Manti Te'o's girlfriend who died... (2 Viewers)

He also claimed in an ESPN interview that he would call her every night for 4 weeks(?) while she was in the hospital and talk to her for 8 hours until they went to sleep - if I'm running a catfish scam on him thats a LOT of work to continue on a nightly basis. As people are saying above - for what High fives and yuks?
Yeah under the he was duped theory this would be one of the many white lies he told because he was embarrassed about either having an online girlfriend or being tricked. Clearly he wasn't talking to someone who doesn't exist for hours on a nightly basis.
:goodposting: A fishing plus embellishment on his part to show a deeper relationship with an online girlfriend. So what of the perpetrators? Are they possibly criminal scammers, or just stupid people with time on their hands?I guess the story is so interesting to me is because I can't believe people would think and do something like that, it would never cross my mind. Just proves my theory is the less people you talk to, the better off you are in general.
I've asked a version of this question here and at the oth:e:r board (I think), i.e., why do you fish? Only to be met with a  "Because it's fun." But for the life of me I can not imagine expending the effort that a scam like this would require to keep going for a year or more. Trolls are usually in it for the quick payoff. The worst case scenario for me in this whole thing would be for the alleged hoaxers to become celebrities and get their own television show.

I'm with ya. Who doesn't enjoy a prank or pulling off an I gotcha moment on someone? It's the effort and length that is odd with seemingly no bigger payoff that we know of.

DARNELL DOCKETT✔@ddockett @MTeo_5 bro we all make mistakes, #### it, Mann lets just go to KOD and ill find u what u looking for. You like midgets got a bad one 4 you.

@lennaykay releasing a statement on twitter within the hour. No idea if its the catfisher or just some smart nerd who took over the account.

If nothing else, this threat makes me smile at the thought of asspenny. But at the same time, I'm also kind of ashamed: For the life of me, I can't remember the threat that asspenny came from. Was it Camping with Steve? I don't think so.
I tapped out the beginnings of a parody for this, and I tried like hell to work asspenny into it. Couldn't make it work.
Will someone remind me where asspenny came from? I can't believe I've forgotten. Wasn't it an epic thread?

1. Search FFA for "asspenny" (returns 45 threads)2. Open each to see when it was started3.4. Profit!!

quote:@LennayKay My statement: This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but I have been told by Alabama's offense that Manti Te'o is not real.

Wait, is this the play everyone was talking about? Bowled over? I was expecting Earl Campbell or even Jacquizz Rodgers running through Earl Thomas last week. How can someone be "bowled" over when the RB isn't moving forward and it looks more like he missed his dive at the RB and Lavy was easily able step aside and push him further to the side.
Not the right play in the gif....that's TJ Yeldon. Don't know if there isn't gif of anLacy play, but here is one pic that made the Hawaii paper and upset Sr. Teo:http://www.mail.com/sports/football/1805856-teo-sees-career-with-bcs-title-game-loss.html

I think 'shed' is a better phrase than 'bowled over'.
Thanks. I was at a company off-site and was checking scores and very quickly realized there was no point in trying to find a place to watch the game. From some of the comments about the game, I thought Teo got literally run over, but that picture and the other one above look like missed tackles where he was the only guy close to the RB. Not good plays for him, but not bowled/run over.

Notre Dame calls Te'o a victim which is ironicThis paragraph backs up what I wrote earlier about Swarbeck "defending the Dome":
Notre Dame is notorious for covering up sexual assault allegations involving its football players, but the school declared star linebacker Manti Te'o a "victim" within mere hours after the news broke that his saintlike dead girlfriend never actually existed. Why is Notre Dame in such a rush to assert Te'o's victimhood while the investigation is still proceeding? Easy: because it strengthens the hero narrative the school relies on for profit and glory. Acknowledging the real victims of jock culture only hurts that narrative.

Interesting. I am really starting to believe that Manti was fished and embellished his story (like most people do) because of questions he most definitely got about a girlfriend he didn't want anyone to know he only knew online. I could be wrong, but that story above sounds like Ronaiah had a lot of time on his hands and was the source of the girlfriend and her not real family communications.

Possibly a stupid question. I know we don't know all the details of what really happened. But, in all of our various theories, are there any crimes committed?

