Longtime Steelers announcer Myron Cope has passed away (1 Viewer)

:towelwave:  :towelwave:
Widely known as the creator of the Terrible Towel, Myron has also been given credit by Jack Ham with coining the "Steel Curtain" nickname for the Hall of Fame defense of the 70's. He also was the first broadcaster to use Michael Ord's Immaculate Reception description of Franco's miraculous catch.
There is no way to think of the Steelers without thinking of Myron Cope. He's one of the people who inspired me (and Im sure many others) to get into sports talking/writing. Most Steelers fans know this, but others may not - Around Western Pa, people usually muted their TV and listened to Cope call the game on the radio while they watched it. :towelwave:  :towelwave:

I'm a lifelong Bengal fan, but I know I won't be in the minority when I say that there are a whole bunch of folks who'd rather listen to Myron that somebody like Joe Buck or some other cookie-cutter, buttoned-down smooth-voiced bore. Guys like Cope can't be replaced.

"Yoi, zounds and double yoi!"

Myron rocked, even during the times when he would be getting on my last nerve with his "Hmmm, hah!" schtick. I always thought it'd be cool just to talk football with Myron(not just Steelers. Football in general.) Dude got to see a lot of stuff over the years, I'd wager.

As someone else stated, Myron has pretty much been my Steeler voice since birth. Even though he hung 'em up in 2005, it's not gonna be the same at all.

One of the things I remember most about him was how much Steeler fans would get jacked up when he'd be around. I can recall being at a playoff game at TRS in 1992. Cowher's first year and the Steelers were playing the Bills. 20 below and the Steelers were losing. I was stuck in a seciton that was 95% Bills fans and about halfway through the 3rd quarter they show some video spoof of Billy Ray Cyrus with Myron in a cowboy getup on the jumbotron and the Steelers' fans all went ape@#$, my buddy and I included. We look around and just about every Bills fan is looking at one another with this look of horror/confusion. It was wonderful. :)

Godspeed, Cope.

A shame we lost two of the greatest orators of the 20th century in one day. Cope and Bill Buckley Jr. Imagine the conversation those two must be having as they wait to enter the pearly gates.

I am Steeler fan that has never lived in the Pittsburgh area so my exposure to Myron was somewhat limited, but the fact that he invented the terrible towel is really all that needs to be said. As a youngster growing up in Omaha Nebraska in the 70's, it really wasn't possible for me to get my hands on a terrible towel. I used waive a beige towel from our linen closet around when I watched Steeler games on TV. I finally got myself a terrible towel in the early 90's and have been waiving it around ever since. Here we go!

RIP Myron
