| Lawson out for the season

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers LB Manny Lawson (knee) will miss the rest of the season because of a torn ACL in his left knee. Lawson was injured during practice Wednesday, Sept. 19.

2 games: 12 tackles - 1 sack - 1pd

Tully Banta-Cain is listed behind him on the depth chart. But I wonder if Brandon Moore might take over?

With Jay Moore already on IR, Lawson's spot will most likely be filled by Brandon Moore.

BMoore previously played outside before he moved inside last year and took over for that stiff Derek Smith. Big upgrade for BM in IDP leagues.

The sleeper in this situation is Paras Haralson, who looked good in camp last year before getting hurt. He might be worth rostering in deep leagues if you, like me, think Derek Smith is awful and its only a matter of time before BMoore moves back inside and takes his job.

I don't see any effect on PWillis at all.

woo-hoo!

Here's one more school of thought on Lawson's impact on PW.

Lawson was the only OLB on the team with the athletic ability to cover TEs. BMoore and Haralson, whomever Lawson's replacement is, can not do this. This *could* mean that Willis blitzes less and is forced into coverage more in obvious passing situations.

Therefore, I see the impact like this:

BMoore--big upgrade in both Ts and Sacks

PWillis--no impact on Ts, less Sacks/Pressures, perhaps more INTs and PDs

Haralson--will get time on the field now, not sure of how much or his impact. Perhaps a few sacks

"Coach Mike Nolan has not yet decided whom will take Lawson's spot at strong outside linebacker on Sunday against the Steelers. Veteran Hannibal Navies is listed behind Lawson on the depth chart. Parys Haralson could also see playing time."

from Santa Rosa Press Democrat

He, Ulbrich, and Keith Lewis are "special teams only" players, IMO

I know Moore played outside in the 4-3, but did he ever play outside on the 3-4? If so, how did he do?

As 5 Rings said above, Moore has some experience as an OLB in a 3-4, though not much. The speculation comes mostly from the success he's had as a standup pass rusher on nickel downs in the past.

His experience as a 3-4 OLB was limited to the preseason last year and the first few games of the season....when Nolan realized he didn't have the horses to run the 3-4 and switched back to the 4-3 real quick. This preseason he spent most of his time inside, as he 'was' the starter until PW took that turd Derek Smith's spot, and Nolan moved DS to BM's spot :goodposting: This season he's just been a nickel/situational rush backer. His game is all attack--they know better than to ask him to cover Heath Miller (I think so, at least) and will have him on a seek and destroy mission.

Sad. Lawson was coming into his own. I was most impressed with the strength generated from that long frame. I saw him really push some OL around that he was giving up 50+ pounds to - with his explosion off the snap and coverage abilities, he was really coming into his own. He also engulfed ballcarriers on a few plays. He was jiving well with that intimidating defensive style Mike Nolan installed. Moore should be able to replace some of his pass rush punch, but Lawson was still one of the two or three most important guys on that defense.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat discussed Lawson's possible replacements on the radio this afternoon.

KNBR Fitz & Brooks Show Interview is only maybe 3 minutes long.

He mentioned Hannibal Navies as the first option and likely the best fit.

Good stuff Rick.I was hoping this wasn't the case.....to this fan it just doesn't make a lick of sense to have Hannibal >>BM or Haralson, but thats why I'm just a fan I guess. I was wrong on BM.

Matthew Baros: The team already has lost another outside linebacker, Jay Moore, for the season with a high-ankle sprain. Veteran Hannibal Navies likely will start in place of Lawson with second-year player Parys Haralson also factoring into the mix

Very sad. One of my favorite players and he was proving Jene wrong this year. :lmao: Oh well, just checking in to throw my hat in the Haralson comments. Parys is very explosive and I won't be at all surprised if he gets some sacks as a specialist and ends up with an expanded role.

Yeah, I think Lawson got hit in the head during the last preseason game. Was becoming a very nice player over the past two games after looking just as lost as ever at times during preseason. Hopefully he recovers fully from his injury. That front seven was fun to watch on MNF.

"I know the position but nothing has been decided yet," Navies said. "I have more experience outside than I do inside. I have more recent experience outside. I feel real comfortable there."

Navies has lasted as long as he has in the league by being versatile. In eight seasons with four teams he's played in 91 games and started 49. In his first year with the 49ers in 2006, he started twice at the strong outside position and once in the middle.

Navies, 30, is a local guy, born and raised in Berkeley and a graduate of Berkeley High. He played in college at Colorado.

"The reason I have been around so long is I can do so many things," he said. "The more you can do, the better off you'll be. I'm not just some guy that came here. I played a lot last year. I know the plays, I know the coaches, I know the scheme."

Haralson is in his second year from Tennessee. He was a fifth-round pick of the 49ers last year whose rookie season was limited to seven games because of a chest injury.

"If I do go in, I'll be prepared," he said. "I worked in the offseason on drops and pass rush. I feel a lot more comfortable than I did last year."

If any player is used to being moved around, it's Moore. He's been with the 49ers since 2002 and has started 25 of 74 games in that span. He's been used inside, outside and now in the team's nickel pass defense. He's a true jack-of-all-trades.

"I've done it in the past," he said of the outside position. "It's a little different than inside linebacker. It's a little more of a defensive lineman's mentality, but it's still a linebacker position."

Navies' last month: depth guy to fill-in starter to doubtful because of a knee injury to cut. The NFL is a tough business.

Associated Press - October 20, 2007 6:24 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco 49ers waived linebacker Hannibal Navies today and signed fullback Zak Keasey from the practice squad to the active roster before their game against the New York Giants. Navies, a ninth-year pro with his fourth NFL team, started the 49ers' last two games after Manny Lawson was lost for the season with a knee injury. He has nine tackles, one sack and one forced fumble this season. Navies was doubtful for San Francisco's visit to New York on Sunday because of a knee injury. Keasey is a special-teams contributor who spent two games on the active roster last month before returning to the practice squad.
