Malcolm Floyd- Sneaky play this Week? (1 Viewer)

Any thoughts on Floyd having a solid week this week or maybe even breaking out.

Reading between the lines it seems he might be passing Chambers for playing time.

I have to figure Asomugha will be on Jackson(the stud receiver) and with SD having

difficulty running the ball behind their line it seems Rivers might be doing more passing.

Thanks

He's going to have a great game tomorrow as Ashm will be locked on Jackson and they are going to try and involve him more in the passing game...No contest when comparing Chambers and Floyd

I'm more worried about SD getting an early lead with a defensive TD or two. After VJax had 142 in the 1st half, they stopped passing the rest of the game. Floyd needs to get his points in only a half of football.

Interesting point about Asomugha staying on one side of the field although

I don't see the common sense in it.

It's the same approach most of Deion Sanders' teams used with him. If he exclusively plays one side, they never need to give help on that side of the field, which reduces the ground for the rest of the defense to cover. This was always stated for Deion as him "taking away half of the field", which was an overstatement, but you get the picture.

yeah, if he switched over to the other side of the field he'd still be covering half.

I'm sure he's probably just more comfortable on that one side.

No, this would not give the same advantage to the defense. They build their gameplan around him taking either the left or right side of the field. If he just switched back and forth, they'd have to move everyone else around or give up the advantage they gain by being able to slide coverage to the opposite side... and with motion, it would be tough to move everyone around opposite the direction of the motion. There are advantages to either method, whether he stays on one side or just follows the other team's WR1 around the field. Apparently, the Raiders (and maybe Asomugha) prefer the pros and cons to keeping him on one side to those of moving him around. :homer:

Rivers was really looking for him alot early, but it seemed like after the 1st qtr he was forgotten.

if this were a competitve game he likely would have ended up with better stats. i think VJ and Floyd make up the tallest starting tandem since TO and JJ Stokes. Naanee,Floyd,Jackson,Gates aren't quite the redskins smurfs

In watching the game it appeared Floyd started and Chambers rotated in.

SD was able to get enough done running the ball and did not have to throw much.

If you didn't have him already, the Chargers cutting Chambers is a big neon 'look here' sign for all but the most casual fantasy football owner.

So Floyd is #2 now?Considering dropping Maclin for him but haven't really watched him, kids a stud?

Floyd is #2, but he's not a bonafide #2 WR. He's shown himself to be adept at making the big play when he has been given the opportunity, but he is a bit of a one-trick pony. He is not much of a route-runner when it comes to the short-to-intermediate passing game, but is extremely dangerous when it comes to the deep ball. Yesterday as a starter he had 2 catches. Legedu Naanee will be in the mix as well.

I disagree with all of the bolded.I made this post several days ago:

Naanee and Floyd are obviously completely different WRs. Naanee has a career ypr of 8.9, while Floyd's is 16.9. You compared Naanee to Boldin, whose career ypr is 12.8. To me, Naanee reminds me of a guy best suited for a slot WR and possibly an H-back kind of role.

If Naanee was the #2 and played a lot of snaps split wide in 2 WR sets, his ypr would presumably go up, as would his TD opportunities. But Floyd seems better suited to being an outside WR, and Naanee better suited to the slot. And that seems to be how the Chargers are using them this year.

By game:

Game 1 - Naanee had 27 snaps - 16 in the slot and 11 wide; Floyd had 6 snaps - 3 in the slot and 3 wide

Game 2 - Naanee had 29 snaps - 22 in the slot, 6 wide, and 1 at H-back; Floyd had 8 snaps - all wide

Game 3 - Naanee had 23 snaps - 12 in the slot and 11 wide; Floyd had 23 snaps - 2 in the slot and 21 wide

Game 4 - Naanee had 23 snaps - 17 in the slot and 6 wide; Floyd had 26 snaps - 3 in the slot and 23 wide

Game 5 - Player Participation Log not yet available at profootballfocus

Not including game 5, Naanee has had roughly 2/3 of his snaps in the slot. Meanwhile, Floyd has had more than 80% of his snaps wide. I think when the log is available for game 5, it will confirm this trend. I also think it will confirm the trend of Floyd's snaps increasing. As someone said, he was very visible early in the game.

That data above would be even more interesting if we could tell where the players were lined up on plays when they were targeted. I suspect Naanee was targeted much more when he was in the slot than when he was outside, and vice versa for Floyd.

If the Chargers view Naanee as the likely successor to Chambers as the #2, I'm not sure why they aren't using him outside more, since that will be an important part of his job... it would seem that he needs to gain more experience out there.

I have been higher than most everyone around here on Floyd, and I think he has great potential. His problems are age and durability. However, if he holds up and plays well this season, I think the Chargers could probably sign him to a reasonably priced contract to keep him, and keep Naanee in the slot. Then they would be set at WR and could focus their efforts elsewhere, since they need help everywhere except QB and TE. I think there is a good chance this will happen.

If so, unfortunately from a fantasy perspective, the presence of Jackson, Gates, and good receiving RBs will probably continue to limit Floyd and Naanee next year and beyond.

For disclosure, I picked up Floyd in my dynasty league last week and plan to hold him while it plays out. Naanee was available earlier this season (not last week), but I passed.
To bring the game log stuff up to date:By game:

Game 5 - Naanee had 17 snaps - 13 in the slot, 3 wide, and 1 at fullback; Floyd had 20 snaps - all wide

Game 6 - Naanee had 24 snaps - 14 in the slot, 7 wide, and 3 at H-back; Floyd had 27 snaps - 1 in the slot and 26 wide

Game 7 - Naanee had 21 snaps - 12 in the slot, 6 wide, and 3 at H-back; Floyd had 31 snaps - 5 in the slot and 26 wide

In San Diego's last 3 games, Naanee has just 1 catch for 5 yards on just 1 target, compared to 7 catches for 124 yards and a TD for Floyd on 12 targets... and that doesn't count multiple pass interference penalties drawn by Floyd. Naanee's average has dropped to 9.4 ypr on the season, and he has yet to score an NFL TD in his career. Floyd is averaging 17+ ypr and is now starting. Last year, there was a stretch of 7 games when Floyd emerged, before he got hurt... Chambers was hurt for much of that time... and Floyd was the 26th best fantasy WR over that stretch using FBG scoring.

Floyd has decent fantasy potential here... Naanee will probably get a few more looks now, but the main beneficiary should be Floyd unless he flops with the opportunity.

if this were a competitve game he likely would have ended up with better stats.
Final score 24-16, 6 points... The thing about Floyd is that even if he gets more targets than Nannee, he's still the 5th option on the team. Both RBs, Jackson and Gates will be targeted before Floyd. The up side is that he's big and will always be an endzone and jump ball target. Really wouldn't go further on him than a WR3/4 or a flex.I wish I would of started him this last week instead of Avery...