I'm still not clear if the "Manti as a victim" storyline includes an admission that he made up most of the details in order to conceal the fact that he was "dating" an online chick who he had never really seen or talked to on the phone.Based on the story of him getting a call from his dead girlfriend in December, it sounds like there was definitely a female involved at some point. Seems like the PIs hired by Notre Dame would have more info on that side of things.

If we assume he is the victim, whle we all agree he made the situation worse with his embellishment, and that he is an incredible sucker for falling for this, i still feel very sorry for him.IF he was involved or knew to any degree i do not feel sorry for him, but if he was just a ####### it would suck to have the whole world know you were a ####### and have the innerwebs feasting on your dumbassnessIt'll fade over time, i just hope he has a strong support structure to get him through. I'm laughing as much as anyone at all the MEMEs, but i would hate to see him do anything to himself as a result of this, if he was just a ####### victim

From the Chuck Klosterman/Malcolm Gladwell piece on Grantland:

Does it matter that it's Notre Dame? Of course it does! If a football player from the University of Miami made up an Internet girlfriend, we would just assume that it was a part of their undergraduate major in Online-Dating Studies.

It's the lead on sportscenter. It was on all the national morning news shows. He's a projected top 10 pick on the biggest college football program ever. He created a fake human either to hide his sexuality, gain some weird publicity, or for reasons none of us know. He said this fake person had cancer, a real illness that everybody here has been effected by directly or indirectly. This is the strangest sports story I've ever heard and it's certainly a bigger news story than somebody cheating on a freaking bike race.

Speaking of that, Lance & Oprah can't be too happy with the timing of this.

It really isn't that the story is a big deal...it's that it's so freaking weird. Plus it hits a little bit of everything, especially the near universal hatred of all things Notre Dame.

I can't speak to whether or not Te'o was catfished or not, but I can relate my own story of being catfished...

It happened 11 years ago. I met a girl online. We chatted. Talked on the phone. She emailed me pictures. We planned to meet several times, but she cancelled each time for various reasons. We talked for months, every night, and while I definitely had my reservations, I wanted to believe she was telling me the truth. So ignored some things that nagged at me, telling myself that no one would be sick enough to go to such extremes to perpetrate a lie.

Well... long story short... it turned out she did go to such extremes. The name she gave me was false. The pics weren't of her. She told me she lived with her brother and his kids - it was actually her husband and their kids. It was hard to rationalize - the guy who was actually her husband knew she was talking to me, so I figured it had to be her brother. They were in a loveless marriage, just staying together for the kids. The kids would call her by her fake name when I would be on the phone with her - who would be that sick to have their kids call them by a fake name?

Again, I don't know what the full story is with Te'o, but I know that there are people messed up enough to create a scam like this for whatever reason, and there are people who are dumb enough to buy it, at least for a little while, especially those who are young. It was hard to face the truth, especially with my friends and family, so I can imagine the embarrassment Te'o is feeling if this was entirely a scam pulled against him.

I'm sure many of you will flame me, and deservedly so. I was young and stupid and gullible. I'm living proof that stuff like this does happen, as crazy as it sounds.

i will say this11 years ago skype and facetime were not around...

it would seem harder to keep something like this going now without someone getting on to a video chat with him

that being said, the heart makes people believe what they want a lot of the time

There you go. People are nucking futs. (not you) Listen, I'm going soft here, but when it comes to finding relationships and yes love, people are a lot more open to things. Nothing wrong with that. Can't control goofy people doing things the wrong way.

Appreciate you sharing this, and I'm sure this sort of thing still happens, and if it happened to Te'o I would think his embarrassment would be enough cause for him to keep it under wraps for a while. There is, however, once huge difference between 2002 and 2013- free and readily available video chats. That to me is one of the big questions still out there. I get how this happened often as recently as 2-3 years ago. But I'm not sure about someone keeping this up for more than a month or two in the era of FaceTime and Skype.

Why bring logic into this? Let's continue making fun of someone we don't know, with only the facts we've read on twitter.
think in training camp his teammates will tape his imaginary girlfriend to the goal posts?or will they make him carry their imaginary pads?

IT would mean he have to be a lot more gullible than our FFA friend (no offense)but it is certainly possible
