Mack Brown stepping down (2 Viewers)

Really this was the big hire for Texas? Not bad, but when you are Texas I was expecting the heavens to part and angels sing when the announcement was made.
Every half decent program expects a Saban level hire now. It's just not going to happen most of the time.
And even Saban wasn't a Saban level hire at the time. Bombed out in the NFL. Successor to three spares at Alabama. I think there's a significant part of the Texas fanbase that had an "A" list of Saban, the two guys that coached in the Super Bowl last year, and the two guys that are coaching the National Championship game this year. Those fans are delusional #######s.

It doesn't help that ESPN has its tongue up UT's butt.

I think the Harbaugh rumors were even better than the Saban ones. As myopic of a rumor as I've ever see.

Well, they do have a certain financial motivation. Texas gets its money regardless of whether anyone ever watches LHN. ESPN is the one on the hook for the deal.

Agreed. I can't remember the last time there was a college hire where fans said, "this mediocre program is going to be really good in a couple years" except for Brian Kelly going to notre dame. That seemed like an obvious win. Same with Meyer to ohio state.

I think it's a great hire for UT - I've always really like Strong and hope he does a great job there.

Haven't heard anyone say it but I think it's a pretty big deal having an African American head coach at Texas.

All that matters is 10+ wins every year.

He's older than I imagined though.
He was an assistant at Florida under 5 different head coaches. He really should have gotten his first head coach job long before he did. A lot of people have questioned whether his interracial marriage was a factor in it taking so long.

I am sure we will ad nauseam how this is the first black coach to win at Texas.

First black head coach at Texas to have a team kick a fg

First black head coach to have a team score a td

First black head coach at Texas to win a Big 12 Game ...

The media has turned coaches searches into a circus, and makes just about every hire look like the school got the 4th guy on their list.

There are without a doubt reported turn downs that never actually were offers.

In the end, if we heard no names other than speculation until this hire was announced...it would look good. Which I think it is. Fanbase is definitely happy with the replacement.

Agreed. When Dooley was hired at Tennessee it was a freaking circus. They talked to three people: muschamp, Cutcliffe, and Dooley. Muschamp's agent requested that the school not speak to any other candidates while they are discussing the job which meant the end of the conversation. Cutcliffe wanted to bring is own assistants which gave the school pause. So Dooley got the job and turned out to perhaps be the worst bCs football coaching hire ever

This last time they offered the job to strong, were turned down, and immediately went after jones.

In both cases there were no fewer than 6 other coaches who "turned the job down" or "withdrew".

The Chip Kelley one had me rolling. Guy was coaching a team to the playoffs in his first NFL season. BUT IT'S TEXAS!!!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
You guys think that's bad, you should join me on the Houston rockets forum. Let me see if I can find the recent link where a guy built a trade around Terrence jones and omer Asik that landed Kevin love and derron Williams both in Houston in time for Phil Jackson to come be the coach...

That guy is you, isn't it?

Will this help recruiting inside the state of Texas?
Did they have a problem recruiting inside Texas before? What are you getting at?
Alabama signed the #1 player in Texas on Thurs. The rest of the 9 highest ranked kids are split between LSU, TAMU, Baylor, and Oregon. They definitely have room for improvement.
Solomon Thomas is still available (#3 player). Though he's going to Stanford if he gets admitted. Otherwise, it sounds like a UCLA, Texas, Ohio St. battle for him, and Texas might be intriguing with Strong.

#10 (Zach Whitley) is going to UCLA.

Did you just refer to OSU and Notre Dame as "mediocre programs"?

Re: Red McCombs statements.

I have a distant relative-by-marriage that has been voting Democrat forever in a family that watches Fox News 24/7. They argue over politics and she holds firms that the democratic values are the way for this country to move forward even though everyone else around will be talking about the NRA, the GOP, how Bill Clinton is a liar, etc.

But in 2008, she voted for John McCain and said, "you know, all these years I didn't realize that the democratic party was the one responsible for higher taxes. Once I realized that I decided to vote for John McCain." I told my brother in law that I found it strange that a person who spent so much time as a Democrat wasn't familiar with some of the core principles of the party. To which he replied, "Abe, she was a racist long before she was an idiot."

McCombs is an idiot, crook, liar, old money, dumb ###. I'd be embarrassed to have his name on a business school. His dealing with the Circuit of Americas Formula 1 track in Austin have strongly reinforced my glowing reviews of him. He's so out of touch, but UT doesn't care as long as he's writing checks.

He's a reasonably unlikeable guy, but he's not an idiot, he made his own money, and I'm not sure he's a crook.

That's the entrepreneur in you speaking.

What did he do with F1? I'd like to read more. Thanks.

The best thing about this whole thing is that Powers and Patterson have restored the balance of power so that the donors aren't making all the decisions at Texas. Dodds and brown used to talk to mccombs and jamail at least weekly just to let them know what was going on. Patterson and strong aren't going to do that. So now red is lashing out.

Art Acevedo (local police chief) called in right after to say he'd had lunch with Strong and was very happy and thought he would do well.

So did Strong kind of have to have lunch with that guy and other community people as an informal part of the job?

I think Strong was a great hire and agree he is what is needed to change the country club atmosphere for the players. I remember reading Meat on the Hoof and being in awe of the Longhorn football program in the 70's. I liked his response to the question in his introduction press conference about not necessarily being the #1 choice for the job - "20, 15, it doesn't matter, whatever choice I was. I am the head football coach."

I think its kinda expected. The head football coach at the University of Texas is by default one of the most important people in Austin. I think he's expected to be a part of the community.

That's a far cry from serving the big donors a warm glass of milk and tucking them in to bed every night like Mack Brown did.

I have never been a fan of Powers and we'll see how Patterson turns out. You can upset the apple cart and go against the grain for a while, but, eventually the big foundation contributors are going to have their say again. Patterson will eventually need to work with everyone or he will be a short term AD, which may be the objective. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer".

Always helps to know the police chief when you coach a College football team to make sure you get notified quickly when to come down and pick up one of your guys.

I've never been a part of a big university culture in any way, but that was my perception. I just think it's interesting because sometimes people think that these college jobs are such great gigs and don't understand why people leave (see PSU/O'Brien, among others). If you are not into that, it's going to get tiresome quickly. I would think that I would just want to focus on football and not have all these lunches and other crap.
