Man doesn't vote for himself, loses election. BUT... (1 Viewer)

neither does anyone else.

RICEVILLE, Ia. — The apathy surrounding school board elections — where votes can number in the hundreds, or even less — has drawn the rebuke of many a teacher. But this week, apathy hit a new low in one northern Iowa district.

The AP reports that the lone candidate for a Riceville school board district seat didn't vote for himself, and neither did anyone else.

Preliminary figures from Howard County say only 36 people voted in Tuesday's election, and no one voted in District 3, where Randy Richardson was the only person running. Riceville is a farming community of about 500 residents, and the district covers Riceville and McIntire — population 122 — and the surrounding area.

If a county canvass doesn't turn up any votes for Richardson, the school board will have to appoint someone or hold a special election.

Richardson says he's willing to be appointed. The 42-year-old told the Mason City Globe Gazette that he was too busy Tuesday to vote.

Turnout was low in school board elections held through the Des Moines metro this week. In Des Moines only 4,740 voters — or 4.12 percent — of the 115,103 registered voters cast ballots.

Why doesn't Iowa hold school board elections the same time/same ballot as other elections? :loco:
