Looks like 2 years, $45M
The Dodgers are suckers. No way this ends well.
The Dodgers are suckers. No way this ends well.
They also offered 45 over 2 with an option out after one year a week ago. Looks like he lost the option out. That said, the Dodgers are suckers. McCourt could have said $20 million is on the table for the next two weeks. That's our final offer. Let us know. No one else was going to gamble higher on Manny. LA was the only option. SF wasn't ponying up $40M.So in other words exactly what they offered back in November. GB Scott Boras.![]()
3/4/09Predictions on the date he will "turn it off" and start behaving petulantly?
Manny Ramirez-OF-Dodgers Mar. 3 - 10:20 pm et According to the Los Angeles Daily News, Manny Ramirez is on his way to Los Angeles for a face-to-face meeting with Dodgers brass on Wednesday.Tony Jackson believes the Dodgers' two-year, $45 million deal is back on the table and Manny is OK with the salary. If deferred money or something else doesn't get in the way, then a deal moght be agreed to tomorrow.Related: Juan Pierre, Giants
Manny Ramirez-OF-Dodgers Mar. 3 - 10:11 pm et Agent Scott Boras has denied that any Manny Ramirez deal is in place with the Dodgers, and ESPN has retracted their initial report.Sort of. Enrique Rojas, who previously said it was agreed to, is now reporting that the two sides have "finally reached some common ground in their negotiations." That's ESPN speak for "we blew it, but we're going to do our best not to admit it." It's probably only a matter of time until something does get done here, and we'll trust SI.com's Jon Heyman, the unofficial mouthpiece of Boras Corp., to have the scoop.Source: ESPN.comRelated: Juan Pierre, Giants
Eithier that or they could move Or.Now if they can just move Either for a starter.
Pretty much agree with everything here. Dodgers were bidding against themselves. What made it worse was all the Manny-### kissing by McCourt during his pressers throughout this whole thing. Just pathetic having to beg a guy like Manny, who nobody else really wants anywhere near his price, to take $45 million. They also offered 45 over 2 with an option out after one year a week ago. 1. How long did it take McCort to figure out he was bidding against himself? Probably about three weeks after the rest of us figured it out.2. Why did McCort even continue to talk after Boras insulted him after the first offer with the "we'll wait for the serious offers now" crack?3. Can't McCort see he has a buyers market and Boras is trying to ratch up interest where there is none? After being burned by Boras on Andrew Jones, I can't say I'd have rushed right back in there with him.Pretty much agree with everything here. Dodgers were bidding against themselves. Because if Manny feels he was cheated, he's going to express his frustration on the field (and not in a good way).Explain this to me.The market is driven by supply and demand. ESPN just stated that NO other team was bidding on Manny. That being the case of no demand, the Dodgers should have lowered the off to two years at 30 million..still a great payday.Or two years 25 million..another great payday for a 37 year old player who can`t field his lunch. Why 45??
Manny fielded adequately for the Dodgers last season while hitting .396 with 17 HRs and 53 RBI in 53 games, which I believe is better than most players would have done. He also generated buzz that sold tickets and merchandise. I've seen it estimated that Manny made the Dodgers $10-$15 million last year in half a season. Manny is the best hitter in baseball and beloved by the large Latino base in Los Angeles. With the money he generates, the Dodgers are getting his talent at a bargain. McCourt gave Manny what he deserves without overpaying.Because if Manny feels he was cheated, he's going to express his frustration on the field (and not in a good way).Explain this to me.The market is driven by supply and demand. At least 50 mil.For sake of discussion, suppose Manny had stayed in Boston and put up a monster summer and post season, leading the Red Sox to another World Championship. How might he have done as a free agent, without the underling question of his integrity? How much $ did he cost himself?
Agreed. I don't think 4/$100M was out of the question in a best case scenario. At least 50 mil.For sake of discussion, suppose Manny had stayed in Boston and put up a monster summer and post season, leading the Red Sox to another World Championship. How might he have done as a free agent, without the underling question of his integrity? bullllllllllllllllllllllllllll####, as a cubs fan i hope this blows up....cobalt_27 said:Good luck Dodger Blue. I feel for ya'.
A little of both. Honestly I don't think anyone thought Manny would land anywhere but LA. There were no other suitors. Just a blip about SF but nothing else. Journalists need FA talk during the offseason. There was nothing going on with Manny. If there was it would have leaked. I just think with the circumstances McCourt was in the drivers seat, not Boras. Unless he believed Manny would retire rather than play for $40M. If Manny plays like he did last year he'll be worth the coin. That's a big IF. He was playing for a yearly title contender where he was considered a God and decided to dog it for a month or two at a time...year after year. Manny is a stud but he is old now. McCourt could have gotten away with $20M with a club option for another 20.I'm no McCourt fan, but people were saying he would not pay for Manny. Now they're saying he blew it by paying too much...So which is it?
No way in hell Henry and Theo would sing him to 4 years at his age. He would have been offered 2 year at $40 with an 3rd year option max. They know what he is capable of both with the bat and with his flaky brain.Agreed. I'm talking that scenario and then him hitting the open market. Henry and Theo would not have been the only ones bidding on his services if Manny was a good soldier throughout 2008.No way in hell Henry and Theo would sing him to 4 years at his age. Nothing exciting would have happened for Manny. The Red Sox had two individual team option years available to them at $20M per, and had he hit nearly .400 over the second half of the year they certainly would have exercised the first one.Manny's big demand was to get out of Boston and have those option years declined and eliminated from his contract. So in the Manny-plays-nice-and-hits-a-ton end game solution, he would have stayed in Boston and likely collected $40M over the next two seasons.Agreed. You may be right, certainly that is the logical conclusion. However, I'm not so sure that Boston wasn't a little worn out after years of his antics. No twist or turn in the Manny saga would surprise me.Manny seems to have made a more or less parallel move, with essentially the same term and dollars as he could have made in Boston. So is Boras the benefactor? I don't believe he was Manny's agent 8-9 years ago when the free agent deal was done. So Boras makes money off a new deal where he wouldn't off exercised option years?Nothing exciting would have happened for Manny. The time line for all this was as follows. Manny wanted his two options years exercised by the team in 2007 and they chose not to at the time. In 2008, he pleaded with them in spring training and early in the season and they again said they were not prepared to make a decision yet. So Manny had a hissy fit, pretended to be hurt, refused to play, and dogged it. On top of that, then he started bad mouthing the team, his deal, the management, etc. and demanded a trade . . . but only would accept it if the team declined his two option years. Had the Sox activated his option years and THEN traded him to LA, then he'd be pretty much in the same spot as he is now without all the drama, intrigue, and controversy.Had Boston caved and extended him two years for $40 million long ago, I suspect Manny would still be on the Sox (but probably not as motivated as he was on the Dodgers). You may be right, certainly that is the logical conclusion. Financially, Manny nets out with just about what he was going to get in Boston, but with damage to his image as a "good guy". The extra $5 million from the Dodgers goes to Boras, plus some "good will" donations he's making in L.A. that he probably wouldn't have had to make in Boston.Simmons had a long article in ESPN Mag last summer right after it happened, basically accusing Boras of orchestrating the whole thing so he could get paid. And someone else on ESPN Radio (don't recall who) made the same point last weekend. You may be right, certainly that is the logical conclusion.
