about 99% of my information comes from this site. No big deal for me. I have Gaither stashed away and I can afford to wait patiently. :)

Did a search -- may have been this post.Think that was a natural reaction to losing an all-around linebacker like Simoneau. Some were surprised to find Gaither getting snaps in the middle because most scouts saw his skill set as that of an outside linebacker. I don't see him moving McCoy out of the picture anytime soon. It's likely just a hedge against an injury to either Jones or McCoy. With Gocong out, I don't know that they want to rely on just Shawn Barber and Greg Richmond on the outside.

The comment on Gaither putting pressure on McCoy for WLB comes from the 8/30/06 Training Camp Report:

Defense: Omar Gaither is asserting pressure on Matt McCoy for a starting job at WLB. Gaither led the team with six tackles (5-1-0) against Pittsburgh.

Earlier comments refer to Gaither historically being an OLB and having to learn the MLB and a more recent comment about the need for him to step up and help at OLB as a result of the trade.

Excluding rookies, here's guys to watch out for:

Will Witherspoon - started last year but is being moved to the middle. Should rack up tackles for St. Louis.

Bart Scott - Started in the latter half of 2005. Should be a solid LB3.

Channing Crowder - still has some time to ripen but playing WLB for Miami should allow plenty of oppt'y to make plays.

Kawika Mitchell - Came on strong in latter half of 2005. Seems like the light finally went on. If he stays healthy I can't see him doing worse than last season (27th overall).

David Thornton - worth a late round flier. Not playing traditional SLB/WLB in Tennesee. Also could get the call in the middle if injury prone Peter Sirmon gets nicked. Lots of upside.

Ah, thanks.Henry does a ridiculous amount of work on those camp reports, but he might have been reading a bit too much into that one.
