I don't know if this is the same research the OP was referring to (link is dead now), but the idea surrounding actual immortality is in the news again. Here's the gist:

Its the same guy, Aubrey De Grey.But he's not alone in pursuing this anymore. Even Google is with their subsidiary, Calico.

I'd say the odds of this happening before I die are looking fairly decent. Better than 50/50.

I read something that said the first person to live to at least 150 is alive today and is probably in their 50s. I'm thinking it's me.
