Local Neighborhood Festivals (1 Viewer)

I'm a carnival/festival guy at heart and I love bringing my kids (age 6 and 4). Last year at the local one I spent the $100 I brought in 25 minutes. This year I was much better/smarter and spent $125 in 3.5 hours. The unlimited ride bracelets are the key.

All my favorite festivals involve people pretending to care about culture X and getting hammered while listening to traditional music from that country/region. There's also usually a 5K at some point.

I just go for the people watching. We go to one every so often where we have a competition to see who can spot more Looney Tunes or Nascar shirts. Losers buy the winner drinks. If you find a shirt that combines both Looney Tunes and Nascar, the game automatically ends and you win.

One of the best neighborhood festivals in the world is Saint Anthony's Day in Lisbon. Everybody fires up their grills around 4pm on June 12th and starts cooking up sardines and pork. $1 beers and $1 sangrias everywhere. A parade where all the neighborhoods compete against each other. Then they party all nights on the streets until about 5 am the next morning. It almost has the feeling of a big wedding reception, which in a way it kind of is as 16 couples get married the next day and everyone is invited. Music playing everywhere and people dancing and eating and being friendly.

The tradition relates to a remarkable event that occurred while the 13th-century Catholic saint was in Rimini, Italy. Depressed that the locals would not listen to his sermons, he wandered to the shore to confide in the fish. Suddenly, row upon row of fish raised their heads above the waves, from nippers in the shallows to sizeable listeners in the deep water.

Rimini’s townsfolk flocked to witness the fish, which bowed their heads and opened their mouths to show their reverence to the wandering missionary.
