Back in the day (pre-internet, pre-cell phones, and even pre-magazines), we had one guy who always said he would attend our live draft but then ended up with some conflict that kept him away. This one year, we had decided to do the draft at our workplace because it had a conference room with enough room for twelve people around the table. So we decided to order some pizza, bring in some beverages, and hold the draft there. Sure enough, this same guy then told us that he would be out of state on draft day.
The conference room did have a phone in it so the missing owner's best friend decides to call him from the conference room phone. Now at that time we were required to check our office phone logs monthly and account for any long distance calls. If they weren't attributable to a particular client (aka personal calls) we had to reimburse the company for any and all calls. This guy stayed on that same phone call for the entire three hour draft.
No one had actually reserved the conference room since it was after hours. No one else was around because we scheduled the draft to start around 7:00. Everyone else had gone home. I have no idea what that call must have cost the company. At the time, long distance calls were pretty pricey. None of us ever admitted to that call for fear of getting fired.
