Man found not guilty of stealing cheese, but he left his trial before the verdict and got prison time (1 Viewer)

Jurors found Allen Cochran not guilty of trying to steal $33 in sharp cheddar from the Food Lion on Colley Avenue in November 2015.

But the 49-year-old wasn’t there Friday to hear he’d gotten off.

He’d absconded from his own trial.
Circuit Judge Everett Martin told jurors the defendant hadn’t returned for their verdict after sitting through a one-day trial, in which he faced two felony charges.

So the jurors, who’d found him guilty of failing to show up for a previous court hearing, retired once more to figure out how they wanted to punish him.

They could’ve sentenced him to no jail time. Or Cochran still could have walked out of court a free man as long as they didn’t give him more than the seven months he’d already banked at the Norfolk jail.
Instead, they hit him with the max: five years in prison.

Martin issued a warrant for his arrest for contempt of court and absconding from his own trial.

Cochran hadn’t been arrested as of Sunday night and was listed as a fugitive.

ok.. so he had already done 7months for... waiting on trial for this? stealing cheese? or was the time served for something else?

"Man, I'm feta with this place.  Havarti done 7 months and I'm outta here".

He's gonna be doing hard time breakin' roquefort five years over that? He stole cheese and ran. Not exactly a muenster.

Man, that guy...and the cheese and everything....oh man, funny stuff right? Heh. Heh heh heh.

No wait! It was an open and shut queso!!!

Still got it.

Man, that's a mozzarella injustice. That jury doesn't know Monterrey Jack about fairness. It's one thing to cheddar a man's Mascarpone, but this is a horseradish of a different color.

American too Krafty for his own gouda: Individual under wraps by court system for 7 months during processing flees prior to delivery of verdict. Jurors sharply critical and state, "We want this whiz back in the can for 5 years!" Search for fugitive has focused on the Hood, but now spreading throughout the entire Land O'Lakes.

What's the big deal? The guy just said to himself "I ricotta get outta here!"

Maybe he was holed up a hotel...The Stilton perhaps?

Lets Caerphilly watch this story. Maybe he gets a whey with no jail time

In the mean time, I'm going to keep drinking and have some Morbier

Never ever waste a juror's time if you can help it.  It won't end well for you.
I once won an in absentia jury trial. I should have lost, too, but the prosecutor was way too generous with not objecting and I got in evidence that probably should have been kept out. Still, plenty there to convict and it was a pretty big shocker. Definitely a top 5 win.

...  but he had a thick Mexican accent.  When they asked him if it was his, he shrugged and said, "Aye queso."
