I like all three of these guys and I think each of them will be serviceable MLB long-term starters, and all of them have a very high ceiling with #1 starter potential.
Trevor Bauer: Prospect Pitchers are a big gamble mostly because of the risk of injury. The thing that I like about Bauer the most is that “He Thinks” that he has a handle on the way pitchers should throw to avoid injury. If you’re going to sign a prospect pitcher to a 15-year deal it is comforting to know that the guy that you choose has a great knowledge of pitching and was taught “the right way” to avoid elbow problems. Whether or not you believe him or not, or buy into what he says – at least he is confident that he is doing things the right way and differently than other pitchers. Look at his comment from a Sports Illustrated article from last year “When Bauer first saw Strasburg pitching with his elbow above his shoulder, he felt a pit in his gut, and when he saw the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright doing the same, he felt it again. Both are currently recovering from Tommy John surgery. "I was like, 'No!' because I love watching those guys," Bauer says. "And I feel so sorry for them because it's not their fault. They were taught this way. I was just lucky enough to be taught a different model." This is very comforting and knowing that he has a long-toss throwing everyday training method is intriguing as well. Hell, Satchel Paige and Bob Feller threw everyday and had long careers……
Positives: Unique style of pitching, self made through hard work and training, feels that he has been taught the right way, his stuff is in the high 90’s and has dominated in both high school and UCLA and out-performed Cole in college. Seems to have a great knowledge of pitching and great movement on his pitches. ETA: Could come later in 2012, but more likely in 2013.
Negatives: size, unique style of pitching
Gerrit Cole: Big guy “prototypical size” who can light up the radar gun. Overpowering power pitcher who has been consistently successful through high school and college.
Positives: A big Power Pitcher “A Horse” whose body should be able to take the wear and tear. Dominating Stuff- that can top 100mph. ETA: Could come later in 2012, but more likely in 2013.
Negatives: Not many. It has been mentioned that sometimes his pitches come in flat? There is always injury risk that comes with Pitchers.
Carlos Martinez: Easy throwing motion and can throw in excess of 100mph. Was dominating in last years futures game. Has been compared to Pedro, but is younger than Cole and Bauer by about a year. His minor league manager had this to say about him in an article last year: Rodriguez, who scouted for many years for several teams besides managing and coaching, didn't hesitate long in offering a comparable to Martinez. The name also was Martinez, as in former Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez.
"I saw Pedro Martinez young, at 19," Rodriguez said. "He hadn't made the Dodgers yet. I mentioned then that that kid was going to be special.
"But I see Carlos with a more advanced breaking ball. Pedro threw 93, 95, 96 (miles an hour). Carlos is 97, 99 and 100."
Positives: Electric stuff and easy throwing motion.
Negatives: size, age, not as experienced here in the states and his command has not been as good as the other two. ETA late 2013, but 2014 is more likely.
I like all of these guys and think they are all good bets for successful MLB careers. I guess right now I am leaning towards Bauer as he seems to think that he is doing things the right way as far as avoiding injury. Avoiding the big injury is very important for any big prospect pitcher.
I look forward to more of your comments and votes.
