Lottery Draft (1 Viewer)

This year my local league we want to do a lottery to select the draft order, like the NBA lottery system. We are going to use last year's final standings to rank teams. My question is 1) has anyone ever tried this? and if so 2) What percentages did each team have of getting the top pick?

We have 13 teams in the league.

Well...not sure if this helps....but we do a complete redraft league and we use the NBA lottery system....but its not weighted...everyone gets one envelope.

A suggestion might be.....10 chances to the person that finished 10th.....9 gets 9.....etc.

I guess it depends on how many keepers and how your league works....

Good Luck....Kiz

3rd year for the league, we keep 2 every year. W thought about 13 balls for last place, down to 1 ball for 1st place.... but the thought was (btween me and co-commisioner) was that wasn't enough of a weighted chance for the worst teams. I believ the NBA gives the worst team a 25% chance at the 1st pick... but thats based on a 1000 balls. So basically the worst teams has 250 balls in the tumbler. That seems like too much work so we'd like to pare it down to workable numbers.... hope that all makes sense?

We do a worst to first first round and then a weighted lottery for the 2nd round (I've been arguing against it for years with no success).

10 team league, 10 entries to the worst record, 9 to second worst, etc.

This past year I had the worst record and still ended up with the 8th pick in the round. I was out of state and had to draft via IM, so it's possible I got intentionally screwed, but obviously the potential certainly exists for those top spots to fall quite a bit still.

We do this in my league. We have a 12 team league.

It's 10 ping pong balls (PPB for short) to all the teams that do not make the playoffs (which is 6 teams). It's set this way to help avoid a team "tanking".

The two teams knocked out of the first round of playoffs get 6 PPB.

The two teams knocked out of the second round get 4 PPB.

The runner-up gets 2 PPB and the league champ gets 1 PPB.

We also have various contests throughout the year in which owners can earn bonus PPB for the draft lottery.

When we do the lottery: Each time a PPB is selected, the owner gets to choose which draft slot among the available slots.

nice ideas there.... I like the incentive to earn extra ppb's

I would never do the weighted system- why penalize a team for last years success and the investment of their preparation to draft a good team. We do a lottery to select draft placement, no weighting, as I believe a redraft league should be.

We have been doing this for years .

12 teams DYNASTY league with 8 teams making it in the playoffs .

So what we do is the 4 teams that did nt make the playoff are in the lottery .

We give 10 tickets ( last place gets 4 then 3 - 2 and one for the 9th place finisher. Then we have a draw , whoever runs out of tickets first gets the 4th picks then continue until there is one ticket left and he gets top pick )

from the 5th of the 12th pick it s in the order of the standings . One exception the two finalists get pick 11 ans 12 .

I guess I can see this viewpoint. However, from the perspective of the defending champ, I really enjoy the challenge of having a bulls-eye on my back and being placed behind the 8-ball, so to speak. But then again, I should mention that our league is not a complete redraft. We do keep 3 players (plus a development player, which I won't go into detail here). So, it's a little different than your argument.

We do this in my keeper league.

Last place gets 14 pieces of paper, 2nd from last 13, 12th place 12. etc etc all the way down to #1.

Then I draw a piece of paper to see who gets the first pick, I thine take all pieces of paper out for the player who gets the first pick and continue on doing that.

So it makes it kind of random, but this year the dood with one piece of paper ended up getting the 2nd pick, lucky him I guess.

So tanking the league doens't always make you a lock to get a top pick

We used to do a lottery based on results from the previous season, but we abandoned it after a team tried to tank to get the most chances. I mean, seriously tried to tank, like releasing all their players to pick up backups.

Now we're an unweighted random draw for choice of slots.

We used the balls for the lottery - and it helped alleviate teams that were intentionally tanking.

Before, obviously, they drafted from the reverse finish. Now the non playoff teams get an approriate amount of lotteryballs and we draw out the order. Works great. But then again, there is a ton of pride in my couple main leagues, no body wants to be the loser. We have "penaltys" against the bottom dwellers.
