There is no way to think of the Steelers without thinking of Myron Cope. He's one of the people who inspired me (and Im sure many others) to get into sports talking/writing. Most Steelers fans know this, but others may not - Around Western Pa, people usually muted their TV and listened to Cope call the game on the radio while they watched it.Widely known as the creator of the Terrible Towel, Myron has also been given credit by Jack Ham with coining the "Steel Curtain" nickname for the Hall of Fame defense of the 70's. He also was the first broadcaster to use Michael Ord's Immaculate Reception description of Franco's miraculous catch.
I'm a lifelong Bengal fan, but I know I won't be in the minority when I say that there are a whole bunch of folks who'd rather listen to Myron that somebody like Joe Buck or some other cookie-cutter, buttoned-down smooth-voiced bore. Guys like Cope can't be replaced.:(![]()
RIP Myron. The guys voice could go right through you (if you werent a Steelers fan), but he sure was fun to listen to.
